 Description  « Hide
Viewer crashes when attempting to load while running Catalyst 9.1 drivers.

Closed the viewer to update drivers, discovered that SL will not load. I've had three times where the viewer crashed so far. The first was on load--it didn't even get as far as displaying a black background in the window. The second was after the UI had loaded (login and menu were loaded), but it crashed just before loading in the background image and info text. The third was while attempting to login (I was only able to get this far twice). Halfway through the login process, it crashed.

All crashes were basic crash-to-desktop with no error information given.

Eiagra, please see the comment on VWR-8014 from Rinja Vella - 03/Feb/09 03:05 PM

Hi, i had the same crashes on every login with my HD4850, but found a solution / workaround:
In ATI Catalyst Control Center go to 3d settings and switch off adaptive anti-aliasing. SL is running fine for me since.
Im not sure if its working for everyone, but it might help tech stuff catching this bug

Please run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to check that the new drivers installed correctly Vista: Click Start > (in start search) Type dxdiag > Click on the programme > Save All Information.

If this is still an issue please post a Ticket with Support for account-specific help

Adaptive anti-aliasing was already turned off (I generally leave off all anti-aliasing, since a higher screen res is a more efficient use of GPU power).

DXDIAG (both 32-bit and 64-bit) report no problems with the driver.

Crashes on me, too, on Win XP Pro SP3 during "initialising multimedia", progressbar exactly at 50%.

This is the second time I am having this issue.

The problem is when I start Second Life, it crashes after 2 or 3 seconds, and I don't even have time to go to My Prefereces to deactivate Voice. I really do not know what to do, please help me get into Second Life, thanks!

I am not quick enough to take a screenshot of the bug, sorry.

I also put the version precede which is version 8.9 of ATI Catalyst then that always made the same problem.

Then I have a rather large machine here:

  • Turn: Orange X-Blade
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo (E8500) 3.16 Ghz, FSB 1.333 Ghz, memory hiding place L2 = 6 Mo and with the technology of the 45 Nanomème (Booster rocket with 3.8 Ghz)
  • Mother chart: ASUS P5K-E WIFI/AP
  • Memory food (RAM): OCZ Performance DDR2 800 MHz, (2x 1024 Dual Mo Dual Chanel)

Disabling Catalyst AI fixed this for me with ATI 9.2 and Vista 64.

Running a 4850 on Windows Vista. Definitely crashes when I turn on Advanced Catalyst AI, but no problem on Standard. Work around for now is don't turn on advanced, and we'll see if 1.23 clears up this issue.

Zen Linden added a comment - 19/Mar/09 11:41 AM
I've notified ATI of the issue and it looks like 1.23 (unreleased) in it's current form may not fix it just yet. I've sent ATI the offending open gl call that crashes, and we'll see what they come back with. Till then, make sure Catalyst AI is set to Standard.

Talked to ATI. Looks like it was a problem in the driver of confusing accessing compressed textures vs. uncompressed textures and has been fixed internally by ATI, but probably will not go out by 9.3. 9.4 will most likely clear it up.

Ellla McMahon added a comment - 09/Apr/09 01:47 PM
ATI have released Catalyst 9.4 (4/8/2009). Please test the new drivers and add a comment.

Thank you : )

Findhorn McLaglen added a comment - 12/Apr/09 05:38 AM
Tried Catalyst 9.4 drivers on 11/04, They are just awful IMHO. No crashes on loading but there are new texture bugs and an even slower frame rate that makes SL unplayable. See my comments on VWR-12139 regarding this. Gone back to Catalyst 8.12 again which is OK.

Roken Price added a comment - 19/Apr/09 02:18 AM
I agree re 9.4. The worst drivers to date, introducing several problems rather than fixing any. I, too, have reverted to 8.12 now.
