I'm not sure if this is possible without making a special KDE version of the viewer, but I think adding phonon as a fourth option for sound would help a lot of people. Currently in KDE 4, running the SL client will cause sound to stop working in any other program, because SL will use OSS which only supports one client at a time. Fixing this is difficult, because KDE is not made to use esound. I found that simply installing esound and running esd still caused sound to not work in KDE programs. There is probably a way to get KDE working with esd, but it is not obvious. I think Phonon support would make the SL viewer more user friendly in general.

That esound and oss crap will be gone once fmod is fully replaced by OpenAL which is currently in progress. After that it would be OpenAL's job to support Phonon which i dont think it does already. Ive had your same problem with sound not working in other programs and compiling SL with OpenAL instead solved it, it uses alsa directly and still doesnt interfere with other programs, including voice.

Is there a time frame on when OpenAL will be in the official client?

Ok i maybe be wrong about OpenAL being the magical fix because its not helping everyone, but it should be ready by viewer 1.23.

Hmm interesing point herehttp://dot.kde.org/1170773239/1170854741/ , Phonon wont really do the job we want when it comes to actual sound in SL. However, it may be helpfull for streaming, Audio and Video. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonon_(KDE) , Phonon can use different backends, including gstreamer and MPlayer, Quicktime, DirectX this would beat the hell out of using gstreamer and quicktime directly and simplify Crossplatform support for streaming.

I'm going to close this request. Sound in SL has been working perfectly for me in KDE since OpenAL was added.

OpenAL made this request redundant.
