Definitely more info is needed.... What sort of error messages, and when did they happen?
Celerria. Join Scripters of Second Life. And join in the group chat for a while. That'll give all the info you need to know.
This is a serious problem that's been ongiing for weeks now, despite supposedly being fixed twice. Okay, I did so. Extremely slow to echo the message back (10+ seconds) - perhaps due to large number of recipients? On my second message, I got this:
Error messaging chat session with Scripters of Second Life. ...which seems to appear as a sort of timeout on the message. I noticed a large number of two messages in the Debug Console, which may or may not be related: INFO: LLUUID::set: Bad UUID string: Retrieving role list (0/7)... INFO:LLEventPole::Impl::result LLEventPoll::Impl::completed <1> 1events (id The last one looks suspiciously like a parsing error of some sort. Don says that it happens to him with "pretty much every group" - but he says he participates mainly in large groups. Tested with a smaller group, at least 6 online. Seems to be fine, or at least more responsive (within a few seconds). Some reports of messages taking a while to echo (3ish seconds). Feels somewhat more likely to be a SVC problem than a VWR problem. This was previously mentioned in VWR-513 (closed because it was sprawling and ambiguous).
Yep - previously mentioned... and VWR-513 was tagged as "Closed - Resolved" - which was a very strange thing to do, if you asked me, since the issues were quite obviously not resolved.... anyway...
Still getting frequent "Error messaging chat session..." with various groups ... still wish it would get fixed. Closed because it still wont be fixed, even in the next update, according to the release notes at least. So expect this error to be around for a while, along with the "Insufficent Permissions" error as well as the "You never really leave group chat" bug.
"Error messaging chat session..." rec'd again at 09:37 AM PDT 25/Jun/07
"Error messaging chat session..." rec'd again at 11:26 AM PDT 25/Jun/07 (might as well keep recording the errors, till one of the developers believes there's a problem...)
I get the same error when trying to communicate in large group chats.
"Error messaging chat session with Fashion Consolidated" "Error making request, please try again later." I cannot outline a perfect reproduction though anecdotally, it seems to happen with my larger groups (of which Fashion Consolidated is the largest). I also cannot leave Group Chat sessions (still)... Still repeatedly getting the "Error messaging chat session.." popup between 09:30 and 09:50 AM PDT 26/Jun/07
Is this ever going to be acknowledged? And by "acknowledged" I mean, beyond flagging it as "Resolved/Fixed" because people added too many comments about additional problems with group chat... (see VWR-513) Still repeatedly getting the "Error messaging chat session.." popup — 12:30 PM PDT 27/Jun/07
sigh ... even though I doubt this is going to have any effect, I post yet again...
Still repeatedly getting the "Error messaging chat session.." popup — 9:30 AM PDT 28/Jun/07 I'm with Don on this problem with regard to frequency especially in the Scripters of Second Life group but it is not limited to that one. Usually the second or third message or so I try to send to the group starts kicking off these messages and these all would be in response to group chat sessions started by others.
What a surprise. It still has not been fixed, nor do I think it will be. It's going to eventually be "User Error" just like all SL bugs tend to become. Stuff like this is on the back burner until Voice is put on the main grid, because that is the most important thing right now in the Linden queue. Should the Residents try to take it upon themselves to fix the current list of issues within Second Life?
Still repeatedly getting the "Error messaging chat session.." popup — 9:17 AM PDT 01/July/07
Have noted, particularly in the last few days of June to present (1 Jul), that in addition to seeing this error more frequently, messages seem to be posting to the groups roughly sorted by length. Meaning that IM lines with fewer characters, posted within moments of each other, are posting to the group IM window out of sequence at an alarming rate, multiplying confusion.
(Sidebar re Richard Renneville's comment https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1297#action_18775 In common practice I will tend to have 5 or more group and individual IM tabs active at any given time. I can just imagine the confusion and waste of time this would create if I were to try to do anything remotely similar via audio chat, even assuming the hardware worked flawlessly on my end. related? issue. At times when this error is showing up repeatedly, individual messages are also often posting to group IM tabs in SIFO (shortest in first out) order rather than FIFO order.
Happens to me a lot, too. Groups "Scripters of Second Life" and "Fashion Emergency", both being large ones.
