Running a 4850 on Windows Vista. Definitely crashes when I turn on Advanced Catalyst AI, but no problem on Standard. Work around for now is don't turn on advanced, and we'll see if 1.23 clears up this issue.

Zen Linden added a comment - 19/Mar/09 11:41 AM
I've notified ATI of the issue and it looks like 1.23 (unreleased) in it's current form may not fix it just yet. I've sent ATI the offending open gl call that crashes, and we'll see what they come back with. Till then, make sure Catalyst AI is set to Standard.

Talked to ATI. Looks like it was a problem in the driver of confusing accessing compressed textures vs. uncompressed textures and has been fixed internally by ATI, but probably will not go out by 9.3. 9.4 will most likely clear it up.

Boy Lane added a comment - 02/Apr/09 05:38 AM
Edited to include all Catalyst 7.12 to current 9.3. All these problems are likely related to ATi's OpenGL implementation that changed with release 7.12. There are 3rd party drivers (DNA Drivers, http://www.donotargue.com) that backport OpenGL to 7.11 that work, although not with later, in the old version unsupported, ATi cards (HD xxxx).

Just installed 9.4 and have tried turning on Advanced Catalyst A.I. It still crashes at start up... is anyone able to confirm this is what happens, the ugly font rendering does not seem to have gone away with this release either

I get the triangles intermittently, disenabling VBO ends the problem. Catalyst is set to Standard. I disabled Catalyst AI and reenabled VBO in SL prefs, the distortion started immediately. Unenabling it stopped the distortion immediately. CPU is AMD 64 x2

I just noticed ATI released a new Catalyst driver today, I will test this out directly!

Display Driver
ATI Catalystâ„¢ 9.6 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

After testing I will report my findings, please do NOT test this out your self. If my Pc gets messed up more, then it is just 1 PC instead of yours as well.

Getting a "VPURECOVER" Crash warning. This happens when the Hardware doesn't respond to the driver anymore when i try to start the Viewer. This happend on the 1.22.11 as well as on 1.23.4 RC and 1.23.4 (123908).

Rainbow Viewer from Boylane doesn't even start up after my tries.

Problems still unresolved.

After i got the 1.22.11 and 1.22.4 running i am still getting the poor framerates.

Triangles with VBO enabled still appear.

FSAA and Anisotropic Filtering isn't really applyable as this seems to increase the chance of getting the VPURECOVER Crash.

After completely uninstalling the 9.5 Catalyst drivers with "Driver Cleaner PE" and a couple of restarts i finally can at least play again.

9.7 drivers released

advanced set in graphic options, OpenGL buffer enabled... (still abit jaggy when walking) but other then that i'd say get em while they're hot

There are already beta drivers out, Catalyst 9.8, which I am using right now.

This has been the first time since Catalyst 8.12 that I've been able to login to SL while having
CATALYST AI enabled and set to Advanced.

Also, this Catalyst beta 9.8 release does not have the flickering textures issue anymore, so no weird
triangles floating around any more.

Enabling VBO still manages to bring down the machine to a crawl, though. Best leave it disabled.

Get the Catalyst 9.8 beta driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7 here:

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost.php?p=1335957212&postcount=3

Mind you, htese drivers are still in BETA! If you are uncomfortable with BETA drivers please use ATI official drivers like
the officially released Catalyst 9.7 drivers:

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Sephy McCaw added a comment - 24/Jul/09 01:53 AM
issues do not affect 9.7 in my eyes, i do believe these issues stopped at 9.6,

Beta Drivers are not a good source to see if things are fixed

The good news: YES, OPENGL VERTEX BUFFER OBJECTS WORK! FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY! No more spastic triangles covering up the screen.

The bad news? sigh I can no longer run SL in windowed mode and switch to another application, as soon as SL isn't the active window anymore it freezes up and sits there until I kill the process. Since I rely on being able to multitask (and I'm not gonna keep switching between my desktop and SL-in-fullscreen-mode tyvm), this makes 9.7 useless for me atm. Back to 9.3 for me, which was the last time I updated my drivers...

But as far as SL slowing down with OpenGL VBO enabled goes, I can't agree with that. As long as I kept my SL window focused and active, things kept going smoother than ever. It's not necessarily faster, but stuttering is a LOT less with VBO on.

That's been my L$2!

(PS: I don't bother with the bloated CCC, I only install the drivers and run ATI Tray Tools to config everything...I keep the A.I. off too)

Korbin Riva added a comment - 20/Sep/09 03:19 AM
I still have the VBO crash with 9.8 drivers. Does anyone have a step-by-step on how to get this working under the HD3650 AGP?
I would also add that fog does not work properly, but this is covered under another JIRA and not necessarily linked to the HD cards.

BTW the HD cards are not "old and unsupported". The 4000 series were still being released this year, for example, and the 3000 series is only 1.5-2 years old. (depending on model and manufacturer) If ATI is no longer supporting them then that's a shame, but the vendors (Sapphire/VisionTek etc.) are definitely still selling and support them.
