I've been getting the same thing. I have to dig into my recorded log on my hard drive to get the first line of the group chat sense the group chat window is FORCED closed.

Vorchairs Dagger added a comment - 07/Jun/09 05:46 AM
wonder how long it will take to fix this time.. 1 month? 2 perhaps? and within a few hours theyll start the survey, is your experience gettin better or worse. and we actually pay for this incredibly poor not caring service

LadyDi Andel added a comment - 07/Jun/09 07:49 AM
much of the group chat will go missing - bringing in an alt at the same time, watching the same group, you will see parts of the chat on one window, and parts on the other - neither will show the entire chat properly by itself. That is when it is working at all.

Tobyus Flanagan added a comment - 07/Jun/09 08:45 AM - edited
I am getting this on four groups now and even in conferences. Doesn't seem to matter what sim I am in.

Katryna Jie added a comment - 07/Jun/09 09:29 AM
it's not just chat, it's notices too.

Devi Demonia added a comment - 07/Jun/09 09:57 AM
Group IMs allow coordination of our sim as well as numerous others. Complete loss or intermittent failurethof this service affects more than the individual player and so this fault should be addressed in this context.

Booyah Bing added a comment - 07/Jun/09 12:28 PM
I have logged out due to frustration over this on more than one occasion. At its core, the very point of SL is communication. When that fails, why bother?

Pefeddy Paulse added a comment - 07/Jun/09 06:36 PM
This is an integral part of communication in world and it would be very nice if repaired.

Techwolf Lupindo added a comment - 08/Jun/09 11:53 AM
We need a patch that prevent the FORCED closing of the group chat window when an error happens. I've don't know how many messages was lost that I got because I was NOT given the opportunity to read the message before the window was FORCED closed.

Alexa Linden added a comment - 08/Jun/09 02:36 PM
Group chat failures are a complex problem. There are many possible
ways chat can fail. Here's how you can help fix the problem.

As a first step, please collect a list of all error messages you see
when using group chat. Copy the errors exactly as you see them, and
put them on a page located below:
https://wiki.secondlife.com/w/index.php?title=Group_Chat_Failure_Messages

  • Create the page if you're the first one with information.
  • Don't worry about adding lots of details. This should be a short
list without repeats or lots of extra notes.
  • Give everyone a few days to add their errors, since different resis
    often experience different problems.

Once we're sure we have a list, we can create a survey to collect more
information. We'll ask about the computers, internet connections, time
of day, and other factors common to these errors. If we're lucky, we
can help the dev teams better understand what's failing.

LadyDi Andel added a comment - 09/Jun/09 12:01 AM
Sorry Alexa, but you're making this much to complicated, we get all those errors listed, plus dead space (try to send something, no errors show up, but nothing goes through either) – out of frustration, we just started a new group (yes, a pain, especially as big a group as we are), but so far, the new group has been working fine.

Miro Collas added a comment - 09/Jun/09 07:17 PM - edited
This has been maddening today.. half to 2/3 of the time, a message sent into group chat gives an error.

Added: this affects 1.22 as well, not just the RC. So I doubt it is client related.

No change in the last few hours. Almost every message to group chat has to be sent multiple times before it is sent; attempts usually give errors.

Miro Collas added a comment - 10/Jun/09 12:34 PM
And today, same problems.... error after error after error...

Plus messages sent by others are often not coming across; I become aware of them by seeing responses to them.

AnneMarie Alcott added a comment - 10/Jun/09 12:37 PM
I even get failures before I've even tried to open up my groups. Like as soon as I log in if there's a chat going on in a group that I'm in, it'll instantly tell me that I have failed to connect with the group, because the session no longer exists. Clearing my group cache helps, but it doesn't stop the failure messages and half the time I only see parts of the convo.

Zoren Manray added a comment - 13/Jun/09 07:03 AM
This looks like a duplicate of the older SVC-1509 issue.

TriloByte Zanzibar added a comment - 13/Jun/09 11:04 AM
While chat failures seem constant in 1.23 RC3 and 1.23 RC4, I am also experiencing them with 1.22.11

TriloByte Zanzibar added a comment - 13/Jun/09 11:06 AM
This is different from that issue, Zoren. While that issue does seem to be back, this is a new error. I'm seeing errors when a group chat opens/starts when a message is entered by another user, not just when I try to initiate a group chat.

Cummere Mayo added a comment - 15/Jun/09 08:13 AM - edited
With THIS particular bug, i have found most often when i get it, there is at least one, and sometimes multiple names of avatars being displayed in the group chat participants window that are not online. I don't know if this is particular to me, or not, but it seems to me that maybe (at least in my case) SL might be trying to extend the group session to one or more offline members causing the critical failure, and that because the member is actually offline, it can't properly read who the recirpicant(s) is(/are) that cause(es) the failure.

possibly related, in the past (prior to about a month ago, if i closed group chat and reopened it I would have a fairly identical list of who was participating in chat, between the "old" and "new" sessions. For the last month, if I do that, I get wildly different lists.

