A friend of mine had this happen to her a few days ago, too. Agreed, this is a definite concern. I'm curious what exactly goes on that causes this to happen.
This has likewise happened to a friend of mine, in mid-May, and in much the same way as described here. I don't recognize the names of the reporter or other commenter, so I suspect these are separate occurrences. The problem may be rare, but it's therefore not unique – and very troubling!

This has happened to me on 4 different occasions and is very irratating and disturbing. I hope they fix this issue...I thought IMs were for private chatting, if i wanted the others in the sim or around to hear i'd have said something in open chat.
This does sound very irritating/disturbing – we'd love to have a solid repro for this if you can make it happen at will. (As rare as it is.)
And to confirm, this is still happening today with Second Life 1.17.0 (12) ? Let us know if it still happens in 1.18, come this Wednesday. Happened to me on saturday 24th. Although, I submitted it as exploit (FYI report rt.lindenlab.com #895880 ) ,cause it was for people as i was spamming them, and for me, disturbing for me and my privacy.
I recently got an IM from a group I didn't belong to, so did the people surrounding me. This was two days ago on Jun 28th.
Just had the same happen as NeoBokrug above - Sunday July 08th at just before 2pm PDT I received a group IM from a group I am not, and have NEVER been, a member of. The IM'er was in a different sim (I asked). The group I "overheard" was Edge Dancer Chat, the sim I was in at the time was Tortosa. I am still using client version 1:17:0.
Unfortunately there IS no way to repro this bug - it just seems to happen, quite at random, and rarely - but it is a nasty bug for all that, as it endangers privacy. On Friday at [2007/09/21 21:15] Yummie Olsen. I was at Black Mire and I was in IM with someone, having a personal converstation. He had teleported to the Blue Note and we were still in IM. The IM never closed for me. At this time he IMed something to me and I replied. When I replied I had people at the Blue Note reply back. They could only read what i was typing and not what he was typing as he could also not read what they were typing. Needless to say, yes it is a very very bad bug and very upsetting. I didnt appreciate others reading what i was saying to one person that was a private conversation. It did all go into my chat history under like the personal IM chat. If there is anyway i can help fix this issue please let me know. I was hurt by it and I would love to see it fixed.
Happened to me two weeks ago. I was having an intimate conversation that got broadcasted to people and clubs I didn't even know. Totally killed my professional and personal life in sl because it was thought I did it on purpose and I had to start over from scratch. Lost a lot of rl money and friends over this bug and i'm not happy about it.
I have had multiple occurrences with this issues. I was in IM with person A, and three other people added an IM to the private channel asking why they were receiving the message.
Today, I've had three or four occurrences with this issue. I've been meeting lots of new people who should not be seeing my private discussions with the person i thought i was talking to alone. all chat logs are available, just let me know 1. In some cases this occurred after I'd done a cut/paste from one chat window to another. This is a serious security breach in my opinion and should be considered a show stopper for use and release of the software. Unfortunately with my two year old laptop, it does run better there than on the current released viewer software. I too and having the exact same issue tonight. A friend and I are on 2 different Sims...he IMed me and 3 separate people asked why I was sending them the message. My friend could NOT see them talking. So I closed down that window and IMed him. Same issue occurred. All chat logs are available if LL needs them
And yes this is a SERIOUS security breach IMHO. I am using windlight 1.18.5 (haven't downloaded latest yet) ... this problem occured for me last night was in a private IM with operations manager of a sim i work at ... my private IM with her was shared with two people i knew and one complete stranger and I was not in the same locality as them neither was the person I was IM'ing ... confidential matters were being discussed this is extremely embarrassing ... and detrimental to Sim operations
Happened here too. A friend sent me an IM and it was broadcast to my entire sim - not sure if it went beyond that. This was a discussion of a highly personal and private situation. Luckily, the people in my sim at the time mostly ignored it and used some discretion.
I have no reproduction of this but I can tell you the IM originated in the Dazzle sim and was rebroadcast to me - and my home sim, Aquilae. A couple of days ago I was having a conversation with my employer/friend when all of the sudden a ton of people started taking part in our conversation, she never saw the messages, however, I did. It was very confusing and this is not the first time it's happened. Today it happened yet again, here's a little bit of a paste from a couple of days ago.
[2008/01/21 16:32] Kayte Benelli: um...i think you im'd the wrong person I'm not exactly sure how this is happening, but it's very scary. I mean I could've been discussing money, or other vital information, she is my employer after all. I was using 1.18.5 (3) when it happened, but I was using windlight today and it happened yet again. Please do something about this issue, this is very serious. Thanks for the continued reports on this, it's appreciated. I'm going to ask our devs & QA to see what other info we need from you to make progress on it.
Historically, there've been times where someone thought they were in a private 1-to-1 IM but they were infact in the remnants of a group chat (with the tab misleadingly showing a single Resident's name) and became confused as other participants started speaking up. I don't know if that's related, tho. This just happened to me earlier this evening. I was at a sim dancing with friends and IMing with a friend who was in a completely different sim. Suddenly, random people in my sim starting receiving my friend's IMs as well. They only received his side of the conversation. The IMs were of a personal nature and the people receiving them were angry as they assumed it was intentional and some said they were going to report my friend. Both my friend and I have filed bug reports about this.
