Alpha sorting issues are much worse in this release candidate 1.23 as compared to latest 1.22 release. This was documented looking at and working with plant alpha textures on my land. I alternated between the 2 viewers looking at the same garden. 1.23's ability to alpha sort was disappointing.

Can you include snapshots?

Personally I have found it better, issues like VWR-12982 have been fixed.

Shot of garden with 1.23 viewer. Notice small blooming trees showing through large green leaf tree. I get the same effect in other places also with diiferent trees or plants.

Feel free to visit Ravenfirth and see if you get the same results alternating viewers.

Second the Discription of what happened:

i had set SL to clear all caches group and texture as i was having a problem with groups not showing in any of the about land / object edit windows. but befor i loged out i wen in my residence and set all windows to have the 'glass' blacked out(alpha 0% texture made in PhotoShopCS3). then proceeded to log out and compleately reboot my system and SL. and upon loging back in had a compleately grey screen in the viewer(as i expected with the 1.23PN / RC after a cache clearing) and once every thing reloaded including me. i saw the bananna plant and the dock through the 'blackened' windows. as the picture shows.

Using Second Life 1.23.2 (120258) May 13 2009 19:37:00 (Second Life Public Nightly) I do not get the same results, possibly fixed?

Alpha sorting is also a big issue with hair and is long overdue for some TLC from LL!
There must be a bit more that you can do about it because other online games that have alphas, particularly noticeable in plants don't have these issues as badly as SL does.

I am still noticing alpha sorting that is quite a bit worse than in 1.22...Some Alpha texture plants appear in front of plants that they are actually way behind. If I go into edit mode on those offending plants they snap out of it and it fixed. Well at least untill the next time I log in...heehee...then out of sorts again..For some reason the tree I used in my example photo above is not doing it anymore but I am getting other ones and new spots. If I cam around my garden center I might get two or three strange alpha shorts with viewer 1.22 and 20 or 30 with viewer 1.23. It will be disapointing to me if the alpha sorting ends up worse when the 1.23 becomes the standard viewer. I work with alpha plants alot and have hopeds for an improvement not a degradation of alpha sorting. I do have more photos but they just show the same thing but in other locations. Thanks, Veggie

Using the newly released 1.23 standard viewer I am still getting alot more alpha sorting issues than 1.22. I have compared the alpha sorting on three different computers and same result. I am sticking with 1.22 for now because I am a landscaper/gardener and the alpha sorting with 1.23 has been disappointing.

Since recent update, I have found major issues with transparency. My avatar is often invisible or partially invisible. Any trees or landscaping comes directly through the house as if there are no walls. This issue has worsened greatly since the new update. I recently downloaded the 1.23.4 version and noticed these problems shortly after. Problem exits with windows users too.

I am seeing and feeling so much frustration within the SL world that is really not fun anymore. The problems with our Avitars and our alpha textures causing so much problems its not worth the trouble, especially for us new people. We spend so much money and time to create the environment that we think will make us happy only to find out nothing really works right. I bought land and the whole tier system is depressing enough for what you get and the price you have to pay. Now these problems really make it frustrating for me. I like the idea of SL, but they should never think they are irreplaceable. It just takes one frustrated customer to start a whole new and improved plan for an SL type environment. Customer satisfaction should always remain number one. Giterdone!

I can reproduce this issue on Snowglobe 1.1.2 (2584) by logging into my home location, http://slurl.com/secondlife/Irene/226/40/51 . Try focusing on the bush that's on the deck, and let it pass in front of all the surrounding trees in the backyard. Alternately, check the trees all along the north side of the house - but don't move your camera too much. If I move my camera a very large distance away from the object that has bad sorting (enough to change the tree's LOD?), the sorting fixes itself.

I also get the same problem with my ZHAO, which also has alpha masking.

I haven't tried doing this with 1.23...
