Seen a number of similar issues to this, but not with my graphics card: Screen goes black for a few seconds, comes back on, SL's blacked out, get a message saying my display driver has stopped responding and successfully recovered, have to force quit SL

 Description  « Hide
Not sure how to recreate it since I'm usually only having just logged in and I crash within two minutes. Some times it manages to go for five hours or more. I'll be in SL, usually just standing around since I don't get a chance to do much else before I crash. But that's enough of that, to the point. The time between crashes has been very random, from five or less seconds to five or so hours (occationally more), and anything in-between that.

1. After a random period of time, my screen goes black
2. After a few seconds, my screen comes back on, however SL is blacked out and next to the program name it says (not responding)
3. A message pops up from my task bar stating that my graphics driver has stopped responding and has recovered.
4. I have to force quiet SL
5. Reboot SL and return to step one.

I have included the system data "About SL" provided, with any luck it will help to find a quicker resolution to this problem which I am clearly aware of multiple SL residents having. And don't tell me this is a duplicate, I don't care, I'm just trying to do my small insignificant pointless part in trying to get this issue resolved. I would add my crash reports, but I don't know where they are. If I find them and I can edit this, I'll add them later.

https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=4209 will tell you where to find your crash report; you are looking for a file named SecondLifeCrashReport.log

Andromeda, please add a comment on the Graphics driver version you have.

Please attach your latest SecondLife log and CrashReport before you restart Second Life and also your Settings file from C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings

Overheating can cause freezes/crashes; Nvidia have a system monitor which is great for checking the temperature of your graphics card. http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.03.html

Please see these articles in Knowledge Base How can I improve performance ? and Turning off WindLight rendering.

For technical, time-sensitive and/or Region/Account specific issues please Submit a Ticket with Support as per JIRA Home page They will be able to give you help and advice.

Thank you : )

Next time I log in in-world I'll get the crash report since I've tried reinstalling SL (Again), so that might clear the reports.

And I don't think it's my graphics card overheating because I can just boot up my computer first thing that day and it happens.

I've tried turning off Windlight and that hasn't helped. And it's just SL, I can run any game I want on full detail, and I don't have the problem. Also, I've tried changing the settings and that hasn't helped either.

I'm not going to bother with a ticket because I'm a free account so the Lindens won't pay it any attention. Which sort of is painful irony of posting this that I don't need pointed out.

Graphics card driver version: 7.15.11.6762 (Hope that's right)

I've also tried lowering my graphics card memory devoted to SL and that just made things worse

Also, a friend who has a computer with the same specs as mine, and I mean exact same specs, has told me that private sims have been causing her to crash like I have, but if she avoids private sims, she's fine, if that helps any.

Andromeda, the latest driver from Nvidia, http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us is Version: 182.08 Release Date: March 03, 2009 please try updating your driver and see if that helps with your issue.

Having this problem myself, I have found that staying in mainland sims seems to slow down the progression of the driver crash, but in a private sim, it being empty or a shop full of vendors, usually accelerates the problem to less then two minutes.

Seeing as I have the same computer as Andromeda, I've been helping her research the problem in-world since it started occuring. I've noticed that Windlight, or even just general SL settings make little to no differance in this problem, whether I put my computer up to ultra and custom it to be as much of a strain on the card, or put everything down as low as possible makes no differance.

Also, Like Andromeda, I can play any other game on full detail with absolutely no trouble at all, it's just SL..

That's all I can think of right now. If I come up with anything new I'll put some updates up here.

I'm going to attempt to do some research on whether logging into a private sim or teleporting in makes any differance at some point in the near future.

Thank you Ellla, I'll give that a try and see if it helps.

Abby, I was wondering when you were going to get involved with this.

I'll let you know if updating the driver helps.

Sorry for being such a pain...

Scanned my computer with the site's scannerjig thing, and it says that my driver is 167.62....
And wants me to update to 179.48, Febuary 11th....
Why is it saying different from what you've told me?
Doesn't seem right...

Version: 179.48
Release Date: February 11, 2009
Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit
Language: U.S. English
File Size: 122 MB

That's what it's telling me....So unless you have a direct link to this driver you're saying is the latest, I can't get it

If you have a notebook, 179.48 is the latest available for your Graphics card on the Nvidia site. It would be advisable to check with your computer manufacturer to see if they have a specially adapted driver.
