 Description  « Hide
Note: This appears to be a Nvidia issue, there is a similar issue for ATI cards at VWR-13337

This is with latest graphics drivers. Attempting to change outfits makes entire av except head disappear and head textures warp. As the screenshot I'll upload will show the head is still screwy (see the lips) and nothing else has appeared.

I cannot get this to happen for me, how exactly are you changing outfits?

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 21/Apr/09 12:49 PM
I keep my outfits seperated by folder as shown below. the top level for each one are folders and below contains are individual items.

Main outfit (folder)
-contains
---shape
---skin
---eyes
---clothing
---various attachments, huds, etc....

fishing outfit (folder)
-contains
---clothing
---fishing pole and other attachments

I had my fishing outfit on minus attachments and to change outfits I went to my main outfits folder, expanded its convents and did add to outfit. As of yet I have not been able to fix this so that my av rezzes so I can't yet replicate this.

Note: I have not been able to confirm but when attempting to logon again with a regular viewer the face still appears messed up even though everything else as expected loads normally so there may be some corruption going on as well which is quite serious if true. The attached images weren't done with daytime set but with daytime set they look only slightly brighter than black and still look like rotten.

Moon Metty added a comment - 22/Apr/09 01:34 PM
Dragging a folder with an outfit on my avatar made me invisible as well, including my face. All attachments were normal.
I deliberately did not rebake, and waited for Nyx' office hour. Nyx (also using 1.23) saw me invisible.
Rebaking made me visible again.

Relating your observation to my own JIRA report.

In my case, doing a "Replace Outfit" when selecting an appearance folder in inventory triggered this, but so did wearing a new skin. Character rebake fixes it temporarily.

Ever have the eyes, lashes and eyebrows remain, while the rest of the avatar vanished?

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 30/Apr/09 05:47 PM
I've never had that happen but I had my prim hair rez first (odd considering attachments are usually the last to rez).

On the other situation I mentioned with corruption, when switching to this viewer back to the Nicholaz viewer I did notice some corruption with the lip texture (see the lip texture of my screenshots from the PN) which seems very odd considering that they're two different clients in two different folders. It was fixed with a rebake but since I'm not sure if it's a fluke and/or can be reproed I'm not going to start a new issue on it yet unless someone else reports seeing it.

Removed all clothes. then placed an undershirt on then a shirt over that with alpha parts, at a fast speed. They rezed in at the same speed showing my upper body totally transparent,. until i removed the shirt and put i back on. or rebaked textures

Second time i tried to re-create it. i did the same, only this time it flashed transparent and didn't stay like that.

Still broken in 1.23 RC1.
I replaced outfit to switch from my Furry avatar to Human, and all but my head vanished!

I've also noticed this happening since I upgraded my Release Candidate today.
when I remove my clothing by clicking the folder in my inventory, and taking them off. my body disappears. . leaving just my head, hair and jewelry
ALSO. . when i changed my shape, my Head diasappeared, except my eyes and hair. . . .

Dorota Darwin added a comment - 08/May/09 02:25 AM
I had updated my viewer today.
I have exacly the same problems as described above. If one part of awatar, say upper has no clothes on it, it gets transparent. If lower avatar part has not clothes entire avatar is transparent, (exept head and attachments). What a mess :--(

nyx linden added a comment - 08/May/09 02:03 PM
fix is applied to internal 1.23 branch. Should be rolling out with RC2.

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 08/May/09 02:11 PM
Thanks for the fix Nyx, will that fix both the face corruption and the disappearing issue or just one or the other?

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 08/May/09 02:13 PM
Marking this as fix pending per Nyx's comment above, please update with the exact number for the internal branch if you have a more exact version number.

nyx linden added a comment - 08/May/09 02:17 PM
the "face corruption" is probably the layerset changes referred to in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-12962 .
This should be fixed in RC1.

The invisibilty bug is what I am referring to in this JIRA, and should be in RC2. Linking VWR-12962 as related.

Sanpierre Juran added a comment - 11/May/09 10:59 AM
I have had the "head disappears leaving only eyes" version of this happen to me once with the 1.23 RC after a series of a dozen or so skin changes. Have not reproduced it since.

Ashelyn Dryke added a comment - 12/May/09 06:33 AM
Seen this happen at least once to someone else editing their appearance nearby. I don't think it's really happened to me though. My av also tends to blink in and out of existence when walking quite often; not sure if it's the same bug. And when moving my cam certain ways sometimes objects will blink in and out too.

