 Description  « Hide
The client crashes on Linux here in 99% of all situations in the moment, when it switches to 3D; in very rare and not reproducible cases I get a 3D image (with distorted textures) and crash about 5 seconds later. On the same PC I can use SL on Windows Vista with also latest 3D driver.

ok, here we go:

downgrading to SL 1.21 does not help; same for minimal graphics settings. BUT downgrading the driver to the version from Ubuntu 8.10 helped - even though it also downgraded the performance to a pre-2000-PC . The version in the repositories for Ubuntu 9.04 (Catalyst 9.1) works and gives a pretty decent performance.

Zenity, please see comments on these issues

and other links on the Meta-Issue 'Issues with ATI Catalyst 9.1/9.2' VWR-12080

There are a few suggested workarounds re the crashes, mostly involving setting the Catalyst to default settings.

Re the textures issue, do you see anything similar to those already reported ?

Your comments will help the LL Developers investigate these issues.

Gotcha! Yes, that was it. Enabled "Catalyst AI" here on 9.1 and both problems are back. I have no idea, what this feature does, but it's the key to the crash.

Talked to ATI. Looks like it was a problem in the driver of confusing accessing compressed textures vs. uncompressed textures and has been fixed internally by ATI, but probably will not go out by 9.3. 9.4 will most likely clear it up.

ATI have released Catalyst 9.4 (4/8/2009). Please test the new drivers and add a comment.
