It seems this was removed some time ago. Adding 1.21 to affected versions.
"Those who cannot remember the bugs are condemned to repeat them."
I regret ignoring this when I first noticed it. This is a HUGE issue. And the hippo can not be wiped out by LL.
This is regression. You can not remove this wonderful feature. Though the comments and the report is done in a humorous manner. Everyone is dead serious about this. I, too, regret not saying anything when I noticed. This was truly a blow to me and, I'm sure, many others.
It's more than a funny-silly Easter egg - it is our history and our continuity at stake here. As everyone in Second Life knows (or should), hippopotamuses are the most important creature EVAH and have always been cherished and protected, enjoyed, and loved. Hippos give an SLer a warm and happy glow. Hippos go back to beta. Hippos have always been symbolic of the playful relationship between LL and us. If the playful relationship has evaporated we get joint custody of the hippos and want our control-alt-shift-H back. Please bring the hippos back! As a friend to many hippos in SL this is a travesty!
Won't somebody please think of the hippos?
Save the Hippos!
SL's little jokes and quirks are a big part of the SL experience and add to the feeling of community. Don't let the Hippos die. This is an issue that calls for public demonstrations.
I say, "Give me Hippos or give me Death!"* *Death here being defined as a forcible teleport to one's Home location. Not that other Death. You know, the one voiced by Adam Carolla on The Family Guy.
I am really PETH'd off that the hippos are gone...return them forthwith...or the residents will be revolting....and many of them are already revolting enough!
Bring back the Hippos!!
I will vote for this issue if we can also add a provision that Linden Lab stop offering grandfathered tier on class 5 sims across sim transfers. It's not pork, it's hippos.
Hippos are a neccisary part of the SecondLife ecosystem- if they're removed, the whole thing might collapse!
i believe the problem is that we're running low on hippos, and so we try to use them very sparingly.
Just doing away with them without a referendum was unhippocratic.
Let's put all of our cards on the table. Lindens hold out on the hippos and we start holding out on the cookies!!!!
Don't forget to blog about this outrage! http://secondslog.blogspot.com/2009/02/save-hippos.html
Marianne McCann, may I have your permission to use the hippo picture you posted? I would like to put a sign in my club and to also pass it to other club and business owners.
I noticed this was missing from the client a while back and was truly upset! Not only is it part of our communal history, it was useful and fun in conversations!
Please, seriously, put it back into the client for future generations to appreciate and express their love of the noble Hippo. Sign me, Hippo Lover Lovelorn in Lo Lo @axe bikcin Be my guest! There is also a box of related goodies (t-shirt, sign, and hippo) in my You Know, For Kids! store in Bay City - Imaginaro, and at the Forum Cartel Hangout in Allana
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bay%20City%20-%20Imaginario/11/215/25 The removal of the hippos has broken my teleporters and cost me a lot of business, they hippos must be returned for the good of all SL. Darling Brody ps. Those people interested in forming a class action to sue Linden Labs for the emotional pain of losing our hippos should contact me in world. As soon as I noticed this, I remember searching the web for the missing libHippo package!
Soruceforge net? no. In dire search for the lost hippos, I even wrote a letter to GNU, but they sadly informed me that the hippo isn't the animal of their choice as a mascot, and that they prefer to fully focus on the feeding and care of their current one, so couldn't supply me with the advanced 'hippos!' rendering library I so direly wanted. Bring this back! Nice to see that the tracker has lost all meaning even to the Lindens when Soft comes along and openly says that it's okay to post jokey spam on the JIRA and that they not only won't do anything about it but will openly encourage it. I guess that proves how seriously they take the tracker internally at LL and how serious they are about actually using it productively themselves, not to mention how serious they are about helping those of us who actually use it for mature and useful uses use it.
@Qarl Linden - At some expense (at least L$10!) I managed to capture a photo of one of the hidden Hippo preserves (see above), which seems to show that there is a sizable number of hippos hidden away. These poor animals are waiting for the day they can hear the rallying cry of "Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H" yet again.
Gordon:
Good to see that you weren't born with a funny bone in your body. Of course the logic of LL not wanting to help with any issues because of a JIRA like this shall make sense to me one day. Someday. It doesn't right now, but it sure sounds like a frustrated strawman argument. So I suggest just letting people have their fun here and gather votes for this, while you go back to Serious Business in another issue, mh? :> The hippos will thank you for it. Please, think of the hippos. Why isn't this showstopper again? Seriously, this blows my mind that there could be a more important issue than this. I've seen less severe exploits!
This needs immediate patching. To this end I am telling everyone I know and many people I don't about this critical issue. Edit: I accidentally the whole sentence. I want the hippos back! >: P
Only to be appreciated by those old enough to know Gayle Peevey:
I want a hippopotamus, you Lindens! I want a hippopotamus, you Lindens! I can see me now, the deed then done, I want a hippopotamus, you Lindens! This is an Outrage!
