CoJo, using the latest RC Viewer which can be downloaded from here Release Candidate Test Viewers please see if you still have this issue with Catalyst 9.2.

Please add (copy & paste) your full computer environment, Help > About Second Life, including the Viewer you are using.

Before you restart Second Life, please attach your latest SecondLife log and CrashReport to this issue. This Knowledge Base article will tell you Where do I find my Second Life diagnostic logs?

Please see issue VWR-12056 Crash to desktop with RC Version Number: 1.21.6.99587. ATI catalyst 9.1

i found the fix: catalyst AI has to be set on normal. I had it set on advanced and it crashed.
this is on the linux system. i will test on win when i have some time.

edit: same solution with windows.

catalyst AI to NORMAL.

Please check to see what your Catalyst is set to.

Thank you : )

FROM VWR-12147 SL crashes on Vista with latest ATI drivers BlckCobra Shikami reports

Environment:
Vista SP1, ATI Radeon 4670, Catalyst Driver version 9.2 / 02/20/2009
ASUS/AMD 64 X2 5600+

Vista SP1 and new ATI drivers "9-2_vista32_dd_75976" crash SL reproducible (at least my ATI Radeon 4670).

Symptom:
SL crashes on startup or during login process or while you start typing your password.
No graphic setting (VBO on/off, Antialising etc) really produced a stable state.

Current Solution:
Reverting to the older drivers of 12/2008 (8-12_vista32_dd_72275) works.

Other people are reporting the same problem, for example here: http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=308544

Installed latest Cayalyst 9.2 drivers last night. All versions of SL now crash before I can even get to the login screen. Unbelievable. Will attempt to revert to last set of drivers that only crashed occasionally.

BlckCobra Shikami added a comment - 27/Feb/09 06:16 AM - edited
Additional Info: I have submitted a bug report to ATI/AMD via ATI support (SL is also in their application list) for their driver developer to check on this issue.

And yes, please keep this issue open (pretty bold to close it actually) - even if their is a kind of (crappy) workaround (downgrade to older driver version) this is still a serious issue and will become more serious soon when those drivers are shipped in the new ATI GraphicCard sales packages.

I had the same problem with 9.1 and 9.2 , turning off the advanced AI fixed SL (both 1.21 and 1.22)

Lac Boram added a comment - 05/Mar/09 05:35 AM
I too crashed on startup when ATI catalyst (v2009.0203.2228.40314)'s "AI" was enabled in the advanced settings (Radeon HD 4850).

Hi.

I was using Second Life 1.22.10 (112620) Feb 20 2009 17:25:43 (Second Life Release Candidate) with release 8.9 of ATI Catalyst drivers (OpenGL Version: 2.1.7873) for Windows Vista 64 bits and x1950 Graphics Card, with no major problems.

I upgraded to version 9.2 of ATI drivers (OpenGL Version: 2.1.8494) and the SL client started crashing after login command. I had to revert to version 8.9 of ATI drivers to get SL working again.

CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2211 MHz)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (Build 6001)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: Radeon X1950 Series
OpenGL Version: 2.1.7873 Release

I had the same problem with an ATI Radeon 4870 after installing the latest version 9.2 drivers

I found this work-around : In Catalyst Control Center, turn all 3D settings to default (click the default button).

This got SL working (not crashing on loading) but with a horridly slow 5-15 fps frame rate !

Go back and tick "Open GL Settings, Triple buffering.
This restored a reasonable frame rate, but still not as good as the previous drivers I had. This seems to be another issue. The performance of my 4870 graphics card is absolutely awful on SL with the latest drivers. I've talked to other people in world who are also having this other frame rate issue too.

I did roll back to my earlier ATI drivers, and SL was fine again with a good frame rate. However this isnt a solution just a 'fudge' and a fix needs to be found urgently now.

OS, Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP1
Direct X 10.0
Graphic card ATI Radeon HD 4870 (RV770), 512Mb memory

Running a 4850 on Windows Vista. Definitely crashes when I turn on Advanced Catalyst AI, but no problem on Standard. Work around for now is don't turn on advanced, and we'll see if 1.23 clears up this issue.

