Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-34700

 Description  « Hide
Previous versions of the ATI Catalyst drive for Windows Vista did not include full OpenGL support, so SL would not accept them. Current version (OpenGL driver version 6.14.10.0681) causes SL client to crash on launch, with no other error message.

The problem is not with Second Life, it is with the ATI drivers. Second Life crashes inside of their dll, and Second Life works fine using ATI's XP drivers on Vista.
See: http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=163395

Problem seems to be that SL fails to call glEnable (GL_TEXTURE_2D) before using the glTexSubImage2D function. Solution is to call LLGLEnable texture_2d(GL_TEXTURE_2D) sometime before the call. Putting this line at the end of the LLImageGL constructors seems to work fine.

Problem solved, I think.

Nevermind that. Seems that there is an issue still.

I'm having a similar problem here. It may not be the same thing because I'm on XP SP2 with an NVIDIA graphics card, but when I often try to login, it shows me the usual "Detecting Hardware", then flashes Second Life's screen as a black void, then it disappears, then the Crash Logger pops up. I don't know if this is the same problem, but what's described in this issue and VWR-88 sound similar... I'm asking around internally.

I have Vista Ultimate using a qudra fx 1400 and it crashes as well on startup. Says something about my driver being out of date. But its the latest Vista driver from nvidia. Should I use an Xp driver pack and try it that way?

I'm getting this same error, can't start SL at all. Any workarounds discovered?

For the records it's Windows Vista Ultimate x64, Dual ATI x1950pro (Crossfire), with Catalyst v07.2

I marked this "Won't Fix" but it's actually "Won't Finish" because this should've been fixed for awhile now, per ATI's driver updates.

Has this been fixed? I can't run Second Life on Vista. Tried both Internet Explorer and Firefox. I just get the crash. My graphics card is ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M.

I'm guessing this is due mainly to a driver issue as explained here:

This is September the 9th. Are you guys going to fix this? Please!!!!

Hobb Voom added a comment - 09/Sep/07 06:35 AM
Make SL work with ATI Mobility Radeon Video Cards/ with Vista.

I'm getting this same problem, SL tries to load but after keeping the black screen up for a few seconds it crashes with no error. I'm running Vista Home Premium with ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M also! this needs to be fixed or find a way around it...

Soleil Arbizu added a comment - 20/Oct/07 06:29 PM
Also, i was told that SL doesnt run with dual-core processors, is this true? if so, is there anything I can download that will let it work?

I'm running two 1GB Diamond Radeon HD2900XT cards in Crossfire on a 4GB desktop system with Vista Home Premium. All drivers are current. I'm also running Vista Home Premium an a 2GB laptop with a fairly vanilla Intel video card. When I want to see rich detail and silky movement, i use the desktop. When I want to stay on line, however, I use the laptop. This is because the desktop uber-computer crashes in SL unpredictably, usually every 10-15 minutes or so, sometimes more frequently. The crash requires a network card reset to recover. The laptop doesn't do this. I DO, however, get video blips with about the same frequency as I get the desktop crashes, though the laptop doesn't go down.

Hi,

I've solved my problem, updating my Ati RAdeon driver to 8.442.0.0 release

Now SL client works properly

thanks

Am running Vista SP1 with the latest viewer (1.19.0.5) and latest ATI drivers (8.3) and everything seems to be fine! Solved all my crashing problems by defaulting my overclocked CPU. I would bet that both Vista and SL get blamed for a lot of issues related to overclocking, and at one point, I also suspected my video cards. Two days of SL partying without a problem, and counting. atm, I am a very happy camper.

It's a major problem with version 9.1 of the ATI driver. I have dual Radeon 2600 cards in crossfire array. I've done everything to get it to work including removing them from the array. Nothing works.
I've updated drivers, I've uninstalled and reinstalled them, I've tried different versions of Windows, I've done about everything I can think of. SL just won't work correctly with ATI cards no matter what. As ATI gets more advanced in their drivers, SL seems to fall behind in its ability to use things like OpenGL and the like. So, like you've said about changing the OpenGL line, it's not the only line that needs modified.
There are still a few leaks to be fixed. But it works well for the most part. Still crashes often and causes the ATI drivers to crash as well. But not much has been done to address it. Really, I would go so far as to say nothing has been done to address it. But that's just my opinion.
If anyone has a fix, please let me know as I would love to spread it around a bit.

Thanks.

Rhuakiel, thank you for reporting this.

For Crossfire issues please see VWR-7964 and add your comments and vote.

re crashing with the ATI Catalyst 9.1 please test the latest RC which can be downloaded from here Release Candidate Test Viewers

Please see these articles for How can I improve performance ? Turning off WindLight rendering and How do I check for packet loss (network lag)?

If it is still an issue, please

  • open a new issue and add (copy and paste) your full computer environment, Help > About Second Life, including the Viewer you are using and the Region where you have this issue.
  • give details of any error messages
  • give details of any particular in-world activity that causes the Viewer to crash

Also, please continue to send in your Crash Reports to LL Edit > Preferences > General > Crash Reports > Always Send.

Thank you : )

For account-specific help please post a Ticket with Support see JIRA issue posting guidelines

@Rhuakiel

Please try 1.22.8 as it has some better crash reporting and I'll be able to analyze what's causing your crash a little better. And Ellla's directions are spot on. I'd start a new jira for this if it's still an issue and let us know!
