Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-18039

 Description  « Hide
When a user chooses to IM another person, as soon as the IM window is opened it should display the recipient's MOTD text that they will have entered in their preferences.

The text should be able to include http:// links that would open up a browser and could be used for FAQ pages etc.

It is essential that the MOTD appears before any messages are sent by the user. [Edit]It should display the MOTD regardless of whether the recipient is online or not.[/Edit] The idea is to reduce the massive number of IMs that come through to individuals, also known as "IM Storms".

Example use cases:

A person with a great deal of SL customers all asking the same questions: sets their MOTD to "Thank you for your interest in our products, if you are about to ask a question it is most likely answered already in our FAQ: http://www.example.com/faq.html. Please check that before sending any messages. Questions that are answered in the FAQ will not be answered via IM. Thank you."

A Linden Lab employee: "Hi, I am responsible for facilitating communications with open source developers. If you need some other kind of help from a Linden, please visit this page to directly contact a more appropriate member of staff: http://www.example.com/contacts_and_roles.html"

An RL business manager: "Please direct all queries via Joe Bloggs or Jane Bloggs as I am currently away on holiday. You can also contact us in other ways by viewing our contacts page: http://www.example.com/contacts.html"

An estate manager: "My hours of duty are from 18:00 to 21:00 PDT. For help outside these hours, contact Joe Bloggs"

Wow, good idea! :-D I'm voting for this!. I get tons of messages about sim management in Leviathan and Evolve (Teen Grid) that are already answered in the FAQ in my TSL Wiki '_ (how obvious), and this would do it much easier instead of implementing a LibSL bot between the coms.

I was earlier testing a Lifehacker Gmail workaround to make something similar happen if someone IMed me offline:

but that more applies to if someone already IMs me. Sounds like this issue is more preemptive, e.g., how Live Help/Help Request used to show lines of info-text when you first opened the window.

I agree this is a great idea for Lindens and Residents alike, and I think there's an internal issue that's similar (not the same, but close enough). If I find it I'll link it up.

Super to see all the votes here thus far.

This is a superb idea! I can see this being helpful in many business and communications issues.
Got my vote.

So, this would be a greeting they get. Only when the recipient is offline, tho?

I agree it would be a nice feature. The rest of us could use it as a vacation message, for instance.

This would be great, for those times when people can't seem to read my profile, my picks, my web tab, or even the extensive documentation that comes with my products. For statistical purposes, I'd wager that at least 95% of people can't be bothered to read any of the above before IMing me, and that makes it even more frustrating because most of them are incorrectly IMing me about someone else's product. Maybe plastering text into their IM window pre-emptively might help.

should i create a separate entrey on jira to ask for somthiung like t that, but for groups? (also, it would be great if it could be changed by script)

ps:if possible, email me your answer instead of just posting here since I haven't found a way to get notiifcations about stuff here directly on my email (I don't want to have to subscribe to a rss feed or somthing like that)

Great idea!

I would love this. No longer would I have to reply "sorry, you need to contact _____" to many of the IMs I get every day.
They could be automatically directed to the right person, saving us both time!

This would be hugely helpful for customer service! Please implement.

I like this idea, and it's really simple too. One way it could be expanded is to the turn the message into a floater window with an "I Agree" button, but that might be overkill.

So, sort of a freetext answering machine for your avatar? cool.

stevenSDF Fisher added a comment - 29/Aug/08 02:33 PM
Yes, I guess putting it as an answering machine message would be a good way of thinking of it. However, it happens whether on-line or not and on opening an IM console before any message is sent.

I wonder what impact this could have on the database though, one query for every opened IM console?

more than one year and nothing happen.. nice! :/

Timeless Prototype added a comment - 15/Sep/08 11:25 PM
I still long for this feature. I do like the idea of a text answering service, Erica.

It needs to work both whilst I'm online and offline.

If I had this answering service I'd log in more often and make more stuff! I dread the IM storms so I just don't log in that often anymore.

Would be a nice feature to make premium accounts more attractive. Linked to MISC-763

Another six or more months passed an no resolution sigh Well, hopefully they add this feature along with more groups and picks.

Am telling several of my friends about this. They want this feature as well and should be happy to vote on it.