Not sure if it is related but yesterday I got a "You do not have permissions" error i group IM chat.
Arrrrgh... since this issue is still unassigned, repeated comments about it are obviously not doing any good... nonetheless:
Still repeatedly getting the "Error messaging chat session.." popup — all hours 02/July/07 sigh Just to add a datapoint, I also get this with Scripters of Second Life and also Super Awesome Lucky Chair Wow! and "Pier". I suppose these are all large groups, but exactly because of that the problem impacts many many users...
I just stopped replying in Group Chat, which sucks but my messages were either severely delayed or receiving the "error messaging chat session..." error. Just not worth it.
I cannot reproduce this in any other groups aside from my larges ones: First Look, Fashion Consolidated. Not that it's needed..
Buit I can definitely confirm this issue exists, is annoying, and should be fixed. /me votes. Hello
I have this bug with my group ... before voice and text working now its not ... and group chat its impossible i have 277 people in group .... the group its Quebec Libre please fix it for all the 277 people and all other group that can append ... its not fun all my people going in competitor group just for talking on voice ... because its working in their group thanks Re: group IM problems in general, I agree it sucks, every time this happens to me I'm reminded of such pain. (I was going to move this issue to SVC but looks clearer to find here.)
We've internally been discussing a longer-term project that's needed to scale this, and related communication breakdown problems, for future growth. We've also been looking at possibilities we might be able to do sooner. It won't be easy to revamp the system, and from what I understand from our devs, a prior precedent doesn't really exist for massive group chat the way we have it in Second Life, so it's tough to look for inspiration or an implementation to base ourselves on. Those curious about the technical architecture are welcome to attend Zero Linden's Office Hours (info @ https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Office_Hours We definitely want to make this better – and BTW, I should note the more Lindens are inworld and using Second Life for meetings, the more we're noticing it too. I know some of you reading this have concerns that Lindens never see this problem, but of course that's not the case. As I get more updates, I'll share 'em so you can be apprised of progress. It does look like the idea "what if there is a 2000 member group?" never came up when designing the group IM system.
There are some related issues, too: And of course there are a ton of other things we want in groups : It does seem to need an overhaul. 1.13 was good - group roles are HUGELY useful, but more does need to be done. Given that bigger groups will become more common as SL grows, I think a serious effort needs to be made in making it possible to effectively manage and use large groups. Whatever the need for overhauling groups, that shouldn't get in the way of fixing one specific very basic show-stopper, the inability to write a message to a group which you are a member of, or owner of.
Torley,
I don't think this is a scalability problem! This started with one particular version, one that changed the protocol with regard to groups. Group chat was FAST and NEVER had these problems prior to this! There were large groups prior to this problem, this literally happened all of a sudden with one release, around the time that the extreme "someone has left the group" spam started. So I don't buy that this isn't a pure, normal, bug. There's got to be a fix other than "rewriting the whole mess". Similar to this issue is the constant error when tying to open a group chat, I find in particular Mental Mentors and the Official Mentors group has this problem the most, I am using Candidate Release Viewer and I have found that on this viewer the chat issues are far worse, with error sending a message, opening the channel, chat being sent in the wrong order and the chat being repeated.
Alos similar to this on the candidate viewer are that when it has the message, where I am guessing the group name should be is a sort of symbol instead, like when someone in Japan types a symbol and you have no language pack installed, This is on alot fo them types of messages where I guess the 'string' of infromation is not gotten by the system or is incorrect. This issue doesn't fully duplicate VWR-513 because it talks about "when using" the groups but where we experience the error is when STARTING the message, which is the wording in 513.
This issue is still existing. It has not gotten better. In many groups it is stuck at "Starting session with <group name> please wait."
Lets push this up and get someone at LL to at least acknowledge it. Added ONE image example of what happenes, over and over again....
I get these error messages only in WindLight (79674 (binary download) as well as 79809 (SVN)) both when starting an IM session myself or when a group IM pops up because of new participants having said something. Sometimes the IM window will vanish after clicking [ok] on the warning popup. If it doesn't, messages often will be delayed from several seconds up to minutes. It doesn't seem to happen on current normal nor on RC viewers. (Though it used to in earlier versions, quite some time ago)
I get this error every once in a while, but not since the latest version of WL (though I haven't been on it very long since it only came out last night). Usually I haven't even brought up the group IM tab, and it just tells me there is an error, and closes it before I can even look at it.
