 Description  « Hide
Provide a feature to import a .3DS file directly into a sculpt map in Second Life. An 3DS file is a save format for the data that makes up the appearance of an object. Currently, people have to use several programs to convert their objects from their favorite 3D modeler program into a sculpt map.

My understanding is that sculpties are very special 3d meshes that don't relate one-to-one with 3d files like .3DS, so this isn't necessarily feasible.

Will look at new feature requests after Qarl finishes the first round of bug squashing. Keeping ticket open.

It would be awesome to have some of these sculpt import options being requested : OBJ, 3DS, DXF etc etc. It would cut WEEKS off my current sculpt creation time.

HOWEVER, as Lex wrote, and anyone that currently creates good sculpts will know why this will not work too well ... the sculpt mesh need to manually edited to get the best results in SL, and its not just a case of dropping a few vertexes. An importer won't be able to do that - it needs manual mesh work.

Based on the above, I understand LL's hesitation to implement anything like this ... if they did, and it 'sort-of' imported sculpts, users are going to be complaining for them to get it to have the built in IQ to manipulate the mesh to import them perfectly. It's not just a format-editing tool thats needed, it needs a lot of IQ built into it in order to manipulate/optimize the resulting mesh for SL.

But seriously, LL haven't even got sculpts working in SL properly yet, so whats the chances of them taking this on?

It's a great item to have on the wish-list though, and I look forward to the day ... but don't hold your breath!

i'm in agreement with IAm Zabelin. any such import process would work HORRIBLY.. distorted/incorrect geometry, etc. i don't think it'd be worth the trouble for the small (SMALL) number of cases where it'd do a passable job.

the real solution to this problem is to get true meshes into SL. that's where i think LL should devote its resources.

That's right, and nowdays mostly none of us has slow internet connection to not be able to handle these 500kb or 1mb files. (That's why they threw back my ticket...) in 3ds files you can create the whole model and you don't need to separate parts if you want to animate them in real time. (Sculpt texture change animation sucks... and the animation's space usage equals roughly to a 3ds file) What's more the texturing is waaaaaaaaaay simplier with any 3d program, than torturing yourself to fit your textures perfectly on a spherical thing...