Bring back the hippos! I don't want to have to speak to you about this again. NSG How can we concentrate on hippos when there are UNASSIGNED SHOWSTOPPING BUGS!??!!!?11!!!
Linking. Because it's really super important. I am shocked and dismayed by the Linden's totalitarian fascism toward the happy and liberal hippo population. Do our leaders think that censorship can stem the joy of hippos from being diseminated throughout the populace? Do they consider their own position against the peace loving and friendly hippos so weak that it cannot withstand debate, therefore rendering this 'disappearing' the only course of action?
The bugle has sounded, my friends. This alacratic call to arms sounds deep within the now opensource souls of us all, first they take our hippos, what next - who will protect us when they come to attack that which is most sacred, our very right to dream. Onward, to arms my brothers! Let not the Hippoless minions defeat your hearts, for our cause is just and our aims are true! Prim drift, we endure, borked asset servers we can stand, but when they take our hippos, they must learn, together as one people, with one heart and one voice, our war cry must be "NO!" This message was brought to you by the peoples hippo liberation front, some indians may believe. (disclaimer: this message was not brought to you by the peoples hippo liberation front.) Which Linden is responsible for removing this? I wanna know so we can form a posse and build a hippo-henge around his or her office. Suzanne is right, we must protest, we must be heard, we must get 1,000 votes!
FYi:, according to http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Hippo
Please! They're holding me hostage! They'll trample me if they aren't reinstated, I'm sure of it! Or maybe just breathe on me - you have no idea how bad hippo breath can be!!1!
All available staff need to be pulled to resolve this critical issue.
"If this gets 1,000 votes, I will submit a fix to maint-viewer that very day."
How can we put a price on the majestic hippo? :'( @Oh - it doesn't count as a community if they're all you
They are not all him
"If this gets 1,000 votes, I will submit a fix to maint-viewer that very day." ? How can you pluck this number from the air for such an important issue. 600 plus.. is that not enough? As long as it is back by Febuary 15th all is well as far as I am concerned. It's too bad it won't be in a live viewer by then though.
I am dragging my old, tired Avatar out of retirement to help Save the Hippos!
If you bring back the Hippos, all my base can be yours. If you do not, I will cry. "A regular army of hippopotami
All singing this haunting refrain .. Mud, mud, glorious mud Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood So follow me follow, down to the hollow And there let us wallow in glorious mud" Hippos are fun, cute, and can dance like nobody's business.
When I use my underpowered laptop I have to use SL version 1.18 and every time I log on, there are hippos waiting for me in my friends list. Hippos are part of SecondLife. They should not be forgotten. Have you hugged your hippo today? Hippos are an undeniable icon of SL's past.. As a sort of "injoke mascot", the hippo has always been a revered part of SL. There are statues of hippos, people who never would have, have incorporated hippos into their brands.. It's like Clarus the Dogcow, or the Llama in various software development circles.. The Hippo has become synonymous with "the whimsy that once was" in Second Life, and the removal of this easter-egg, however pointless it may be.. is tantamount to saying "whimsy is dead", or that the programmers are now all white shirts who are only there for their 40 hours and a paycheck.
Please reinstate this easter-egg. This is an early shot of Hippos from 2003, all stacked in a Pyramid.
The hippo is a proud and noble creature, with a long and glorious history within the realm of SecondLife. I personally would enjoy hippos much more frequently, were it not for the unfortunate fact that hippos give me gas.
Nonetheless, any magnificent beast with a predeliction for the stomping of bugs, shall forever remain a favorite of mine. We need to be concerned for the future - the newbies who never knew a Virtual World with hippos.
They will all need to grow up hippoless. Do not let this be their future. There is still time. To say the hippos are not important is like...shooting the Linux penguin.
It's time to give the hippos the respect they deserve.
Please, let them sing again! Hippos can be very helpful. This one is on guard at the Isle of Lesbos (see pic up top; hippo in a hot tub).
It would be an outrage not to include this feature anymore.
I suggest investing in renewable hippos. New World Notes on the hippos:
http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/02/hippo-paradox.html "Heed, oh Lindens, the wisdom of the Hippo." sigh So much more to fix, and people worry about the hippos.
-ls/cm I think this one is more about keeping up the morale....
Many have said this issue is silly, in the light of all the other issues we've faced in SL. I agree. But we should be allowed silliness. We should embrace whimsey. This isn't "the real world." This is supposed to be, one one level or another, fun. Hippos? Fun.
Does this take away from real issues? I think not. This is probably, what, a handful of lines of code at most? A one-off for a good coder, at best. Perhaps somethign to focus on, for but a moment, while waiting for all those "Internet is Serious Business" fixes get done. :-D An ya. I vote on them too. Meanwhile, have a silly image that does little to address the issue. It's less work then anyone thinks. Soft is just pulling out the old hippo.cpp. At least that is what was said to me.
