I was thinking about why doesn't my avatar pop just right up at start with all my stuff on it. Wouldn't it be a good idea to store the current avatar data on the users' hdd too? Nowadays' avatars are becoming more and more complicated and takes more time to download them. Other users could read the avatar's data from the SL servers and the user won't have to wait for his/her avatar to load.

Me, I like it more to see my av as others see it. If I am a cloud, or have grey textures, or seldomly distorted textures, I can do something to solve this. If I would be perfectly loaded from a locally saved state, but others see me strangly, I wouldn't know it.

You can't tell if others see you loaded by just looking at your avatar. It depends on the connection. If you have a faster internet than an other person, you might see yourself fully loaded, but others might see you partly loaded, and this goes backwards too. Or maybe the just teleported and they won't see you loaded in the next second (if so, they are nasa workers). I think this is a great idea, because it's irritating to have my avatar reloaded over and over again, and when my net is painfully slow, i have to wait ages till I can edit any parts on me. And maybe it'd be a good idea to store the friends' avatars' data too.

True. But normally my av is fast loaded so I don't need the proposed feature. Maybe it could be useful for people with slow internet connections.

When you say data I assume you mean content like skins, clothing and huds. When you start storing content on the users end it's only a matter of time before someone cracks whatever safe guards are put in place to prevent misuse. And when I say misuse I am referring to content theft and IP infringement.

I agree some improvement would be great but I really can't see storing any content on the client side.

I agree with you but I wouldn't post this if I haven't though of this:
If you download these data, it'll be stored on your hdd, and your SL will read your data from your hdd to be faster, and save download time for you, but others will still download your data from the main servers. If anyone tweaks his/her data it'll only affect his/her client, not the others. What's more if someone hacks the downloaded content, SL could detect if the data matches in some points of the content's code or not (if it matches and it's hacked it'll crash or won't do good, but this is not the point...). If it doesn't match, or you don't have any content files, you'll have those downloaded. And if you edit your avatar or anything else downloaded, it'll affect the server version, and then it'll be downloaded.
I Think this is pretty easy to do and it's safe enough too to not have any hacking problems. At least most of the games work like this, you have a custom skin, but other's will se defaults if they don1t have it. So you have a moded avatar from hdd but other's will see it from the server in the worst hacked case...

Hehe, half of European users would need this, including me =P
