 Description  « Hide
The user-defined setting in the Preferences > Communication tab for "Make my online status visible only to my Friends" is rendered moot for those who happen to have Membership together in a Group. If the Group's Info tab shows members, their online status is seen regardless of Friends List "Show My Online Status settings. I would have expected the user-defined "Make my online status visible only to my Friends" preference and Friends List - Can see my online status checkbox settings to affect visibility in Group information tabs.

Tested by manipulating Friends List checkmarks, around June 19-25, 2007.

I'm testing a patch with this fixed.

My fix is to display today's date if you don't have the rights to see this person online. One thing that I'm concerned about here is performance and to be sure there are no side effects of removing this information. From what I can tell this is just an informational bucket but I'm testing an extra day to be sure of the results.

Note You cannot fix this without fixing SVC-85. The problem is that to rely on borked relationship information to show online or not you remove the work around of SVC-85. I will not be providing a patch until SVC-85 is fixed.

I understand reservations about fixing this; however, it is a visibility hole that negates "Make my online status visible only to my Friends". Currently there is greater capability through the friends list than there is through groups because of this hole. You should not be able to skirt anyone's wishes to be visible just because you are in the same group with that person. It is with this idea in mind that I'll provide a patch for this. Also eventually LL will close the visibility hole that can be found through scripting.

Since SVC-85 is making its way through the system, I figured I would submit this patch.

Should this be a client side or server side functionality? Will submit question to UI triage for further discussion.

Yes it would break scripts that rely on it so maybe they won't ever fix it. LL started on this track when they introduced visibility though flawed as it is. They also don't have to accept this patch if they don't want to. I'm providing this patch for an attempt at consistency and as an attempt to force the issue. Either provide control of visibility completely or rip it out. Don't give the illusion of control when in fact its nothing more than just an illusion.

At least we can agree there. False security is worse than none. See media url hiding bug and sculpt texture obscuring bug.

Checking "Can See My Online Status" worked fine for me till I installed client 1.18.3 (5) . Now it is broken - later that for other people, it seems - and I confirm that's not nice! I'd like to add that relogging has no influence on this problem (something about temporary fixing with relogging is here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2102).