Zen Linden added a comment - 19/Mar/09 11:41 AM
I've notified ATI of the issue and it looks like 1.23 (unreleased) in it's current form may not fix it just yet. I've sent ATI the offending open gl call that crashes, and we'll see what they come back with. Till then, make sure Catalyst AI is set to Standard.

Ozymandias Zehetbauer added a comment - 19/Mar/09 06:54 PM
I can confirm that turning Advanced Catalyst AI off will allow SL to run with the Catayst 9.2 drivers. My frame rates range from "barely acceptable" to "slide show". I'll give the Open GL settings a try. I don't seem to crash quite as much with the current release candidate, so there may be some progress there.

Zen Linden added a comment - 20/Mar/09 10:22 AM
Talked to ATI. Looks like it was a problem in the driver of confusing accessing compressed textures vs. uncompressed textures and has been fixed internally by ATI, but probably will not go out by 9.3. 9.4 will most likely clear it up.

Radioactive Rosca added a comment - 20/Mar/09 11:50 AM
Hi again.

I confirm what Zen Linden wrote: ATI driver 9.3 (from 18 Mar) doesn't fix the problem and turning Catalyst AI to Standard is a goor work around.

Best regards.

Just loaded the 9.4 drivers...they are just awful IMHO, there are new bugs ! Going to be reloading 8.12 again soon if I can't find a fix for these new issues. Problems seen so far ;

1) Texture corruption in the form of lines from objects or lined / shaded triangular polygons eminating from objects and my Avatar.

2) At times slows to a 2 frame per second frame rate, even slower than version 9.2 was. This is just so disappointing.

The crash on startup bug appears to be fixed, but these new bugs that have appeared on my test also make SL unuseable IMHO.

Have now returned to 8.12 drivers and all is well again.

When will I ever learn?

I too, installed the Catalyst 9.4 drivers today. The horror.

It's like being on a bad acid trip. Strangely textured walls and objects flicker in and out of view. Walls and ceilings in buildings randomly disappear. Frame rates are back down to 'slide show' levels. But hey, I can now select 'Catalyst AI enabled, without crashing on startup. I guess this is progress, right?

Findhorn, thank you for your comment. At least I know I haven't lost my mind. I will also revert to an earlier Catalyst release after I get my blood pressure back down.

Ellla, are you sorry you asked for comments yet?

Update 5/2/09: Going back to catalyst 8.12 allows me to run SL.... for awhile. Eventually I will get a message, 'Display Driver has failed and recovered'. SL blacks out and locks up, forcing a relog.

Findhorn McLaglen added a comment - 11/Apr/09 04:44 AM - edited
Thanks Ozymandias, glad it wasnt just me / my PC alone and you've confirmed what I saw too. I'm particulary concerned about the reducing frame rate with each release since 8.12. On a card with the spec of the Radeon 4870 a 2fps frame rate should just not happen.

From what I've read the issue of textured "triangles" and lines flashing from Avatars and from objects started with Catalyst release 9.3, can anyone else confirm that or know a VWR number for it (if there is a related issue) ?

In my opinion each version release since Catalyst 8.12 has been a step backwards not forwards where SL is concerned.

Kafka Oh added a comment - 12/Apr/09 03:29 AM
I'm running Vista 32-Bit SP1, Dual Screens and one ATI 4850. Catalyst 9.4 currently. Latest RC and "normal" version of SL.

SL Crashes every time before the login screen comes up.
The strange thing is that ever since I got this card(not long ago, I used to run nVidia) I´ve been able to login to SL (without any problems) ONE TIME every gfx driver change. So 9.1 , 9.2, 9.3 ,9.4 . Four logins Though 9.4 drivers gave really tripped out polygon errors.

On my dualboot XP I seem to be login just fine with the drivers and don't get graphic glitches.

Just my 5 cents. And yes the graphic glitches do come from the avatars.

Is your Catalyst AI set to Standard ?

It is disappointing if the fix for this issue is not in the Catalyst 9.5, maybe it will be included when the official version is released.

