 Description  « Hide
I recently removed a Diamond HD4870 GPU due to unresolved graphics issues with numerous revisions of the SL viewer ( ref. #VWR-12139). Removed all traces of the ATI Catalyst software/drivers. Installed an ASUS ENGTX275 GeForce 275 GPU on June 18, 2009, and installed Nvidia 182.42 drivers.

SL viewer locks up before log in screen can load. Cannot even get to the splash screen 'welcome' graphic. Can only be closed via Task Manager. Problem occured with latest RC and latest release.

I uninstalled all NVIDIA 182.42 drivers, then re-installed them with all Virus software turned off. Same results. Tried installing latest 185.85 drivers - same results.

I completely removed and reinstalled the SL client. No difference.

I notice that if I click the 'close' red X at the upper right corner of the SL window, after several hours the screen will load, and the window asking if I'm sure I want to quit will appear - but all buttons and entry boxes are completely unresponsive. I can only close the window via Task manager.

I am effectively locked out of SL at present. BTW, the ASUS card works beautifully with my other software.

Ozymandias, please see Release Notes/Second Life Release/1.23 - Known Issues: Incorrect Minimum System Requirements Warning - NVIDIA Video Cards

Incorrect Minimum System Requirements Warning - NVIDIA Video Cards

  • VWR-13947[c]: Viewer gpu_list.txt does not include some recent NVIDIA graphics cards - On systems running NVIDIA GTS 250, GTX 270 and GTX 275 graphics cards, SL may indicate that the minimum system requirements have not been met. The viewer will still function, but graphics will default to Low or Medium settings. If your system uses any of these graphics cards, click the 'Don't show me this again' check-box, then choose 'No' to continue logging into Second Life.

If this is still an issue please Submit a Ticket with Support for a response tailored to your individual situation, see JIRA Home page

Ellla,

In desperation, I uninstalled SL again from F: drive, and re-installed it to my C: drive. To my surprise, I was able to get to the log-in screen. I did get the "minimum system requirements" message, selected "Don't show me this again", and I was able to log in normally. My graphics had indeed defaulted back to Low settings, and I was able to reset them with no problems. Good frame rates, beautiful graphics were achieved. I then logged out to attend to RL.

This evening I returned to my computer and attempted to log in again. Same results as yesterday; SL locked up solid before reaching the login screen, and could only be closed via the task manager. I will try uninstalling everything one more time, and will try the just released NVIDIA 1.86 drivers. If this doesn't work I'll submit a support ticket.

Update: Still doesn't work.

Ozymandias, I am sorry to hear that you are still having login issues.

Please try adding a command line parameter to the Viewer shortcut, see Viewer parameters

Please add --noprobe which should Disable hardware checking at startup.

For a further response tailored to your individual situation please Submit a Ticket with Support see JIRA Home page

Thank you : )

Ellla,

Adding --noprobe had no effect. I have a support ticket set up.

Why is this marked as Resolved?

The suggested fix did not work. This is not resolved.

July 1: I've been experimenting. I am still experiencing the lockup phenomenon when I attempt to open any version of the viewer. But if I run the Nvidia driver installer (I'm using version 186.18) and instruct it to overwrite the existing drivers (same version) without restarting my computer afterwards, I can sometimes get logged in and everything runs nicely. If I shut down or restart the computer, I'm back to the lockup condition. This happens with the latest viewer release 1.23.4, the latest RC, Snowglobe, and the Gemini viewer. None of the graphics settings in the viewer or in the Nvidia control panel seem to affect this behavior. I've tried this with antivirus software turned on and off with no difference observed.

Ozymandias, it could be that your driver is corrupted, maybe from an old driver; sometimes it is also advisable to run a Driver Cleaner programme, there are many available on the Web.

Nvidia says "When an NVIDIA display driver update is performed, the new driver will remove the previous drivers during the installation processor. Sometimes it is not successful in removing the older display drivers which can lead to display issues later on as a result of conflicting drivers. As a basic practice, it is recommended that you first uninstall the older display drivers before updating to a newer version."

Ozymandias, please see this article in Knowledge Base NVIDIA drivers appear to be causing problems with the Second Life viewer

We've noticed that users of NVIDIA graphics cards sometimes experience driver-related problems. After installing the latest NVIDIA drivers, they've found that the Second LifeĀ® viewer crashes with an error message that states: "Second Life is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly, are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware."

To the best of our knowledge, this appears to be a problem with the NVIDIA drivers' initial installation: the first time the install process is run, something fails silently – a file or set of files doesn't copy properly, but the installer doesn't give you any notice that something went wrong.

There is a solution: ensure that all of your applications are closed, and install the NVIDIA drivers again. For some reason, the drivers almost always install correctly the second time.

If these steps do not solve your problem, please see NVIDIA's Driver Installation Hints

Good Evening Ellla

No luck so far. I've tried deleting the Nvidia drivers through the Control Panel, deleting the drivers and the card via System manager, deleting drivers with Driver Sweeper, and going in manually and deleting any old ATI and Nvidia drivers I could find. I followed the instructions that Nvidia recommended, but I still get the same result: If I do a fresh re-install of the Nvidia drivers and open any of the SL clients without restarting my PC, I can run SL with no problems. In fact, I get great graphics with the GeForce 275 - I can max out the graphics settings and get good frame rates and good stability. I've even been able to experiment with shadows. Everything is fine until I restart my computer - then I'm back to the lockup condition.

Just curious as I'm investigating purchasing this video card: this issue hasn't been resolved yet, correct?

Ozymandias Zehetbauer added a comment - 18/Aug/09 05:44 PM
beam, I am still experiencing the problem. The behavior that I described in my June 21 and July 9 posts still occurs despite dozens of attempts to remove, clean, and re-install the Nvidia drivers. It is a major pain in the watusi to have to re-install my video drivers every time I start my PC. And SL is the only software that exhibits this problem.

The nightmare is over. Installed Windows 7 this evening. GeForce 275 compatibility problems solved, SL runs faster, all is right with the world.
