Like some other issues, when I started in SL, I actually expected the lightness of a texture could be used as bumpmap. And indeed to have the bumpiness an adjustment slider as well. Right now, it usually has far too much contrast.
Voted...I'd settle at the least for just the ability to add new bumpmaps. I know a number of people I've talked to but may not browse the JIRA often would love to see this.
Definitely something I've been waiting for, perhaps forcing the texture to be only gray scale to keep the memory costs down?
Would it be possible to incorporate a bump map in a texture, as opposed to the global bump maps we have now that you select in the drop down box? In the Sims 2 you can add a bump map as a layer in a texture. You can do things like make buttons shiny and make the edges of a garment seem slightly elevated from the skin. This would be great for making non-prim clothes more realistic.