Merci : )

No toggling of Catalist AI on a 3850 HD has any effect on this issue. I can't help but wonder if we still bark up the wrong tree. We'll see with 9.5. 9.4 was still current a week ago.

Still not out yet !

Waiting to give the Catalyst 9.5 drivers a try as this will be the final decider as to if I give up finally on this Radeon 4870 and go back to NVidia ! This problem has gone on for far too long.

Maybe the delay is them making sure they get all the SL bugs fixed this time....<sarcastic grin>

9.5 Drivers Released

Uninstalled 9.3 drivers completely
restarted PC
Installed 9.5 Drivers
Restarted PC
Registered Drivers with ATI
Checked ATI settings, Basic AI set
tested SL loaded fine
Logged Out of SL
Went into ATI settings changed to Advanced AI
Logged into SL, gets as far as loading world
CRASHED!

step by step guide for ATI Users lol

Oh and those triangles are still present with this release also

Ozymandias Zehetbauer added a comment - 25/May/09 05:46 PM
Confirmed: with Catalyst 9.5 the hallucinogenic triangles are back with a vengeance. Frame rates have plummeted to 30 -40 frames per MINUTE.

I've had my HD4870 for nearly a year now. Gone through nine (not counting betas) Catalyst releases, each one worse than the previous load. And I'm sure Zen will receive assurances any day now that the fix will be in version 9.6.

Gonna go shop for a GeForce 275 now.

Findhorn McLaglen added a comment - 25/May/09 11:47 PM
Thanks for your efforts and the information Zen, it is very much appreciated

Personally like Ozymandias, I couldnt wait for one or two more revisions (in other words one-two months longer) for a solution and be able to participate in Second Life without these seriously limiting issues. I solved my problem by scrapping the Radeon 4870, going back to Nvidia and fitting a GTX260 series card a few days ago. No log-in issues, triangles or ludicrously slow frame rates when moving around any more.

Despite this, I hope this bug gets fixed soon and many others are not in a position to adopt my solution.

However, Linden Labs must realise that people expect solutions to problems in days, not months. In business and industry they expect them in hours. How many people since February have tried SL for the first time, seen the poor pereformance and triangles and just walked away ? Its your business guys !

UPDATE FOR MY ISSUES. Radeon HD 2600 XT - I actually sent the card back as per the manufacturers (HIS) request, and my place of purchase would only replace with the same card. I though Well .maybe!!! NO SUCH LUCK.. There is already a hotfix out for the Catalyst 9.5. Installed everything again and trued disabling the A.I. also setting it to standard... and reducing everything I could find in the advanced menu,, I still only gdt as far as the VFS splash screen during loading of SL and the screen goes black then comes back ,, again that is it. Try to restart SL and An attempt to send a crash report fails as it cannot connect to the server. (crash log attached) I even tried the Second_Life_1-23-3-122255_Release_Candidate_Setup.exe

My Ticket Information at VWR-13559

My Log files are attached at the top of this ticket.

Below is from My Ticket That was UMMMM Closed as RESOLVED!!!!

> I also Saw that the Radeon 2600 was a recommended card so I installed the Radeon HD 2600 XT AGP 512 MB and bought a 25" I-INC LDC 1080p Monitor, and a 550 watt powersupply, thinking this would greatly improve my SL experience. I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I am. When I try to open SL I get the pop up of VFS then the screen goes black for a second and I am then returned to my desk top. Windows Task manager shows That SL loaded then a few seconds later it disappears from the processes window. I am using SL 1.22.11 (113941) Also, ATI catalyst 9.4 with the hotfix .I contacted AMD and this was their response "The error message you describe is from the Game. Please contact the Game Manufacturer for information regarding this error."

> I was using a Nvidia GeForce TI 4100 with no problems at all (other than only 128mb of memory and reduced graphics).
> I also Use a Laptop with a Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS /PCI/SSE2 wit Vista SP1 that runs very well except it tends to overheat and freeze the entire PC, however if I keep it cool it runs just fine.

Ragzz, please run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

XP: Click on the Start button and select Run. In the Open text box. Enter "dxdiag" and click OK > Save All Information. Please attach the text file to this issue.

