 Description  « Hide
Frame rate for many sites is around 5 fps. However if I start the regular viewer, with same settings, and same site, frame rate goes to around 15 fps. Its consistent from site to site.

Graphics in both are set to non-custom and lowest setting.

If I turn off Antialiasing, I get a healthy 30fps. If i turn on 2X antialiasing, I get 6 fps. Under 1.22 I run 4x antialiasing and get a healthy 25 fps. I should add it's intermittent and unpredictable. sometimes it will work for awhile. When it goes bad I can either toggle Antialiasing off, or Toggle the state of Avatar Cloth to restore the framerate.

I don't know why, but

Linked VWR-13324 as it's also about Very low framerates with 1.23 RC

hotrodjohnny gears added a comment - 09/May/09 12:32 PM
I checked and Antialiasing is disabled on my viewer. I get 1 frame every 2-3 seconds.

Monica Balut added a comment - 18/May/09 12:06 PM
I have antialiasing disabled and anisotropic filtering off and my framerate is 7.7. Very choppy view when moving the cam,

Taibah Takahe added a comment - 21/May/09 09:35 AM
I have also noticed a huge drop in performance with all the 1.23 release candidates, but this one is worse than the last ones. I am running at less than 10FPS all the time, while on the 1.22 there is times I am up there about 37/38 (in a closed environment) while with the this 1.23 it's like 10fps or less, which is not acceptable at all. I will provide a screenshot when I am on my other computer.

Monica Balut added a comment - 22/May/09 05:04 AM
I just upgraded to RC2. Same problem. FR is in the 30's & 40's with the 1.22 viewer. As soon as i start the RC viewer, FR drops to 7-8. It's essentially unusable at that rate.

Gina Glimmer added a comment - 25/May/09 10:25 AM
I second Taibah's comment for RC 1.23.1 and RC 1.23.2.

System :
2.4ghz dual core CPU
12gb ram
1024mb(total) bridged PCIe ATI graphics cards
Windows Vista 64

Frame rates on the RC are consistently 50% lower than standard viewer regardless of location on grid. Also, even when frame rates are reported to be above 20 on the RC, extreme 'jumps' occur where movement becomes impossible. These jumps are similar to the viewer freezing for up to two seconds, then catching up with itself though all performance monitors show the program to be functioning properly.

Satomi Ahn added a comment - 10/Jun/09 08:14 AM
Maybe it is related to VWR-13182: antialiasing is always on, no matter the setting you choose. If your hardware is low-end this would cause this framedrop.

Lyssa Varun added a comment - 13/Jun/09 05:55 AM
Still an issue with 1.23.4.123523... the anti-aliasing is a possibility but figuring out why it only affects certain chip sets across differing manufacturers is an issue.

I am seeing about 1/2 the frame rate consistently with 1.23 level viewers. It was isolated to Release Candidate until I downloaded the latest released version (which is a 1.23 level).
Would it be possible to back off the release level to a 1.22 version so we can get around this problem until it's resolved?

System:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1994 MHz)
Memory: 3070 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5250
Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.362-070405a-046205C-Lenovo
OpenGL Version: 2.0.6471 Release

After looking at some of the other issues on this topic, I tried turning off "basic shaders" and my frame rate went back up to about what it was in the 1.22 versions. I don't know what effect this would have had before, since I had not tried running with it turned off, and don't have a 1.22 level any more.

I'm having close to the same issue, slow rezzing. But in the situation I know what the cause is. When I log in, my ping times are in the 1000s of ms. Sometimes I experience packet loss as well. My viewer will run slightly better for a few seconds, then my ping times will jump again. This is what's causing my slow loading. If I reboot my system then it's fine for about 2 or 3 days. My system exceeds the requirements for SL on Vista and I've checked my my net connection. My ping times outside of SL are quite low by comparison to SL on 1.2. 30-50 ms outside SL. In world they are 80-300, in world. I did not have this problem in 1.2.

1fps then crash every time when there is few sculpted things or just few people around me, no matter is the quality set on medium or low or is AA on or off

When you see this issue, please would you activate the Fast Timers Console, take a screenshot and attach it to this issue.

This section on the Wiki page Debug Help - How do I get my Fast Timers results? will give you detailed information.

Thank you : )

Looks the same issue. I try to test this Fast Timer tip from Ella

Are Sperber added a comment - 02/Aug/09 02:17 PM
Same settings - looks better

Are Sperber added a comment - 02/Aug/09 02:19 PM
same settings - after opening the map very bad fps

Are Sperber added a comment - 02/Aug/09 02:23 PM
same settings - first ca 40 fps, after opening taskbarmenue "Desktop" fps breakdown.
I have an old GK-Driver original Asus. I come back after reinstalling the old driver.

Are Sperber added a comment - 02/Aug/09 02:49 PM
The same result with the old driver. First 40 fps, opening desktop menue 15 fps. But after I'm clicking on viewer help menue its over 50 fps, breaks down to 15 fps after using the taskbar menue.???

Wiz Elswit added a comment - 02/Aug/09 03:09 PM - edited
I also have captured some Fast Timers results, and will attach them.

The 1.22 level before the problem is
Second Life 1.22.11 (113941) Mar 6 2009 12:50:02 (Second Life Release)

I am seeing performance problem with both Release candidate, and the latest Second Life Release levels.
The screen captures showing the problem are from
Second Life 1.23.4 (123523) Jun 9 2009 08:32:14 (Second Life Release Candidate)

These were all captured using the Default High setting, right after I logged in with that viewer level

I just noticed that the Bandwidth numbers are shown as much higher in the 1.23 screen captures.. The difference in frame rates stays the same even after the bandwidth settles down to normal levels.