Has just happened to me tonight too. I im'ed a friend who is on another sim, and had two different people comment that I had im'ed the wrong person
This has happened to my friend and I twice tonight - both of us are in separate SIMs! Very, very frustrating SL - can you please make it a priority to sort. Very many thanks
Happens to me yesterday in 19.0 RC1
I have just had a random im come into me that was meant for another person. I have never met either people.
I am using version Second Life Server 1.19.0. I have had this happen to me today, and a friend of mine had it happen just the other day.
I've also noticed something similar in the past, which may, or may not be related. If it is related, this may help research and troubleshoot the problem. On several occasions, I have noticed, when an object sends IM's too quickly, instead of going to the intended recipient, they go to everyone in the same region as the object. Although it is not entirely consistent, it is fairly reproducible. Those of you who think you're experiencing this, PLEASE confirm if it's infact a group IM you're getting, even if the IM tab shows a single Resident's name.
You should be able to tell by looking for a "Group Info" button in the IM tab. If you click that button, it'll tell you which group the IM belongs to. You may also be able to click the "<<" button on the far right and see if multiple names appear in that list – if so, it's a group IM. And to let you know, we are working on the "Sometimes group IM's appear to be person to person IM's" bug to reduce potential confusion, its internal reference # is DEV-10151. I know for a fact that when I experienced this, it was not a group im. In fact, when my friend first told me it happened to him, I, myself, suspected he was confused. Once it happened to me, I realized he was not.
When it happend to me, it was a private IM session, established with one individual on my friends list. This individual is not the same person that experienced it before. The contact I was talking to did not see the confused responses coming in from the individuals who were not expecting my messages. These people were not on my friends list. These people were just in the same region as the person I was in IM with. Torley Linden: If help, you can see my screenshot, when this happens, here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4743
@Abelv, thanks, that's greatly appreciated! Will make sure our devs see it too. Thanks for the confirmation as well, Thadeous.
Once again this has happened. I'm seriously getting sick of the privacy issues here! This time it was in my club group chat and not in private im with my ex wife as stated above a few months ago in october. I will be posting a link to this issue and perhaps after enough people complain somone will fix it. Screen shot at http://digitalreality4u.com/chatbox.bmp
Stanton Sinister, calm down. For starters, it is already being looked at. But with something odd happening like this, its going to be one of those bugs which is going to be as hard to find as a pin on a mountain top. Software engineering, isn't like putting together and fixing push bikes! Its a science, somethings can take two seconds to find and fix, other things can take years just to track down.
Fixing bugs tends to take longer and is harder to do, than writing the application in the first place. So I had this happen to me just the other day and it was HORRIBLE! People were panicking and yelling at me because the message was totally an accusation when taken out of context. So they all thought I had made a personal attack on them. That wasn't the case.. and I had to apologize to 20 or so people in one sim, and the neighboring sim.
No, I did not by some freak accident open up a groupchat session.. At first I thought my IM was somehow sent to a group I was in, but right away I was able to confirm that it was everyone in the sim (and the neighboring sim). Neither of which that I was in, but that my friend was. So I've been performing several tests trying to reproduce the bug and have been pretty successful. Here's some facts I've run into: 1. Person A (the sender) and Person B (the receiver) have to be in different sims/regions, neighboring or not. I could not reproduce the bug when the two people were in the same sim. (I didn't perform the test with void sims) 2. The IM sent is misdelivered to everyone in the sim and all neighboring sims where Person B (the receiver) is located. 3. Person A (the sender) starts receiving replies from people in Person B's sim in the IM tab for Person B. (Because everyone receives it with the same session_id as the intended target, Person B, I suppose) 4. The message length appears to be a determining factor. Message lengths between 984 and 1023 characters long would produce the bug. I was unable to reproduce it at less than 984. 5. It doesn't happen everytime, obviously. It's inconsistent. Lag spikes in the sim SEEM to increase the likelihood of the bug occurring, happening more frequently when someone would TP into the sim, or cross a sim boundary. Sooo.. In short.. If you're sending messages that exceed 984 characters in length to anyone who isn't in the same sim as you, there's a chance it'll be received by a whole bunch of people you don't know. A very good chance depending on certain circumstances.. whatever they are.. Lag.. Packetloss.. But I think the 984 limit has to be a good clue.... Tests performed manually and also with the aid of a libsl bot. Resident Snowy Sidran experienced this same behavior today on the Innuendo sim between noon and 1pm today (6th March 2008). From what she said, her details match those provided by Uchi. Relogging did not seem to solve the issue, but restarting the sim may have. Snowy is still testing and will get back to me with further details if they arrise.
Sorry for late reply on this Torley...it was DEFINITELY NOT a group chat. I have over 10 years experience with chat and was a sysop on another graphical chat (SL is WAY better btw
Fixed in previous server version.