Bofp Boyd added a comment - 15/Jun/09 10:39 AM
I can confirm this .. i see one of my alt online when i'm really sure it's not , and there's a difference between the list of chat participants and the online people showed in the groups infos

I saw too people not showed in the chat's participants list when they're online and ready to receive group message.

Communication platform!?!?!?! I haven't heard from New Citizens Inc in weeks, similar to others, when I log on I immediately get a list of messages telling me that i cannot connect to this or that group. I've reverted to 1.22 (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions) and it seems less virulent but is still happening. PS Whats with the flickerin alpha's in .23 - naaaaasty...

Alex Parsons added a comment - 22/Jun/09 07:05 AM
I have been recieving the same error in ALL Groups for+/- a month now. I am a Live Musician and rely on these groups to advertise my shows. Right now, after a few tries send the message, if I do not get the error message, I am really wondering if my IM's are getting through at all. Live Music Enthusiasts, Second Life Music, Musician's Circle, Music Afficianatos, ect....just to name a few. I even get the error when doing a Friends Conference.

Wolfpup Lowenhar added a comment - 22/Jun/09 09:07 AM
here is a posible work around but it will mean you have mutiple chat windows open whic if your aon a small screen is not realy a good thing first open the comnuication window and then start each of the group chats then 'peel' it off the comunications console. i have noticed that if i try to send a message to one group while there is a group that has 'active',tab blinking yellow, chat that the group im trying to send to will automaticaly fail. but if i have the groups with 'active' chat going peeled off the comunications console the the group chats seem to work just fine.

Alex Parsons added a comment - 22/Jun/09 09:43 AM
...it is also happening when recieving Group IM's. Even when no other chat windows are open, you get the ping sound then the error message that forces the chat window closed before you can even read the IM. This is a serious problem. It is hendering my ability to advertise my shows.

Voodoo Pevensey added a comment - 22/Jun/09 10:56 PM
I am having this problem as well. When I try to open The Galaxy Staff Group I immediatley get this error popping up: "Unable to start a new chat session with The Galaxy Staff Group. Error making request, Please try again later.", and it then forces that chat box closed. In fact I have not seen nor been able to get into that group chat for going on 3 days now. It doesn't even work here and there, it is just 100% dead in the water. And I am well aware that I am far from the only person in that group having that problem.

Same error happens when trying to start a group chat with Viking Estates and Realty and THE GALAXY.

Other groups I get an error, whenever someone else tries to send a message into the group, about being unable to start new chat session and it then forces that chat box closed.

I thought perhaps that updating to the latest release may help, since I wanted to see if that would also help with my avatar constantly twitching and vibrating like has been going on for the last month, but it did not help either issue.

Graham Sharpless added a comment - 24/Jun/09 05:58 PM
Another day another day of frustration with group chat errors 4 weeks and no sign of it being fixed.....

Feliciano Cazenove added a comment - 24/Jun/09 10:52 PM
one of our groups on our sim is not working at all , no messaging is possible for the last couple of weeks, making it impossible for us to communicate. The message we get is the "[recipient]" type not even identifying the group name and window. We areused to the usual mild malfucntion and occasional lag in group messaging but This is now paralyses our roleplay abilities.
Linden assign soemone and get it resolved..pretty please!

Didier Soyuz added a comment - 30/Jun/09 06:10 PM
Dear LL: Please look into this IM problem and let everyone know you are dealing with it..I totally agree with the other members of this discussion: communication is everything and if LL cannot resolve IM communication technicalities like these, it really does not reflect well on the company image as a lead in virtual platforms. I have spoken to people who are leaving LL because of this. It becomes so irritating, they can't stand using the system any more. We do talk to each other, and group discussions are crucial for community development. A swift response from your team would be fantastic.

Basho Singh added a comment - 30/Jun/09 06:41 PM
this communication issue needs to be fixed...working with a language education group can be difficult if notices and communications can't be sent to each individual

Asus Flow added a comment - 08/Jul/09 09:47 AM
A chatroom, which SL is after all, without a proper working groupchat is like a beautiful body with a non working heart.
I'd rather have a less beautiful body......

The groupchat problem is getting worse, affects more of the groups I'm in every day. Getting very tired of this and am sure to leave SL if it won't be fixed soon.