There was discussion of the effect of turning basic shaders off earlier in this issue. I thought that it helped with the frame rate, but I just reran that way, and am not seeing any difference between having it on and off now.

Starting SL with cool 28 fps but then on snowglobe2584-2......

Are Sperber added a comment - 05/Aug/09 03:44 AM
...clicking for Desktop Menue on the Windows Taskbar and the fps breaking down to 15. After that on snowglobe2584-3....

Are Sperber added a comment - 05/Aug/09 03:48 AM
... I click the Help Menue of the snowglobe viewer and the fps pushed up to 31.
So on stable and snowglobe versions are the same issue.

Are Sperber added a comment - 05/Aug/09 03:54 AM
btw. I had test it with patched and depatched Stylefiles thru vista-glazz. Always the same results.

Are Sperber added a comment - 06/Aug/09 08:11 PM
Ok, same effekt on Second Life 1.23.4 (123523). Defokussing the viewer crashes the fps 3x and fokussing push em up 4x. Its the same with this desktop button and also the startmenue. After playing a while with fokus/defokus the use of the desktop button has no! crashing effekt. But waiting a short time and the fps crash comes back.
But the crashing of fps after ca. 30 min without defokus the viewer isn't to explain with this, looks more that an automatic control prozess of performance (something reacts on this defokus things) goes to sleep or something like that.

i have been having this same issue acrross the board now, days of good perforance then sudden drops in fps, ive done everything suggested by othes etc. major performance problems here

Liv Leigh added a comment - 30/Sep/09 04:14 PM
Framerates on 1.23 are consequently half of the 1.22 or lower. The only reason I use 1.23 at the moment is for some windlight snapshots, which don't save well on my 1.22-based Greenlife Emerald viewer, which is otherwise far superior in performance. I should be downgrading the 1.23 'update' altogether, since it made the production Linden Labs supplied viewer into a useless hog for me for 95% of the time.

Jumpman Lane added a comment - 01/Oct/09 04:39 PM
what kills me liv is my answers in support about the issue. first they say unless i upgrade my graphics card im sol, i got a nvidia geforce 9500 with a gig of its own memory wich is better thatn or equal to every recommended graphix card on their list, i mean if a gefporce 8500 is ok an 9 series aint, i mean a 9500 has about the same perforance as a 8800, gawd. then they conceed that point and are like well as ur g card is unsupported...but all nvidia geforce g cards are, curious what they say next but my fps are awesome atm lol geeze.

Jumpman Lane added a comment - 11/Oct/09 11:27 AM
again im suffering the same issueandtrudging through the jira hoping to find this resolved somewhere

Jumpman Lane added a comment - 22/Oct/09 04:28 PM
say, what are your core temperatures like. my graphics card would run hot after a few minutes of running sl beacuse, i had neglected my interior computer cleaning and my fans were begining to run hot. cleaning my fans kept my graphic card temp running well within spec and not fps drops.

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 28/Oct/09 11:49 AM
I'm upgrading this to showstopper because in certain cases, especailly laptops and non-super high end ATI cards, it can completely disable your ability to login to SL and move. FPS being so low that you cant move a step, bring up a menu, type, or even do anything.

Jumpman Lane added a comment - 29/Oct/09 03:18 PM
again TEMPERATURE was the cause of my sudden fps drop. after a few miutes of running sl my gpu got hot and performance dropped as a result. keeping my graphix card temps well within spec totally solved this problem

AnnMarie Otoole added a comment - 29/Oct/09 03:41 PM
I have to agree, I had a new computer that ran less than 10FPS and frequently less than 1. It ran 100% CPU duty cycle and it would freeze frequently. Everything would freeze including the computer clock. I could end the day with the clock 1/2 hour off. Freezes over a certain limit would log me off SL. If I detected a freeze coming on (gaps in audio) I could quickly move focus away from SL, if the mouse had not frozen, and save it from crashing. I struggled for 2 years to find the cause but finally abandoned it and bought a new computer.

Later I put in a new video card in it. This card had a turbo cooling system. Now it works fine with FPS over 20.

I'm not suggesting this is the only answer, but certainly one explanation.

Jumpman Lane added a comment - 29/Oct/09 08:08 PM
i'd institute general cooling, especially if u have a docked graphix card (as opposed to an integrated one)
1. measure ur gpu temp, see ifitis running hot (consult specs of ur card)
2. clean inside ur computer using air in a can
3. use artic silver 5 on u cpu and heatsink ( thermal paste)
5. check r power supply enough to make all ur fans work properly

i really dont think that this performance issue s a bug at all
windlight is graphics intensive and if your gpu is running hot frame rates will drop

GadgetJoe Mimulus added a comment - 31/Oct/09 01:05 PM
I have been running into the same FPS issue on a mac since the new release of the viewer occurred.

Lag increases and I get a red light for the viewer on the lag meter. Any ideas?

Wiz Elswit added a comment - 07/Nov/09 12:26 PM
I took my laptop apart, and replaced the thermal paste with "Arctic silver 5" over the CPU, and integrated graphics chip... (not for the faint of heart). I am getting better frame rates overall now, but I still see about a 30% average drop in my frame rate between 1.22 and the latest release candidate.

However, it varies wildly.. there were some places where my frame rate was terrible (about 2fps) in 1.22, and its acceptable in 1.23 RC. When running on the high graphics setting, I do see my frame rate drop by about half when I turn on atmospheric shaders.