Please try completely uninstalling all Second Life Viewers, saving any chat logs, if you wish. How do I fully uninstall and reinstall Second Life? Reboot your computer.

Then download a new copy of the latest RC Viewer Second Life 1.23.4 (123523) Jun 9 2009 08:32:14 (Second Life Release Candidate) which can be downloaded from here Release Candidate Test Viewers, save the programme to your Desktop and install.

Then log into Second Life and let your Inventory fully load.

If you originally had a Nvidia Graphics Card and have now changed it to an ATI card, there maybe some corruption in the installation of the new drivers. Please check with your computer manufacturer for their help and advice re 3rd party driver cleaning programmes.

For a further response tailored to your individual situation please reopen your Ticket with Support see JIRA Home page

Thank you : )

Please recheck with your Graphics Card manufacturer for the correct drivers for your Card and any specific installation instructions they have.

Thank you : )

Thanks again for you quick attention to my problem, You are Great...

I did not install the card manufacturers software as i tried with the first card and it did not work. I am going to uninstall the hotfix for the Catalyst 9.5, and try to install the manufacturers software. I believe it will fail as it has with the first card. it could not find the driver. igif it fails i will not uninstall anything I will reinstall thehot fix... Thanks again

That was of no help. I will try to contact ATI and HIS (the card manufacturer) and see if they can help, last time ATI blew me off and said it was your SL problem. and the card manufacturer told me to return the card which I did...

Got home from work today, logged in, and discovered that ATI had released Catalyst 9.6 and Linden had released viewer version 1.23.4.123908 on the same day. Figuring that this couldn't be coincidence, that there must be some cosmic meaning behind the timing, I upgraded to the latest. With breathless anticipation (or was it morbid curiousity?), I logged in to SL and...

Triangles out the wazoo. Phantom walls flickering in and out of view. Frame rates may be a little better, but not good enough. This is now the fourteenth revision of Catalyst that I've tried in the space of ten months.

But I'm not bothered - for a lovely green and black box containing an ASUS GeForce 275 arrived over the weekend. Good riddance to Red. Zen, thank you for the effort to resolve this issue. Linden Labs, please heed Findhorn's words from May 25.

Happened to me after upgrading from 7 something to 9.3, in both 1.22 and 1.23. Turning off Catalyst A.I. fixed it, and I don't crash anymore.

System:
Windows XP SP3
Graphics Card: Mobility Radeon x1600 PCI Express

Thanks for the comment Catten, I have tried that as well as everything anyone would suggest. I wonder if it just involves the agp slot cards. but ATI made no mention of that.

I've reached the stage where I don't even bother with the new ATI drivers now. I see if it fixes these issues, and when it doesn't, I keep the 8.12 drivers.

The downside is, for all other purposes I like my ATI card - it's fast, delivers superb colour reproduction, and has a hefty 1 Gig memory on board. So I have two choices:

1. Dump SL
or
2. Dump all the advantages I have with this card and pay over the odds for a green box.

Alternatively, perhaps LL and ATI could talk a little more closely and fix this once and for all.

Ozymandias Zehetbauer added a comment - 22/Jun/09 03:56 PM
Roken, beware.

SL does not recognize my shiny new video card (ref. #VWR-14205). Linden Lab Support informed me today that the GeForce 275 is "too new to the market" and "we have yet to develop the appropriate software to work with your graphics card". Resolution to the problem: "perhaps switching back to an older card may assist".

Findhorn McLaglen added a comment - 22/Jun/09 06:09 PM
I know SL works with the Nvidia GTX 260 cards, I have one now working on Vista 64 bit and it works very well indeed.

I was thinking about getting the GTX 275, glad I didnt now. Typical of SL to be lagging behind and giving unhelpful advice.

Yet another Update.......... The following id from AMD Tech. Support. After running the "Driver Cleaner" and removing the Nvidia drivers that were left behind from the uninstall My HIS ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card began to work. I have tried several settings and even the AI enabled allows the card to work. The graphics are better than the Nvidia GeForce TI 4100 It is no where near what I had hoped for. The movement is jumpy and slow but Hey at least it works. I plan on removing all the drivers including the Catalyst 9.6 hotfix and doing a reinstall to see if this corrects the problem. I hope that the information below may be of help tosome others.. Let me know it it helps you........ Ragzz Baxton

By the way the link to the "Driver Sweeper" took me to the "DRiver CLeaner" as well.