Caemlyn Witherspoon added a comment - 08/Jul/09 11:21 AM
This has been a probelm since 2007.
I LOVE SL and appreciate all the time and effort a LOT of people put into making this wonderful place for us to come to.
Normally the quality of service I have received on even the most mundane issues is unexcelled.
In almost 4 years I think I have asked for help MAYBE 3 times. I am asking now. Fixing groups would make it so so much better.
I have submitted ticket after ticket on this issue, called LL, had everyone I could add to the vote, submit their own tickets, etc but this is not a priority item with LL it seems. The best I got was "We were unaware there was a problem with groups".
This is a problem with EVERY group on every sim with every OS on every viewer. It affects all users.
Yesterday most group stopped working altogether and as of this posting I have no way to let my staff, my VIPS know anything. Very time consuming and frustrating.
Please urge all your friends to come here and add their feelings.
TY LL but PLEASE FIX GROUPS!!!

Shannon Denneny added a comment - 08/Jul/09 11:32 AM
Group communication is a critical component of SL for many users and one that most have come to rely on in one form or another. Please consider bumping this up to a high priority item that needs fixed as soon as possible.

Sincerest thanks for your time and attention to this matter.

Morgaine Dinova added a comment - 08/Jul/09 04:26 PM - edited
The "problem since 2007" mentioned by Caemlyn, which has always been a partial and intermittent and self-recovering problem, is now accompanied by a new one that is of a different magnitude altogether, and is non-recoverable.

SVC-4509 describes the total absence of any names whatsoever in the "list of active IM participants in this IM session" in each group IM window. Group IM is completely dead under these conditions. We'll be coming up to 24h of this total service loss shortly.

Note that after SVC-4509 is fixed, the normal intermittent group IM problems are likely to continue, so the two Jiras should not be linked under a single resolution.

Yichard Muni added a comment - 09/Jul/09 11:09 AM
I see the "usual" slowness and symptoms : error "your message could not... etc

but since some days appear new symptoms:
-messages very slow, up to 5 minutes
-when a group IM automatically opens, it is closed automatically "session does not exist" and the message is lost, save in the main window

The problem plagues any group, but more larger groups (more than some tens of members)
It seems to happen by episodes of 10-30 minutes

In more the error message usually block all other typing activity, which is very annoying

This is a serious issue, and clearly showstopper, as I saw many discussions stopping because the IM was dead. To coordinate activities too becomes impossible without communication means.

I imagine that business people just laugh loud when they see that LL wants them to use such a system for their conferences... and us non-business people don't laugh, as it is all our social life which is jeopardized

Aprille Shepherd added a comment - 16/Oct/09 03:53 PM
For those of you who use voice, Vivox ( SL's external Voice Provider) hosts a similar Group Chat system that can be used with or without actually talking (but you must be in voice). This app is hosted outside of SL and is basically Voice over IP - but it also has a group chat feature (the text portion) and it works perfectly for hours on end. Once in a while we have a few issues getting it fired up, but just restarting will fix that. You can even add/invite new people to the chat by dragging their calling card into the chat. This is not the same as General Group Chat - participants must be invited but it is pretty easy to deal with...and of course, only those who you invite can be in on the conversation/chat. Yes, BOTH voice and text chat run together in the same window. There is a Torley Video on this too I think.

I would also like to mention another MAJOR flaw that many have been missing because they don't even know it is happeing. When you log in to SL, all the Group Chats reset, and any Group Chat that takes place will pop open that window and you will see that particular thread/chat. Many found this quite annoying and complained...so Linden changed it...quietly...and so now...if you close the group chat window...it will NEVER open again until you RELOG. Even if you are the Moderator of the group, or even the Owner, this is the case! So you could be missing very important dialogue and not even know it. In order to avoid this, you must not close that window. Make the mistake of Xing it and now...you have to re-log to make it work. Here what should happen is a offering a preference based on the group (just like show this group in my profile) that offers this feature/bug as an option (close perm. vs. close and open when chat resumes). I'll have a look and see if there is a issue created for this, but i dont think there is.

Aprille, re "it will NEVER open again until you RELOG"

On SVC-1509 the last few comments suggest a workaround, without relogging

Bugs Larnia added a comment - 01/Sep/09 10:37 PM
DB, Lynne,

Yes, the feature enables you to temporarily close group chats. This does not work for person to person IMs, which will keep popping up. At times this is indeed handy, especially with more active groups.

However, DB, you do not need to relog to reopen a group that you had closed earlier. Simply going to the Friends/Groups screen (Ctrl+Shift+F) and manually reopening the group chat will reactivate it.

DBDigital Epsilon added a comment - 02/Sep/09 07:20 AM
Bugs, my apologies, I should have been more clear in my statements in that it only applied to group chats and that the relogging was only if you wanted that particular group chat to reopen automatically when a message was posted after you have closed it for that particular session.

Yichard Muni added a comment - 17/Oct/09 12:09 AM
The situation seems to be less awful, with less abrupt chat failures. However we note a general slowness of chat, whatever it is in IM, group chat, and even in public chat (this is new). So the system remains globally unreliable, probably from overload.
Another possible cause may be bad response of the Internet networrk, but in this case Linden Labs has no responsibility an can do nothing.
