Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-48106

 Description  « Hide
An otherwise active group (like Scripters of Second Life) occasionally falls silent, typically for about 20 minutes, and when messages resume, it is obvious from the messages that a conversation has been taking place meanwhile.
Comparing silent periods, it seems they do not coincide completely for the affected users, even if apparently overlapping somewhat.

Yes, I have experienced this also. It is surprising when a Group IM window opens up, someone says, "Quit spamming!", others chime in, and I have never received the antagonizing spam in question. (Can't complain about that!)
But just as frequently there are Group IMs that are clearly responses in an ongoing conversation I am not receiving.
When this is happening, and I try to question or reply, odds are on that my message will not appear for several minutes, eventually seeming idiotic when it does go through, or, I will get an error message telling me Group IMs are borked, or both.

To amend:
When I said, "error message telling me Group IMs are borked", I should have been more specific.

"Error messaging chat session with [group]. Error making request, please try again later."

The [group] would be a larger one, like GuRL 6, or FashCon, but not always. Some are more mid-sized. What constitutes a "large" group anyway?

Raising priority because this is severely andicapping many communication efforts.

Like alpha bet says, I too often get the Im window opening on scripters of second life, with someone sayign soemthing that seems larely random and irrelevant. Until a few minutes later, a question appears, and one realises it was the anser to that.

Communication is a vital part of what makes SL what it is. This bug(s) is making group communication darn near impossible.

The several-minutes lag is covered in the linked bug VWR-1298. Be careful about mentioning it here. Referring to related IM bugs in the comments was what got the original VWR-513 closed - as "Resolved", no less - losing all accumulated votes for IM problems.

You can mention relationships with other bugs - as long as the main work on the other bug stays in the other bug, if they're different causes. Also, VWR-513 was closed because it was too general (ALL the group IM bugs were being directed there), and probably because the main bug really is fixed (the "left this session" message flooding).

Changed to more accurate title.

The comments here mention the delay and the "Error messaging chat session", which are some of the same problems which send the 513 comments sprawling, and ultimately had the bug closed, so I just wanted to warn against collapsing the IM troubles into one again. This bug is not a generic "IMs are not working" bug, but specifically about losing all IMs from a group for long periods at a time, without any error messages, and not showing up after a long delay. The others have their own bug reports (VWR-1297 and VWR-1298), and comments/repros for those should be written there, not here. (Though I do find it highly likely that this one is closely related to the delay, VWR-1298).

(As for 513, the initial report of that did not mention the "left session" flood at all, so if it was closed due to that being fixed it was, 1) closing the wrong bug, and 2) not the reason given for closing it.
It was closed specifically with the message "we do not want to look at a bug if the comments mention (too many) other problems and vague it up".)

It's "interesting" to suddenly start receiving what is apparently the middle of a conversation in group chat.

Thanks for the info, I'm importing this as a distinguished and separate issue.

Moving this to Nice to Have, but leaving open for votes.

I am somewhat baffled by the assessment that being able to actually see what's going on in the groups you're member of is a "nice to have" feature.

I find it offensive that having things work right is officially downgraded to "nice to have"

I'm thinking about setting this back up untill someone can actually convince me that having important things, like group communication, work right is among the least important things in SL.....what all those companies that are making you bend over backwards will think when the communication tools you provide fail on them?
