Avatar varies from having missing textures to having washed out and striped ones. It has been this way from the beginning. Changing the appearance of the avatar has no effect. Have installed the latest drivers from ATI.

The "Unkown" AMD model is a Phenom II X4 810.

The "artifacts" can be worked around by turning off VBO, Edit>Preferences>Graphics tab >Hardware Options> uncheck Enable VBO
LL is working with ATI to resolve this issue, see Zen Linden's comment from the main issue VWR-3258:

A couple of weeks ago, ATI sent us some of their internal capturing software and I was able to capture the triangle glitch bug on my 4850 and send it to them. They are on it, and believe it to be due to some optimizations they made and are working on it. I'll let you all know more when I know more and when they release a fix or give us a workaround.

Did the avatar problem happen prior to 1.23 for you?

Are you using multiple monitors?

Bradley Frostbite added a comment - 27/Jun/09 03:01 PM
I am new to Second Life. Version 1.23 is the only one I have tried. I am using multiple monitors, though I have been running SL in a window thus far. Changing it to fullscreen displays on a single monitor, and has no impact whatsoever on the avatar issue.

Black avatars on dual monitors is a known issue, see VWR-690, I believe this comment from that issue is the only workaround:

This is just a workaround, not a fix: use wayBackMachine to see the old article link above, this fix works for dual monitors:

( From http://web.archive.org/web/20070112165424/http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=333 )

1. Move SL window to primary monitor, and don't let its size be large enough to spill onto second monitor ("spanning").
2. Quit SL
3. Open SL.
4. Windows: Control-Alt-D, Mac: Command-Option-D (if not already showing "Advanced" menu)
5. Advanced > Character > Rebake Textures (Control-Alt-R/Command-Option-R)

Personally, I have to constantly run the Rebake Textures, as my avatar keeps losing its shirt (heh), usually when nearby avatars turn grey. Mahalo, Adam

Interesting. I didn't even rebake. Just keeping the SL window on the primary monitor seems to resolve the issue, or at least provide a useable workaround. Cool. Thanks.