Iliana Llewellyn added a comment - 13/May/09 12:33 PM
I just had the exact same thing happen to me.

I logged on, using the 1.23RC, and took off a pair of gloves that my avatar was wearing. This action rendered my entire torso invisible.

Changing pants brought my upper body back into appearance- changing shirts made it invisible again. lol. Was a little disconcerting.

nyx linden added a comment - 21/May/09 08:27 AM
For those of you affected by this bug, please try clearing your cache, getting the latest RC (1.23 RC2 available on the downloads page), and forcing a rebake of your avatar. Please report back here if you're still seeing this issue on your machine even after a successful rebake of your avatar's textures. Thanks!

Chandni Khondji added a comment - 06/Jun/09 11:02 AM
Have this problem too, tried clearing cache, also rebaking, only going back to the old viewer made me visible again.

urantia jewell added a comment - 14/Jun/09 07:47 PM
Changing clothes or clothing items causes skin to become invisible, all attachments remain visible, including eyes, prim hair, etc...

Have had this problem with every iteration of 1.23 RC. Has happened to me with RC4.

I have found that Rebaking textures will temporarily fix the problem until I change another clothing item (non-prim). It doesn't happen every single time but it is most of the time. Another rebake will again fix it.

Mac Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz 2Gb Ram ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128Mb OS X 10.4.11

P.S. have also noticed that almost all alpha textures are very slow to rezz with all iterations of 1.23 RC. Although, that's a problem suited for another bug report. However, it may be related in some way.

This issue us still NOT FIXED in the version 1.23.4 OFFICIAL CLIENT that LL let out the door while still FULL of bugs! Image "1.23.4still_glitched.JPG" was done today with the 1.23.4 "Official client".

Do you guys think that this is just a funny joke, or what? How could the coders possibly release 1.23.4 as an OFFICIAL RELEASE CLIENT while this bug is still NOT FIXED?

Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem, but I have found a temp workaround until a fix is applied.

Basically, go into Edit Appearance mode, and it works.

Thank goodness rebaking solves the problem, but when changing clothes again upper torso disappears except attachments.

Hope this will be fixed very soon!

Reworked summary slightly to say some actions since there seems to be more causes than just changing outfits that can cause this. Going to seriously consider reopening this if the "pending" fix doesn't appear in a version soon since this still seems to hit people with the latest RC.

bau ur added a comment - 16/Jun/09 11:08 PM
I went into Appearance mode, closed Appearance, and immediately activated a dance animation. At that moment my face skin entirely disappeared. I guess the message is ...beware. You may not just lose some dignity when you dance all goofy...you may entirely lose face

Subsequent attempts did not reproduce so I do not know if the dancing actually was involved.

This is not a matter of the avatar being overloaded. I have a low ARC.

Guys, VWR-12906 is primarily a nVidia-related problem: Most ATi users don't experience missing avatar parts like that.
Ghosting != Missing avatar parts.

ATi and nVidia have different OpenGL requirements - issue needs to be fixed seperately with seperate QA etc.

ATi Radeon users (Ghosting issue): VWR-13337

Obviously this is not "fix pending" for version 1.23, since 1.23 was released... Reopening.

Vixen Triellis added a comment - 17/Jun/09 07:19 AM
I also have this problem with 1.23.4. I downloaded it a few hours ago to see how it was, but I couldnt see other people's bodys, neither could i see my own. I did not bother to test rebake. Appearance mode see mto work but for people who spoof to alot of places, this will be a big problem. Hench why I am staying with 1.22.

I downgraded back to rainbow viewer fr 1.22 to keep my rlv experience going....

LL: You should at least not release anything untill these are fixed. Please do not start to force us usign an 1.23.x based viewer that buggy like this! This is lame and should be solved as highest priority!

updated title and description to note the distinction between Nvidia and ATI issues

August Halsey added a comment - 17/Jun/09 09:46 PM
Since recent update, I have found major issues with transparency. My avatar is often invisible or partially invisible. Any trees or landscaping comes directly through the house as if there are no walls. This issue has worsened greatly since the new update. I recently downloaded the 1.23.4 version and noticed these problems shortly after. Problem exits with windows users too.

Yukinoroh Kamachi added a comment - 18/Jun/09 12:13 AM - edited
I'm going back to 1.22 as well. Invisible bodies, objetcs that you're not looking at turning grey after 9 min, and also crashes... 1.23 feels more like still a release candidate (if not a nightly build).

