 Description  « Hide
The font in the UI of RC1.23.1 are not as readable for me as in 1.22. Changing the UI magnification to increase the fonts to readable size results in the windows becoming too large. see sample note card fonts in screen shots included. Debug font settings don't seem to have an effect.

Added by Celierra Darling:
Please see VWR-14163 if you have the fuzzy/blurry text problem (like 1.23.jpg), and VWR-14165 if you have the clipped-text problem (like SecondLifeReleaseCandidate 2009-05-14 11-00-34-04.png. If you have further information or comments, please use those issues instead, which will help keep things sorted. Thanks!

three new screenshots, showing the broken font.
I tried it in fullscreenmode and windowed mode.

It also happens with the default skin

PS/UPDATE: Changing the UI Size does not help, it just draws bigger "boxes" with bigger font size, but still the same distortion

Joe, please check you have the latest graphics drivers by either going to your manufacturer's site or by checking in Knowledge Base How do I get the latest drivers for my graphics card? ATI have recently released Catalyst 9.4 OpenGL 2.1.8577

If you still have an issue, please add your comments and vote on the main issue VWR-13076. On that issue, using the updated Graphics drivers please attach a screenshot using the Default skin.

Thank you : )

I've experienced font legibility issues in 1.23 as well on the Mac viewer. Specifically, the friends/groups list text is slightly blurred, as if the viewer is trying to render a certain sized typeface using anti-aliasing. The result is that the font appears smudged and harder to read.

attica bekkers added a comment - 18/May/09 02:53 AM - edited
I have gone back to main client because I could not handle the extra blurr. (PC)

This is a much bigger issue than it may seem as so many people have some vision problems however small, perhaps requiring reading glasses ( with middle age in my case), and will find legibilty more diffcult leading to vague disatisfaction- but only the absolutely dedicated will want to get new drivers or figure out font options.

The smudge becomes worse on larger fonts, and is a very bad blurr on bolded, friends online especially.

(Cant give details i went back to main client - but will get rc again if you want)

Can anyone experiencing this issue please provide full environment details, including graphics driver version

Sharron Schuman added a comment - 21/May/09 03:08 PM
full details are as above when i created the issue. Nvidia driver version: 182.50,and 185.85. i had to roll back to 182.50 because of constant crashing when taking high rez photos to disk. small squat fonts are with either driver.

I too am experiencing the same issue with the choppyness of fonts. I have tried all points on the UI scale and every one has the same chewed up fonts. I have ensured all my drivers (system and graphics card) to no avail i have not been able to resolve this issue. I have no problems with the normal viewer only all of the most recent release candidates.

Please focus on using this as a meta issue and putting any comments on the linked issues for specific problems - ie parts of characters missing, or blurry text

Im having this issue (fuzzy/poor text) as well but only when Anti-Aliasing is enabled in 1.23.4
This is only in the windows version. Linux version is fine

Im attaching 2 screenshots. Without anti-aliasing, with anti-aliasing.

Celierra Darling added a comment - 17/Jun/09 07:36 PM
There are several different issues here: one is blurry/squashed letters like 1.23.jpg, and another is more like the bottoms of letters are randomly cut off (see VWR-13667). VWR-3947 seems to be yet another different issue as if the middle third of a some lines of text have gone missing.

Please try to keep these separate so we might be able to sort out who's having which problem and what's in common among those seeing each different symptom (in particular, peoples' drivers and graphics cards).

Celierra Darling added a comment - 17/Jun/09 07:43 PM
dena dana: It's possible that you need this hotfix for AMD 2xxx and 3xxx cards to get rid of that error message: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/CatalystAGPHotfix.aspx

Celierra Darling added a comment - 17/Jun/09 08:38 PM
Created VWR-14163 for the fuzzy/blurry text problem, and VWR-14165 for the clipped-text problem. Please put further information in those issues instead, to help keep things sorted.

Sharron Schuman added a comment - 18/Jun/09 12:10 AM
I have more data on this as to the issue I posted about the text being out of proportion. I don't have the fuzzy/blurry problem. In the photos I posted I am running sl in a window. If I run sl in full screen mode text displays properly. This did not appear until 1.23.n. 1.22.n displayed text in proper proportion running sl in a window.

dena dana added a comment - 18/Jun/09 06:37 AM
Hotfix for 9.6 driver fixed the OUT OF PROPORTION text problem but gave a rendering issue that for me made sl unusable.
Searched and found 8.8 drivers here http://www2.ati.com/misc/hotfi...hotfix_xp32_67246.exe
seemed to fix the issue of text and more stable on sl for me.

Weird, I experience this issue with The Sims 3 when I have it in windowed mode (full screen is absolutely fine). However, I don't experience it with 1.23 of SL. Weird!

Anyone notice a similarity in screen resolution and windowed mode for the people saying they have this issue? Unfortunately all the details people have given omits this. And I just noticed the hot-fix people have been posting - anyone find this fixes it?

By the way, I am using Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, not ATI, so those hot-fixes don't apply to me (I was curious to see if it'd clear up my Sims 3 issue, thinking they were general Windows hot-fixes, not graphics drivers).

agnes periapse added a comment - 27/Jun/09 08:28 AM
For me, the oddest part about my new blurry-fonts problem, is the fact that it's only my Friends List that is blurry now, and it's only the bold-faced ones who are online that appear less legible.

I'm on a (very old) Mac, and I will try to grab a snapshot and enviro infos next time I get on.

I have this problem on Linux (with the downloaded client, not built by me), but I've never seen this on Windows (in downloaded or custom clients).