I've had this error appear in last couple of windlight versions.
I get it sometimes when someone starts a group chat in the mentors group, sometimes I don't even touch the tab. It appears as the session opens, the error appears and the tab closes. I'm sure I had this earlier too, when someone included me in a conference. This occurs when receiving group messages also.
Removed Affects Version/s of "First Look: WindLight" – as it says when you're editing an issue, "ONLY select a "First Look" if this issue ONLY affects that version." We do this to better focus on FL-specific issues. Thanks! Hey Torley, it seems like the last big(ger) post you made about this was in July of 07. I emailed Robin a couple months ago with links to some other bugs about this problem and she got back to me asap. She recognized the problem and said you guys are working on it, and referred the bugs in question to the dev team. Unfortunately that was about it. I think she also mentioned the problem briefly during a QA session she was at recently.
Can you provide us a more detailed response, such as what the cause is and what the roadmap is to fix it? If you guys could do it as an actual blog.secondlife.com post, I think it would go a lot farther to assuage the public than the discussions we have on JIRA about it. On a related note, and given that I have no idea about the software platform you guys use for the chat system, has any consideration been given to using an IRC server? A lot of IRC servers have been around since the early 90's and are well, well tested and refined. They typically can handle hundreds of people in a channel at a time. The group chat system we have in SL doesn't seem to be all that different on the surface. You're awesome! Thanks for keeping everyone informed about so much stuff. Geuis I have seen this message about only selecting "FirstLook" if an issue only affects the FirstLook version, but exactly that seems to be the case on my machine. (Except non-recent versions (pre 1.17.x or so) are to be considered, too). When I mentioned this error message at a FirstLook office hour, Pastrami told me to file it on JIRA. As usual I searched if the issue wasn't already present and considered this one here matching, so I modified it instead of filing a new one. 1.18.5.3 doesn't seem affected on my system, only FirstLook shows the error message. (Though, I can't say for sure, as there doesn't seem to be a 100% reliable repro)

Those curious about the technical architecture are > welcome to attend Zero Linden's Office Hours (info @ > https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Office_Hours > topics. I think I wandered on Zero Linden's office hours once, by accident, as they don't get posted to the in-world event calendar in the Search box - sure the All search will find the Wiki page with them - but that doesn't give me the nice little NOTIFY button I can click to get a drop-down menu at 5 mins before - which I find so VERY helpful when Prospero's hours are listed. Of course, it's hard to be sure - as the Search for events only looks at the start of the title string, and tries to match it. As for scalability - the size of the group as a whole shouldn't be a big issue - the size of the group online at one time, should be the determinant. With groups of 1000 or so - it would not surprise me if normally only a hundred or so at one time are online - and THAT kind of occupancy is not that uncommon on the larger IRC networks. Even on some of the smaller, more focused IRC networks, channels of 50+ people are not uncommon. Truthfully, nothing really that new with so-called IM products. Those who used the Internet before this silly Web thing came along remember things like finger, talk, IRC, and e-mail. Especially talk - instead of bothering with the little flag packet to tell you that someone was typing - the program just SENT the last few characters they'd typed! Instant messages that wait until you get around to hitting send just aren't all that instant, really. The Internet has a LOT of history - sometimes I wonder how many of the current users bother to look at how the problems were solved at a time when bandwidth and latency were HUGE issues. This just began happening to me and when i use both the Release candidate and Windlight. It happens across all groups and at random hours. I receive the same error messages as are shown above. It seems to be happening with higher and higher frequency. It has happened with groups...Happy Days (1500+), Blue Furion (unknown), Bailers (also unknown), and several other smaller groups i am a member of. Fairchang chat last night was the first time in at least 2 weeks that i Have had a chat continue uninterrupted.
This has been even worse recently.
Rather than just crashing on group sessions that were started on login, this now occurs randomly with ANY I use Windlight 1.19.0, and I'm getting this several times a day. Sometimes I get it when trying to open a chat session with a group, but mostly I get it when I'm not saying anything at all. Group chat is nearly unusable for me.
