those of you who own a macro sized AV of any type for the most part should hopefully able to see just how usefull this feature could be, especially large (as in 10M+ and above tall avatars, some robo/mechs most notably) ones.
i know implementation of this feature could be hesitant on the part of LL possibly, because it's similar to the (now defunct) LL scripting capabilities to reshape the AV skin permanently, BUT, that's not what this issue is asking for, it would meet the same goal of being able to permanently modify a specific avatar skin to a usefull shape.
the difference here would be in how that should be done, before the AV skin modifying code was removed from functional LSL scripting capabilities it was used maliciously in the form of gestures and other assorted malicious objects.
however, if instead the avatar mesh would have to be imported from an external program (uploaded as a special attachment type basically) that could allow someone who had use for it to take the mesh on and off at will as is with clothing and other attachment types, if the mesh item is in a "worn" state, it would replace or reshape the current standard mesh in use by the avatar so long as it stayed "worn" while also easily being removable so to be sure that the custom mesh could not be used for griefing or other malicious purposes.
the mesh would behave like clothes as started before, non rezzable in world except while worn by an avatar and with no possibility to contain custom animations/scripts.
depending on feasability this could also aid in the phasing out of ugly invisible scripted prims that create graphical anomalies.
Yes, I think it could be done. It's a question of if Linden Labs is willing to go through the effort for their users or not.