It really is just dropping a file into a directory then adding an "include <hippo.cpp>;" to another file. This is it, stop worrying about resources people. I have attached a patch to put hippos back into the veiwer. My apologies if the diff format is off...... I wrote it by hand
LL should realize that another company could release a virtual world with full hippo implementation. I'm afraid this would probably lead to a massive and fast migration of users.
Dante - nice patch :-D Hah!
.,-'''''-.:-^-._ / ' ( ` _\ \ \ _ .,-' )_\-._-._((_( Think of the hippos. Today is the 13th,, Hippo day is the 15th, NOW we see if the great Linden coders can resolve this MAJOR issue in time.
We await the reappearence of the great Hippo, HE will tell us how things stand, how the year will progress. The Hippo is the groundhog of SL. Hahahaha, I love you guys.
Alright, the hippos will have a home again. If anyone tries to tell me otherwise, I'll tell ya where and when to find 'em in-world. Arielyn Docherty, I like to think I'm not old enough to appreciate Gayle Peevy, but I do. 'Round here that song is a christmas staple and classic. I think it's the most played song on the radio at Christmas, aside from maybe the Christmas Shoes. So yes, right with you. First thing I thought of too.
sings along Oh, I want a hippopotamaus you Lindens! =D It's one small step for hippo, one giant step for hippokind. : )
Thank you very much everybody! Hippo protect not only from bugs, but they are the prim heird guardians

"If this gets 1,000 votes, I will submit a fix to maint-viewer that very day." 1018. We're waiting eerr... that's ↑ a missquote. Soft wanted to submit the patch (and already stated that he'll do so
Crap Mariner as a hippo (see attachment). Of course we care about the hippos, Crap! There's a little hippo in each and every one of us, and that's the proof.
"If this gets 1,000 votes, I will submit a fix to maint-viewer that very day. ***"
@Soft Linden. Let's see this submitted TODAY !! Setting to fix pending since soft has said that he'll be putting a patch in maint-viewer for it.
Congrats to everyone who voted.
The Hippo is saved! http://twurl.nl/nkioyb SAVE THE HIPPOS SAVE THE WORLD!
Being a particularly cute Hippo myself...I feel it this is a necessary and should be brought back YAY! HIPPO'S FTW!!! so there's a big hoop-de-doo over the word "Hippos!" showing up when you hit a key combination
lindens, please mark the above sappy people as not having a clue as to what's really broken or how it really gets fixed can't believe this crap is flagged "major" when there are actual showstoppers still floating around Another person who believes that the people here see this as anything other than a non-serious fun issue.
Seriously, look up 'humor' in the dictionary. Or 'humour' if you are from Britain. For that matter, look up 'alienation' and 'strawman argument' as well if you seriously think that the reason other bugs are delayed in their fixing is because the developers let themselves be taken away from any serious bugfixing work by a fun 1 minute patch as this. Also, please donate to the SL fund for adopted hippos. Thank you. So... is this in RC10? Hmn?
Ha! Absolutely not. Nothing but zomg world-will-end stuff goes into subsequent RCs. But 1.23 hopefully.
We are quiet, but it's because we are watching and waiting. And repeatedly mashing control-alt-shift-aitch then making sad faces and groaning.
But we are still here. If CT-245 could be put into the next version in the RC cycle, wouldn't this be more important than that?
Sure, one is data and one is code... It has recently come to my attention that the Linden coded term "hippos" is a covert term to signify "hippocampus" and that their ultimate evil plan is to link the brains of human beings through Second Life to an Internet that will be run by themselves in the Singularity.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090313/sc_livescience/brainscanscanreadmemories So I remove my vote. Prokofy Neva Perhaps Linden believes this affectation for hippos is a prurient desire and they're going to restrict it to adult island.
I move to set to either (Open) or Fix Pending, either of which describes the situation better than "Resolved", as the issue persists and is not yet patched in the latest release. I won't make the change myself as I'd prefer the creator of the issue or Soft, as the Assignee make the change.
This hasn't been resolved.
This wasn't in 1.23 but is fix pending
The desire to help is great - but please don't change anything from "fix pending" to "fixed" until something's seen in a release viewer or simulator.
You're all awesome. :3 I didn't - I reopened it from "Resolved," as it wasn't resolved.
This is still not fixed from DECEMBER 2008.
Is it really that hard to undo what you did to disable this? UNBELIEVABLE !!!! so glad we could get 1,000+ votes for this incredibly important bug
But you're not bitter, amirite?
lowered priority to what this always should have been, really this issue should have closed but since so many people seem to have lost their intelligence when dealing with this issue that wouldn't really be possible.
Well, compared to all the other outstanding and unaddressed issues - Mono scripts murdering region performance, chat lag making group chat unusable, region crossings worse than beta, forums still crippled after two years, etc etc ad nauseam - it is indeed a pretty minor point that Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H doesn't say "hippos!".
