 Description  « Hide
Camera Operation: When I attempt to look at something up close in front of my avatar my camera automatically jumps behind my head as I try to move across the screen. It has been occurring since 1.19.5. It is very annoying and it makes it very difficult to view objects up close unless they are behind me. But when you are building its not very convenient to always be in front of the object that you are trying to view up close. I have disabled my camera constraints but it makes no difference. The operation is always the same.

Does this only happen when you are in Edit/Build mode? If so, do you have Edit->Preferences->Input & Camera->Automatic Edit Camera Movement enabled? If so, disabling it should fix the issue.

Thank you for the rapid response Harleen. In answer to your question:

I have never had Automatic Camera Edit Movement enabled.

The camera always jumps behind my head when I am using my camera controls to
move around when I am either shopping in a store; attempting to get up close
to read the printing on a sign or while I am in the build mode.

I hope this clarifies the issue.

LittleMichael, please try restoring your default settings, without reinstalling Second Life, by moving all of your existing settings files to a different, temporary directory. Next time Second Life starts, it will create a new, default set of settings files. Your settings files can be found in the following location:
  • On Windows: C:\Documents and Settings[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings
  • On Mac OSX: /Users/[YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/user_settings

If you still have an issue, please add some further information to this issue see JIRA issue posting guidelines - To submit a bug

5. Describe the computer environment in which the problem occurred. Copy & Paste your full computer environment, Help > About Second Life, including the Viewer you are using and the Region where you have this issue. Please also include the Graphics Card driver version.

6. Enter a detailed description of the issue, and be sure to include:

  • Steps (1,2,3...) to reliably reproduce the bug-- How to make the bug happen. If you cannot identify the specific steps, describe what seems to lead to the bug. Try to make this as simple as possible while still being specific enough to reproduce the bug. Simpler reproductions make it easier to narrow down the causes.
  • OBSERVED results (what happens when the bug occurs)
  • EXPECTED results (what behavior you would have expected instead)

For technical, time-sensitive and/or Region/Account specific issues please Submit a Ticket with Support as per JIRA Home page They will be able to give you help and advice.

Thank you : )

Please reopen [left sidebar] with further comment if you still have this issue.

I followed your instructions and renamed my Secondlife settings but it did not help because I still have the camera issue. I can not view any object that is in front of my avitar up close ... my camera always jumps behind my avatars head ... so I can not view the object all I can see is the back of my head.

My computer system is as follows: (copied from the Help Section)

I don't know how else I can explain the problem ... but it occurs everywhere and is not associated with any one area. It doesn't matter whether I am building or shopping in a store, a mall or an open field ... when I attempt to view an object that is in front of me ... my camera always jumps back behind my head when I move it to bring the object in view The only way I can view an object is to walk beyond it, and generally this is impossible if I am shopping and the article I am looking at or attempting to read is on the wall of a building or I am building a structure.

LittleMichael, please try completely uninstalling all Second Life Viewers, saving any chat logs, if you wish. How do I fully uninstall and reinstall Second Life?

Please make sure the Second Life Cache, User Settings and content of any Temporary folders are also deleted. Reboot your computer.

Then download the latest Viewer Second Life Version Number: 1.23.4.123908 from here Second Life® Installer, save the programme to your Desktop and install.

Log into Second Life and let your Inventory fully load.
