REPRO
- Make sure your sound playback equipment is correctly setup.
- Enable Edit menu > Preferences > "Play Streaming Music When Available".
- Go to a parcel with a music URL playing. (About Land > Media tab's "Music URL".)
- On Music control above the toolbar, move the volume slider to maximum (all the way to the right).
- Push play button.
* Observe: Volume level is loud.
- Relog at same location.
- Push play button again.
* Observe: Volume is much softer, even though you didn't change the position of the slider.
= Expected: Volume level should correspond to slider position.
> Workaround: Click the volume slider to reset the volume level to its actual setting.

I was able to repro this on Windows. I wasn't able to repro it in the First Look: Voice viewer with rearranged sound controls.

Original info from Barney Boomslang:

When setting the slider for the stream sound volume, that slider position is saved. But on login, the actual stream volume is very low. If you touch the slider itself only once - no need to actually slide it, just press it - the sound reverts to the actual setting in the music control and works fine until the next login. Looks like the stream volume is reset to some internal default on client startup.

this also happens to me, a windows user

This problem has caused major problems in two gigs that were very important to me and I didn't know until tonight that SL had bugged them. There's some relief in knowing my system is alright but there's no point in scheduling additional gigs before the problem is resolved.

Seven Juran - 18/Jun/07 08:33 PM
I thought this was a problem on my end. Glad to hear it isn't my problem, but it is very annoying and not good for my visits to live events.

SeanMcPherson Senior - 19/Jun/07 05:02 AM
This is definitely not just an OS X bug. Although I'm obviously biased to the side of live music, this basically affects all users, regardless of whether they visit our thriving live music scenes, due to the fact that music is such a critical element in SL for many, many sims.

jacqueline foxley - 19/Jun/07 07:02 AM
This issue is extremely annoying particularly if you set aside a specific time to see a performance when you don't really have the time to do so. It must be very disheartening to the musicians who put so much time and effort into bringing a live show to SL as well.

Hiroaki Rhino - 19/Jun/07 05:30 PM
I and people had blamed the musicians side before, and tonight I got information from other listener, and it was a problem of SL, I didn't even know this bug existed. It is annoying, confusing, MISLEADING, and so minor that it should be addressed RIGHT AWAY!!

Hiroaki Rhino - 19/Jun/07 05:37 PM
I am on Windows by the way.

Piper Minogue - 20/Jun/07 05:36 AM
I am NOT a musician/performer at SL, however I am an avid supporter and listener of live music. I was not aware of this bug at all. I attend anywhere from 3 - 5 live music gigs a day at SL. I did notice that all the stream levels seemed to be lower than normal, but I wrote it off as my system. Now, thinking back on it, it was across the board on all streams being carried by different providers, however when I would plug in CDs or another source of music outside of SL, my sound was just fine. Please fix this bug. I know the musicians put hundreds and thousands of dollars into their equipt to be here and to have a great sound along with the hours spent on rehearsing and practicing, only to be cut off at the knees with a bug. It is also frustrating as a listener when you schedule time to go and hear a gig, and can't hear it at all.

Thanks to each of your reports, and those of you who voted to let us know how much you care. Quick riser -- 51 votes right now! I'll bring this to the attention of our devs. I was able to repro this in the current main viewer, but not in First Look: Voice 1.17.0 (113) (where the sound controls have been rearranged).

AldoManutio Abruzzo - 21/Jun/07 02:43 AM
I AM a musician and I work with the full dynamic range of my instruments, from near silence to very loud. In some ways,it is very gratifying to know that there is a bug that has caused my audiences to not be able to hear my playing as it should be heard. I work with both Windows and OS X.

Please look into resolving this quickly; I'm tired of getting IMs telling me to turn up my stream!

Live Music is a major economic driver of SL. I spend AT LEAST as much tipping musicians as I do on tier. Please respect the dollars Live Concerts add to the SL econmoy and fix this.

moshang zhao - 05/Jul/07 10:13 PM
The bug is still present in 1.17.3.0

EponymousDylan Ra - 07/Jul/07 12:28 PM
I've attached a simple patch for this, against the 1.17.2.0 source.

Torley Linden - 11/Jul/07 06:13 AM
I'll ping Poppy re: the patch, thanks EponymousDylan!

Bibi Book - 11/Jul/07 10:48 AM
The bug still open: Does that mean this simple bug with huge results to all concerts in SL is not fixed in 1.18? - What a shame!

Torley Linden - 11/Jul/07 12:13 PM
@Bibi and everyone who cares: I've got good news for you -- Poppy just fixed this internally, with a code-review from Aura and thanks to EponymousDylan Ra's patch. Hope this'll help our live performers and their adoring audiences. =o)

Watch http://blog.secondlife.com for release notes of when this'll be included in a public version of Second Life, hopefully soon!

Torley Linden - 11/Jul/07 12:30 PM
Also of note, the First Look: Voice renders the need for this moot, so if you're feeling anxious, please try it instead.

Poppy Linden - 11/Jul/07 12:34 PM
(Contributed patch verified)
Description: setInternetStreamGain was being called when the audio UI was adjusted, but not when it was created, so the Audio Engine default was being used until it was adjusted. Thanks to EponymousDylan Ra for the patch!
