 Description  « Hide
Unless it is explicitly turned off, SLI and presumably Crossfire turn on when Second Life is activated. SLI DRAMATICALLY improves SL performance, nearly doubling it at times. On my system it jumped from a jumpy 15-25fps to a silky smooth 40-45fps. That provided a MUCH more enjoyable experience.

HOWEVER, SL crashes in a matter of minutes. That makes it useless.

Since this is a 3D application. Since many people using 3D entertainment have multiple video cards.

Second Life should support SLI and Crossfire.

I reccommend this bug be closed on the grounds this is a driver issue, not an SL issue. AFAICT, SLI doesn't support OpenGL.

"SLI technology can be enabled for every gaming application, including both OpenGL and Direct3D gaming applications."

Why a feature rather than a meta-issue? Multiple GPU setups are getting to be de rigour for 3D gaming setups. Not supporting it maybe a feature however it also is an ability whose absence makes SL a second class 3D application.

Moreover, the people who have SLI/Crossfire are also the one who have money to spend playing.

It just seemed to me that this issue wasn't likely to have a cloud of sub-issues, and thus was kind of an atomic feature: either you support SLI or you don't.

from the guidelines:

Meta Issue: Describes a general category of problems rather than a specific problem

New Feature: A new feature of the product, which has yet to be developed

I don't feel strongly about it. I certainly didn't mark it "new feature" because I don't think it is worth doing. Voted.

It is both SLI and Crossfire and affects the positions of Second Life in the 3D Virtual World. Support for SLI/Crossfire will be necessary to support games. Also, SL's differentiator is its 3D affects. To maintain those affects...to run on Ultra with 16x AA on a 1980x1080 monitor/TV you NEED SLI or Crossfire. And that doesn't mean multiple physical cards, both are offered with two GPUs on a single card, or a desktop, laptops are now available, or high end (both are available as hybrids using a mid-range graphics card with the on-board graphics on some Nvidia or AMD chipsets.

Meta-issues do not work this way (they're used more for broad categories of symptoms, like "meta-issue: lag" or "meta-issue: inventory loss", or other categories). They're also nearly impossible to finish...

Lets put this into "Meta-issue: Improve Performance!"

Changed the title to better reflect the description...

Then it is a bug...I'm fine with a bug if it is supposed to be there.

Ok we need to Organize this Pile of SLI stuff renaming and such, We already have a feature request for SLI support so please vote on VWR-7964 for it. This can describe the crashing bug, but we need your debug logs, http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Debug_Help will let you know how to find them.

Sounds like you're overclocking to me. Advise you just do-away with your multiple cards and get a single one with Dual SLI enabling.

Can you please attach copies of your crash logs?

Milton Wisent added a comment - 15/Jan/09 01:44 PM
How could it be resolved? I just saw your post a few minutes ago.

Where are the crash logs located?
