 Description  « Hide
For newer AGP cards by ATI, second life fails to use more than 5.44MB video memory (the game detects 512MB of video memory, it just refuses to use it) (all of my other games work fine)

this causes the game to have normal fps when looking at 1 thing but the second you move the cam, the game lags badly

it also causes low frame rates

my old geforce 6800 used to hit around 25FPS in that sim but the 3850 is very slow in that sim even though the card is 5-6 times more powerful

I am using the latest drivers

Yep. Having the same trouble.
My old nVidia GeForce 4400Ti would give me a reasonable 15-25fps generally speaking.
Since I UPGRADED to supposedly the best AGP card available my fps have dropped to about 5 if I am lucky.

Spec:
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (2800 MHz)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP
OpenGL Version: 2.1.8304 Release

I have tried all manner of different drivers and hotfixes old and new to try and fix this, but SL just wont work with this card.
I have contacted the manufacturer and they say it is a SL problem, not an ATI problem.
Currently it is a severe Doofus problem.

I have the same issue

Windows Vista Ultamate (32)
Catalyst 9.2 (newest at the time)
AMD Athlon 64 (2.6 GHZ)
2 Gigs of ram (DDR 500)
Release Canadate Viewer.

I had an Radeon 9800 That got higher framrates at larger drawdistances than this card
I now have a 3850 AGP
The card i have is fast in other OGL DX10 and Rendering (OGL) aplications.
In situations with alot of people items or textures my 9800 would do fine
(even tho details are lower at high draw.)
With this new 3850 i must draw down And details down , relog, or turn off shaders to even get A FRAME
sometimes. I curently have draw at 180 somthing with some details turned down and i do ok.
The card is fast intialy when i logon (i guess unlike some others above) and i do fine
which is a sign of how powerful the card really is even tho its not using ANYWHERE NEAR its texutre
memory limit (witch i also can confirm) Imagine how fast it would be if it acualy did. This card is almost 10 times faster than my old card LITERALY. Please fix this issue.

I dont know if this has to do with the slider but its all turned up to 512 (maybe the game its self detects the card memory but dosnt use it because of clCLASS ISSUES weve seen b4) Thanx to makona for bringing light to this issue.

I too have problems with this card and the Linden browser and the caption of this Jira could not be more true. When I first installed this card months ago I filed a support ticket and the rep helping me quite quickly started giving me cock and bull this card isn't supported, like I'm so kinda idiot. Clearly the card IS supported as it's on the recommended list... which was the whole reason I bought it! Trying to go with Linden recommendation and obtain the best video card for this system I could get.

My ill's are that the card will crash two minutes after log on using the Linden browser... any back from 1.19 to the current RC. All manner of drivers have been tried. Most current chip set installed. Mouth hung any possible way I could think to get this thing up on a Linden browser... it can't happen in it's current incarnation.

It does appear its totally a Linden issue that this card will not work with their browser. ANY other app in the world runs fine with this card. Call of Duty original... Google Earth... several others.

The only way I can use this card and be in SL is using the 1.19 OnRez browser which is quite stable with the card. There are a few issues, but crashes are bearable and minimal. Frame rates are never better than 10, but it's about the same I had with the vid card I replaced, so I don't know the difference, yet that is pitiful for the power of this card.

I will say that a new Linden support person contacted me a few weeks ago wanting to get back into this issue. I just found the email yesterday, so we'll see if anything comes of that, but the jury is out and verdict in this is a Linden browser issue and probably none of ours that have posted here and they need to get the browser fixed with a better graphics frontend.

I see that no one is assigned to this case, so the Linden care machine continues to roll on.

If you have this card and issues you need to be voting on this Jira.

Here's a shot after VPU Recovery and a two minute crash.

ATI have released Catalyst 9.4 (4/8/2009). Please test the new drivers and add a comment.

Thank you : )

I've tried every driver ATI has issued, from V7.X to last month's release, (March). Never helps... as a matter of fact with the March drivers the problem was worse so I dropped back several versions to gain OnRez stability back. There's no reason for me to believe the April driver releases will help, but I will try them soon and report.

Same problem as in attached screen dump number 1.

SL Worked fine (but my photoshop did not). I installed the newest (Catalyst 9.4) ATI driver. Now I get silly triangles all around.

with the installation of 9.4 drivers I found a bios option labeled Optimization, which has three setting: normal, Turbo 1 and Turbo 2.

Turbo 1 provided no relief, but Turbo 2 has allowed the Linden browser (client) to not crash as quickly. It still will crash after a time, but it's improved in duration.

Otherwise, barring that change, the 9.5 drivers do nothing to repair the problem.

I also bought this card with the sole purpose of increasing performance. It was the best that my system could use and it was listed by Second Life as compatible. After installing it I experienced nothing but immediate hard crashes and my Second Life was over. I tried every possible combination of drivers and viewers always hoping the next version would work. I gave up for months until I read somewhere that Onrez viewer was working for him (but you had to have VBO shut off). I tried it with Cat version 9.4 and I can now enter Second life sometimes for an hour without crashing but my frame rates are no better than with my old 9500 card. Then what does Linden Labs do? They take over Onrez and announce there will be no more support or further development of Onrez viewer. So sad because Onrez was a much better interface than the standard viewer was. It was like Firefox compared to IE Explorer. So far Onrez continues to work for me although not as well as it should for the what the capabilities of the 3850 should be. I am also afraid to try using new drivers for fear that it will all break again. Oh, also doesn't it seem to prove that the problem is Linden's since no viewer of theirs works at all but an older third party's will work a lot better? To bad they can't find out why and develop something from there. Using Second Life viewers with VBO shut off still crash after a minute or less of use. So that is not the cure either.

Hi, adding myself to the queue here. HD 3850 AGP with latest catalyst driver, which is now 9.6! A P4 3.0 HT, 2 gig ram, SATA hard disk - all areas of the system well over the min req!

Last night a friend from an mmorpg (nodiatis) invited me to come see second life. I had heard about it before, but was still really blown away upon arrival. However, graphics issues hit me from the start: super low FPS and the experience of what I would describe simply as a visual anomalies; when panning the camera, large flat shapes can appear in mid air and obscure the view. Also objects can stretch out really thin almost like sheets of paper before snapping back.

Putting my settings right down to the minimum and increasing the disk cashe to max seems to have helped a little with the anomalies, but the FPS is still ridiculously low (<10 at times). From reading the peoples issues here I feel lucky not to have had any crashes and also note that you are doing something about it, just hope it arrives soon so I can really get into SL

Thanks,

Nim.
