Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-29268

 Description  « Hide
Don't know if this is svc or vwr - please feel free to move it if there's somewhere more appropriate.

Copied from https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/vote/vote.php?get_id=2726

Please add support for (at least) AND, OR and NOT operators in search strings. Example search: good AND clothes NOT camp NOT casino.

Adding + for AND and - for NOT would be nice, while you're in there.

This relates to an internal, much bigger process to improve search – SL-29268. Thanks for putting this here!

I'd like to expand on the request by adding the checkboxes: By Name, and: By Description
Where the search will only look for the offered strings in either the Name of the subject (depending on type of search this would be the name of the land, Name of the product or Name of the group) or the Description of the subject.

Would this feature request fit in this feature request, or would a seperate request need to be made?

And exact phrase matching
Optional stemming would also be nice - either through use of wildcards * or $ or a checkbox to turn it on

Actually the best model to use for search criteria is any of the online search engines.... google, altavista, lycos, etc.
Quotation marks for exact phrase, automatically drops "and, the, of" etc. and it lists in a known order, for instance, by traffic (which yes is going away) or relevance, like if something has 4 of your 5 keywords, it would be lower than something with all 5. There could even be dividers if LL wanted to sort places by traffic or whatever the new metering will be, or classifieds by price.

As a friend said, "All you have to do is ask one question, 'What would Google do?' "

I like Jordan's suggestion. People know how to use search engines and if SL search worked same way they wouldn't need to learn anything new.

Searches need to have "regular expressions".. that's basically what you want. You also should have parenthesis and quotation support for exact matches and exclusions/inclusions.

Is this improved now with the new search? Can this be closed, or are there still conditions not met by the new search?

You can use AND,OR, NOT and other Boolean search terms in the new Search All tab.