This had never happened in the past but happening frequently now with no other changes than updating to Release 1.19.0(5). It is making group incoming unusable - and group outgoing virtually impossible.
I've also started experiencing this problem since the version 1.19.0(5) update. Never had any problems with this before the latest update, but now it happens constantly with my group chat sessions.
For me, the problem is intermittent - some group chats go on for ages without any hassles or errors, while others bomb out (ie. the chat window shuts down completely and the error message pops up) after only a couple of lines of chat. And that's with me just sitting and reading the text - I've been wondering how much worse it might be if I tried to participate in any of the chat sessions. So far this problem has occurred with around 5 or 6 different groups, at different times of the day, and I've counted over two dozen occurances in less than 24 hours. This error also occurs when you want to close the Group IM without initiating the Group IM or responding to it. It has become worse with the new viewer update and the new release candidate appears to be plagued with it as well.
I think it is getting much much worse. For me it is happening to all my groups, regardless of size of group, regardless of viewer. Nearly all the time. Forget trying to build anything, script anything, play anything like slingo, etc. My groups are maxed. That means I have 25 groups that are constantly spamming me with these error messages. Last night I went through 10 minutes of sitting unable to do a thing but click the stupid "ok" button because apparently a couple of the groups had lively conversations going on... I have no Idea what about. Ended up logging and going to something else. I cannot start a chat in a group other than the one I own, (which has a total of six members, its my family group) and that only part of the time, I cannot do my job in sl as I cannot maintain the window to watch for VIPs. It started out as occasional, it has grown worse for me over the last couple of weeks. This is obviously happening regardless of group size, system specs/types, whether you or someone else initiates conversations, whether you are group owner or group member, to chatting and group notices. It seems to be every single aspect of group communications. They are actually calling some instances of this resolved???
An extremely irritating issue; In our group classes are annonced in group IM... or they would be announced if it didnt usually not work... which in turn means ntices are sent which are more annoying.
affects the current released version 1.19.0 and RC 1.19.1 also.
90-95% of all group chat is failing, incoming and outgoing as well.
Whenever a group message is received, 90-95% of the time this error pops up: "Unable to join group session." The group chat window is then closed. Important to note that the group message is indeed received, prior to error! When replying to an ongoing group, the same error appears approximately 90% of the time. When starting a new group session, the same error appears approximately 70% of the time. This occurs at all hours, in all places, in different classes of sims and with 24 different groups. My stats: Second Life 1.19.0 (5) Feb 28 2008 17:18:12 (Second Life Release) You are at 292947.8, 278366.2, 102.9 in Black Lion located at sim3729.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.22.210:13006) CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2188 MHz) I have been having this issue with ONE(1) of my groups which is quite small. All the other groups work fine but this one has only ever worked one(1) time since I joined a month ago.
Very strange. Selecting the released version...the instructions ask that we select only 1 version
I get this issue maybe once out of every five times I try to start up or send a message to any group larger than thirty members, often with few of them online, though it gets worse the more people it's trying to be sent with.
I'm a member of a military, with over 100 members, and the main group chat is for days at a time rendered unuseable by this. I believe this is a problem that gets worse the larger the number of group members within a session - for example I've noticed that a large group like Mental Mentors can be back "online" and a few members start chatting in it with no problem, but as more and more members join the session, the longer the delays and the more likely to get a chat error.
Another thing worth pointing out ... the error is a kind of "time out" that appears if the message has not been successfully posted in the IM within a fixed time. However, that doesn't mean the message has failed - it is often the case that almost immediately after the chat error appears, so does the message in the IM. It seems to be a server issue rather than a bug. I was having this issue, then it magically got better. Since the downtime last weekend, it's started over again.
This has now been happening not only in group IM but the private friends conferencing IMs. There seems to be no predictability to it or way to fix it.
I am a teacher at TUI, and this group IM problem is CRIPPLING us. Our students depend on group IM for notice of classes. Help!
Just want to add, this issue is STILL here, even with newest RC 1.21.1.
Most of the time, i want to write something in a group chat, I get this error message. |