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200211284]} has been reviewed and updated.

Response and Service Request History:

This driver is provided as is and is not supported by AMD. It has not completed full AMD testing, and is only recommended for users experiencing the particular issue described above.

Try other applications to determine if you need to trouble shoot the card and the system. Below are the complete steps from un-installing to all the way to replace the card. If other applications do not reproduce the same problem, then more likely that trouble shooting the application has a greater probability to resolve the issue.

If you are indeed bug reporting please report the bug to the developer, as fixes may come in a game patch or a driver update.

If you would like to report any bugs to the driver team you may by visiting our website at:

http://www.amdsurveys.com/se.ashx?s=5A1E27D27E29B0E3

Generic trouble shooting steps for the card.

The first step would be to clean out all aspects of ATI from your system. An attached document will guide you on how to remove the ATI files and folder from the system.

The step will try to eliminate any files left from an old install that may be causing the new install to fail.

Removing previous drivers from the system,

Please also ensure that you remove any old display drivers from the system to try to eliminate. This will ensure that the operating system is not confused about what driver to use.

Good third party utilities would be:

Driver Cleaner:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=1655&file=4&evp=c14f9f3787877eef9ef4b235b9146e96

Driver Sweeper:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655

Please note that this is a third party utility and has no affiliation with AMD.

The next step in trouble shooting software is communication break down between the motherboard and the video card.

Update both the bios and the chipset on the motherboard to ensure proper communication between the two chips.

The north bridge chip on the motherboard which is called the 'Chipset' may be located in your motherboards manual. Try to identify the chipset and update this driver to the latest driver. Please do use the manufactures driver and not the driver provided by Microsoft.

Verify the date in device manager the listing should be under Device manager in the System device's section.

There you should be able to locate the PCI-Express entry or AGP entry if this is an AGP motherboard.

This will ensure that communication flow from the video card to the motherboard is responding correctly.

After installation reboot and test again.

If the test fails we are still working with software trouble shooting, the next thing to eliminate would be any running background processes from the system.

In your task manager should list your running processes underneath the processes tab.

The number of processes running on a fresh install of Windows is around 17 processes.

Try to narrow your software configuration to where you're only running the hardware, the application you are using. You may visit www.processlibrary.com to try to identify the non essential processes. Remove these processes and try to bring the number down to just the operating system. Test the application, if this fails you are left with just the operating system and the hardware to trouble shoot.

To try to eliminate Windows causing a problem you may either reformat the system, or install a second hard drive with a fresh copy or Windows, install the motherboards drivers first and then the video card. Try to test the application, should this fail then you would be looking at hardware causing the problem.

You may then http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/737-19285WarrantyServiceRequest.aspx or exchange the product at the point of purchase. If this is a partner produced board like Sapphire, Asus, Visiontek or TUL, ECT then warranty service will be provided by them directly.

A second card would rule out the card is not defective. You may also test the card in a different system to see if the problem follows the card.

Those are the complete steps to trouble shoot the video card.

Just an update. I've been running with the Catalyst 9.7 beta drivers for the last week or so - and had no problems. Catalyst AI set to advanced. Still have to turn off open GL vertex buffers off though, otherwise I still get those damn triangles.

Sephy McCaw added a comment - 23/Jul/09 12:24 AM
I do believe this is now resolved, ATI 9.7 drivers released as of last night, advanced set logged in fine and OpenGL vertex buffers are also enabled

Ragzz Baxton added a comment - 23/Jul/09 03:50 PM
Does anyone know if this will work with the AGP cards? I have had to use the hotfix versions to even get my HIS ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card to even work. It may be too soon for the hot fix, but it never hurts to ask so I have been told.

Roken Price added a comment - 23/Jul/09 06:29 PM
I can confirm that 9.7 seems to have cured both login and triangles problems here - AI on max and buffers enabled.
