 Description  « Hide
Note: This appears to be an ATI issue, there is a similar issue for Nvidia cards at VWR-12906

Since upgrading to latest RC my Avatar goes semi transparent whenI change items of clothing.
A rebake sorts the problem out, briefly but as soon as the textures arrive again it goes transparent.

1) Wear or remove an item of clothing (e.g. jacket)
2) it will rez normally
3) when the "refresh" baked texture arrives it will be 50%-ish alpha

or

1) rebake
2) immediately issues is resolved
3) short time later back to transparent

This problem is a duplicate of VWR-13063

beq janus added a comment - 16/Jun/09 04:04 PM
I'm reopening this as LL have released 1.23.4 with this still broken. The bugs that this was related to by the previous entries are mostly not the same issue and the one that appears to have been truly duplicated has itself been closed off and referenced back to a different issue

This is NOT VWR-12906.

Video repro: http://tr.im/oLmf
Windows XP SP3, ATi Radeon HD 2900XT Graphics card (320 cores), Catalyst Driver 9.5/9.6, Second Life Client 1.23.4

Issue does NOT exist with the last official release - 1.22.11

Guys, VWR-12906 is primarily a nVidia-related problem: Most ATi users don't experience missing avatar parts like that.

in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5948 its sayed that
Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Hardware Options->Antialiasing
It's a drop-down box, select 16x to restore avatar opacity.

does that help here?

Djibu Fabre added a comment - 17/Jun/09 02:59 AM
It works for me, nice workaround.

Just enable antialiasing in ATI CC, and it will work. Open CCC, anti-aliasing and check use application settings.

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 17/Jun/09 02:45 PM
changed title and added note to the description slightly to clarify which cards it effects and it's opposite number for Nvidia cards

I had same problem, but with this mod all work fine ))

>Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Hardware Options->Antialiasing
>It's a drop-down box, select 16x to restore avatar opacity.
and
> Just enable antialiasing in ATI CC, and it will work. Open CCC (Catalyst Control Center), anti-aliasing and check use application settings.

Or

Just enable antialiasing in ATI CC, and it will work. Open CCC (Catalyst Control Center), anti-aliasing and :
Level: 8x
Filter: Edge Detect

I would like to correct my last comment:

>Edit->Preferences->Graphics->Hardware Options->Antialiasing
>It's a drop-down box, select 16x to restore avatar opacity.
and
> Just enable antialiasing in ATI CC, and it will work. Open CCC (Catalyst Control Center), anti-aliasing and check use application settings.

does solve the Problem. You better change the setting. log out of SL and Log back into it not messing with your graifc settings. Witch reopens the bug.
So change it and dont mess with the settings anymore.

So maybe the AA should be looked into by LindenLabs for ATI users.

beq janus added a comment - 18/Jun/09 09:57 AM
As I raised the bug I guess I should also confirm that the workaround described has worked for me. thank you for the advice.

What I did:
1) don't change SL graphics settings
2) run the catalyst control centre
3) go into 3d->anti-aliasing.
4) select "use application settings"

This is however still a bug, with the solution simply a workaround. LL should still review and determien why cusotm AA settings will not work

Hover Text fonts are very hard to read. Rebake only corrects the issue momentarily. I have gone through every setting on the ATI Catalyst software and nothing corrects the issue.

Net Antwerp added a comment - 20/Jun/09 11:03 AM - edited
Caelib, workaround for the hover text problem - enable Catalyst AI in CCC. "Standard" will do.

Note that the "Advanced" Catalyst AI setting can crash the viewer.

Strife Onizuka added a comment - 22/Jun/09 05:52 AM
This is caused by internal changes they are making to support an alpha mask for avatars (VWR-812).
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-812?focusedCommentId=97804&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels%3Acomment-tabpanel#action_97804

This bug is best described as growing pains.

Net Antwerp added a comment - 22/Jun/09 06:53 AM
Strife,

Internal development changes MUST stay internal - nVidia and ATi users shouldn't be experiencing these problems right now.

Missing avatar parts (nVidia), Transparent Avatar issues (ATi).. Ridiculous for a 'Production' or final-release 3D software.

Not to mention another problem with ATi Radeon (HD) users: Anti-Aliasing is forced ON, regardless of the Catalyst Control Center settings. Yes, tried re-installing the driver + re-installing 1.23. 1.22 obeys AntiAliasing settings, 1.23 does not - performance loss for ATi users who doesn't want AA turned on.

Plus, 1.23 seems to be overloading the display driver, causing it to "stop responding" with the VPU Recover dialog popping up all the time. 1.22 and earlier NEVER caused the display driver to "stop responding".

Internal development changes MUST stay internal - nVidia and ATi users shouldn't be experiencing these problems right now. Or, at least, a "switch" to turn the latest unstable 'enhancements' off.

Possibly linked to VWR-12906, but no proof of this...

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 26/Jun/09 08:29 PM
From VWR-14385:

I found how this can be fixed when I have had someone run into me asking Help for the Ghost effects happening ... it seems to cure the problem when... I ask them to go into Advanced>Rendering>tests>volume
I ask them to do this.. Please uncheck the volume Once.. click out.. Re bake.. and vala they appear sometimes it's taken up to two times to do.. but still it works.. this is the method I've found about one week ago and tested it on a few others.. for clarifications..
Hope this helps.. out in some degree..
thank you
Jade.. Atlantis.. Mentor Servent..

Just started happening to me today upgrading from Windows 7 RC to RTM

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2400 MHz)
Memory: 6143 MB
OS Version: Professional (Build 7600)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2
Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.14.0010.0671
OpenGL Version: 2.1.8673

ATI drivers 9.6, 9.7, 9.8 all make my avatar transparent about 2mins after logging in.
This has happened before around late 2008 and was fixed by ATI fixing their drivers for this problem. Link to problem back then: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5948
As above and back in the old one, the trick to get it back was to increase the AA setting, but this has never worked for me with this problem.

Nimil Blackflag added a comment - 06/Sep/09 11:32 AM
why does second life never work with the lated videocard drivers? my replacement for my old videocard is an ati.. everything was fine until i updated my drivers this morning and now i have this transparency problem. didn't take the time to look here before rolling back my driver though. these troubles really need to be looked at.

Jarnz Dench added a comment - 12/Sep/09 06:09 PM
The new ATi Drivers 9.9 don't fix the problem.
Did find for me that View > Highlight Transparent makes avatars solid again for 1.23.4 and Snowglobe 1.1.2, but can't go around seeing red highlights everywhere, does come in handy with customer support though.

Jarnz Dench added a comment - 24/Oct/09 12:13 AM - edited
Another driver (9.10) and new SL client (1.23.5) and still no progress.
I this problem being worked on by LL or ATI? Would be nice to know because it's really starting to affect building and animating not being able to see avatars. Highlight Transparent works in some cases but when there is a lot of transparent around it's too hard to work.