Chalice Yao added a comment - 18/Jun/09 12:48 AM
I am as well still experiencing this with the final 1.23.4 code, and have been experiencing this throughout most of the RC time.

I can even point out an outfit this happens with 90% of the time once I get time to log in again. I shall post the location to get it at for a Linden here.

Leanne Karas added a comment - 18/Jun/09 03:10 AM
I wish I would have read all this before updating to 1.23.4 - this is now a major issue for me and on top of my avatar disappearing when I wear some clothes - alpha textures are not working properly on attached prims either and look weird. I would upload screenshots but java won't allow me to for some reason.

If anyone has a zipped copy of the 1.22 release please let me know!

Emma Hazelnut added a comment - 18/Jun/09 06:45 AM
Wow, great to see someone else suffering from this! Happening for me in both the latest public release (SecondLife_1_23_4_123908 for MAC) and in the candidate release (SecondLife_1_23_4_123523_RELEASECANDIDATE for MAC). It took 2 days of total panic, deleting preferences, clearing cache etc. etc before I figured out that re-baking textures will fix it BUT it is totally boring to have to re-bake every time you change clothes, makeup or hair!!

I would imagine anyone new to sl just wouldn't bother continuing, we persevere thorough all kinds of lag, general slowness and crashing at inappropriate times but if your avi disappears why stay??

PLEASE FIX THIS AS A MATTER OF URGENCY FOR THE SAKE OF SL!!

teal freenote added a comment - 18/Jun/09 11:25 AM
Glad you reopened this. it is NOT fixed. We lived thru the hair disappears when you cam close, but I'm not going to be a floating head all the time. I've gone back to earlier version. You are gonna hear such yelling if you make this manditory with this bug, among others.

Kosmos Asturias added a comment - 18/Jun/09 11:38 AM
Got the same thing on an AMD Phenom X4 (quad core) 9150e with a GeForce 8600 GT.
I have 4GB ram, and am running Windows Vista 64bit. Far as I know I have the latest updates.

August Halsey added a comment - 18/Jun/09 12:00 PM
In response to Emma Hazelnut,

You are right, because although I have learned a lot in a very short time, I am new on SL. The longer I'm here, the more I learn, and the more frustrated i get with the entire system. With these problems included I am feeling angered to even sign on. Invisible Avitars, Tranparent texture problems, Land and tier problems, Linden problems, prim allowances etc, Its just not fun anymore.

I do not know if I will even continue with it even though I spent tons of time and money trying to create the environment in SL that would make me happy, just to find out nothing works right. It can be a very expensive game to play, which is unjustified in my mind.

  • Avatar textures are messed up each time on login. Textures from the viewer or the surrounding are applied to the avatar.
  • Sometimes on changing the skin, my face becomes completely transparent. I could repro this a couple of times by simply wearing another skin.
  • Changing clothes often leads to a gray or mistextured face.

This issue seems to have resolved for me after following advise of turning preferences down to low and then returning them to normal.

Coincidence or the solution? Who knows, but have not seen the problem return the last couple of days.

I have this issue to, with the official 1.23.4 release, but I see it happen to every body that changes their clothes by any means. I have a photo of a woman showing a very patchy looking skin, but she's naked so might not be appropriate to put here. Well, you can see her naughty bits, and mouth, but not much else.

Repro:

  • Log into SL
  • TP to another sim
  • Open inventory, and locate an outfit folder you'd like to change your AV into
  • After selecting the folder, right click on it and select 'Replace Outfit' from dropdown
  • Observe if outfit on your viewer is fully visible on your AV

Expected Results:

  • That the selected folder of a different outfit actually loads & is visible as expected.

Actual Results:

  • The body of my avatar was invisible. All my attachments however were visible, including my eyeballs. My face & body were invisible on my viewer. This state remains even if I teleport to another sim. That said, only certain residents saw me the way I viewed myself on my viewer. Several other residents saw that my face was visible, as well as my attachments, but my body was still invisible...this is what I was usually seeing much of last week. There were a handful of residents who viewed my AV as should have looked fully rezzed.

Temporary solution:

  • Bring up the Advanced menu (CTRL-ALT-D)
  • From the Advanced menu, go to Advanced>Character>Rebake Textures or CTRL-ALT-R
  • Body textures should load and appear as originally expected

Additional findings:

  • Per Nyx Linden: The issue is that textures you baked using the 1.22 client aren't valid on the 1.23 client (the alpha channel is wrong). We cache these baked textures on our servers, so when you log in for the first time with a 1.23 client you might see this bug.
  • As I'm going to different regions I've not visited in some time, then donning avatars I've not worn in some time, I'm seeing this invisi bug. Rebaking the textures seems to be working thus far, and I'm not having the same issue with the same AV I've recently worn before in the 1.23 viewer.

From VWR-14385:

I found how this can be fixed when I have had someone run into me asking Help for the Ghost effects happening ... it seems to cure the problem when... I ask them to go into Advanced>Rendering>tests>volume
I ask them to do this.. Please uncheck the volume Once.. click out.. Re bake.. and vala they appear sometimes it's taken up to two times to do.. but still it works.. this is the method I've found about one week ago and tested it on a few others.. for clarifications..
Hope this helps.. out in some degree..
thank you

After having read kona's post I have given the new viewer a try and I think that's right...

I have noticed a similar issue, but only occasionally and only on others. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+T (show transparent) makes the whole skin suddenly show properly. Pressing again, to disable the option, toggles the skin back to half invisible. Pictures to follow. I don't think I saw this before 1.23.

she also gets error messages:

This has only happened to me once and I cannot duplicate it. I was naked and accidentally TPd so immediately TPd back and only had a head when I returned. Rebake would not fix the problem, but putting on clothes did.

It happened to me twice to me yesterday on viewer 1.22.11. I'm not at that computer right now, but here are some relevant stats:

NVidea 8800GT
Windows XP service pack 3
CPU: dual Intel Xeons

Both times, I was changing skins. I lost the torso one time, the next time I lost the head. Rebake fixed the problem both times.

I posted as a new issue because while some funky stuff was happening as shown in this one, it was NOT the same as what my issue was, even though it was marked as a duplicate and redirected here. My ticket was VWR-15062 if anyone has an interest.

First of all... several of the options for my issue I had expressed already trying, though I did neglect to mention that I had already cleared cache.

Second of all... the solution to my issue had NOTHING to do with the cookie cutter solutions which were geared to back me into a corner and remove one of my monitors from the equation.

I am currently running on two monitors with a beautiful picture in my viewer and no issue.

In my case all I had to do was put the viewer in the other monitor screen and go into and out of appearance and viola! It is lovely! For anyone running dual monitors, I recommend trying this solution as it completely fixed my issue and didn't require new drivers, disconnecting anything or buying new video cards.

I run a ViewSonic and a Daewoo. Before the ViewSonic I had a different flatscreen that did not have this issue and I was able to move SL between the two monitors without issue. This may be related to the ViewSonic directly.

Rebaking does work...If this is as widespread an issue as I think it is, it would be nice if LL warned people and told them how to fix it instead of letting them go into a panic, as I did for the last few hours trying to figure out what was wrong.

I've seen this when creating a new avatar immediately after installing the Second Life on a mac and logging in for the first time.

After logging out, this was never an issue again - see the 'starting avatar' screenshot.

SecondLife log and Crash Report related to the 'Invisible Neck' issue MISC-3116

Whip Redgrave added a comment - 22/Sep/09 03:38 PM
I was told to make a comment over here b/c the previous ticket was a duplicate of this one. I'm not entirely sure that's the case, but I'll give LL the benefit of the doubt here. I have uploaded some screen shots of what I have been seeing. Basically, at first just my neck was disappearing. Now my arms are starting to look like a bad skin application. The problem all started last nite with the neck, spread to my av's lower arms and now encompasses all the arms up to the shoulder.

As suggested, I have cleared my cache (I do this regularly anyway), uploaded a SL log and CrashReport and updated my GPU drivers. This didn't rectify the problem. I tried rebaking, a process I've become all too familiar with as a long-time resident. This also did not help.

Below is my system information:

Hello, I followed all the suggestions from the original ticket and it did work temporarily. However, the problem is back again, and my avatar's head has that invisible band around the neck. It's not only me who can see this, every other avatar around me can see it too. Here is the sys info requested.

I have this issue too. Mine is only around my eyebrows, when I zoom in close to my face. (at least I haven't noticed it happening anywhere else on my avatar.) Picture is attached. My specs are below.

I just upgraded to the RC viewer 2 days ago. It wasn't happening before then.

This happens when you bake a skin on a .22 viewer and then the same day and sim, use a .23 viewer and load the same baked skin from the simulator/cache.
