 Description  « Hide
The Friends List is broken. Presence data is sometimes loaded, sometimes not. When presence data IS loaded, sometimes it is not displayed correctly [the list is stuck either entirely as (waiting)/(hippos) or as a mix if names + (waiting)/(hippos)]. There is clearly a problem with the list, as calling cards do not appear to be affected, and still work correctly when the list is borked.

Workarounds for seeing who is actually online without using the Friends List:

One known cause that will definitely break the Friends List is clearing your cache (See VWR-1998). In 1.19.0, presence data is loaded but the Friends List will display only as (waiting)/(hippos). In 1.18.5.3, the bug is less consistent, but still occurs.

Relogging without clearing your cache will fix is one bug, but note that this will not solve other bugs in the Friends List, and that at times names will show up as (waiting) after no cache clearing occurs: a bug that relogging may or may not fix.

If your Friends List is stuck as (waiting) or showing people as offline when they're actually online and should not be invisible to you, there are a few things you can try to restore the name:

In 1.18.5.3:

  • IM the person and wait for a reply. If they're stuck as (waiting), their name will appear. If they're listed offline, they'll switch to online.
  • Wait for a friend to login/relog. Their name will appear when they do.
  • Toggle the "show online" checkbox.
  • Send out a mass TP to your Friends List.
  • Relog. This may fix most or all of the list for some people.

In 1.19.0:

  • Readd that person to your Friends List.
  • IM the person stuck as (waiting). Their name will appear in the IM tab even though their listing will not change.
  • Relog. This may fix most or all of the list for some people.

Note that the 1.18.5.3 solutions do not work in 1.19.0, which currently has no decent workaround. If you find one, please edit this description accordingly.

Apparently, the OnRez viewer does not have this problem. Calling cards also still work as well.

Actually, in my experience, if they IM ME, they still don't show as online in my list until I reply to their IM.

Smiley Barry added a comment - 20/Mar/07 03:13 PM
Confirmed with the latest First Look viewer. In that one it's about 20-30% fixed, as few appear online, and others who are also appear offline. And, "Someone Somebody is offline" messages don't come if you started an IM with that person and you have yet to finish that conversation. If you reply, then it says "Someone Somebody is offline".

Also, adding more details to the issue info.

Smiley Barry added a comment - 20/Mar/07 03:21 PM
Changed Enviornment field.

StarSong Bright added a comment - 29/Mar/07 12:53 AM
I have noticed this too. I am on the latest OSX client and I never had an empty friend list until this update. Now it happens every other time I log in. After a while it sometiems kicks in, or if I IM somebody, otherwise i have to relog.

bushing Spatula added a comment - 23/Apr/07 12:49 AM
this is not a critical bug

Sadako Shikami added a comment - 23/Apr/07 07:25 PM
this is a critical bug when you run a business in SL.

a workaround is to offer a teleport to the friend you wonder is online ... i put "just testing, ignore" and if they're on, the blue window pops up and i can then see them online in my friend's list.

Fluf Fredriksson added a comment - 28/Apr/07 03:26 AM
Not a critical bug?
SL is a social interactive environment. Not knowing who's online leads to misunderstanding and sometimes even bad feelings when people feel they have been ignored. Life's complicated enough on SL without unintentionally blanking people.
It gets my vote.

chel pixie added a comment - 28/Apr/07 12:38 PM
This is still a critical issue. I have had a lot of friends show up but friend's list still isn't correctly reflecting status' correctly.

Social environments need correct status of people that are important to your everyday communication. This needs to be addressed more quickly.

Ella Larsson added a comment - 28/Apr/07 06:07 PM
I agree that this is definitely critical for a number of us, either running businesses or here for socialization. I'm having the same issues as described above and it's becoming very frustrating.

chocoletkiss milk added a comment - 28/Apr/07 06:28 PM
this issue has been a problem before the lastest upgrade, how is it not critical.. FIX IT PLEASE

Melanie Milland added a comment - 29/Apr/07 02:45 AM
I run a business in SL and I use the friends list to track my online employees.

To me this is a blocker, I have lost massive amounts of business because of it!

This is not cosmetic, it is IMPORTANT. Please fix!

shaun chernov added a comment - 29/Apr/07 12:48 PM
Please dix thsi dam issue

Im tired of logging in Since 1.15 to never have a friends list with people online

even relogging doesnt help

This is a critical bug for buiness and for those who use SL asa chat program and a social means

Fnordian Link added a comment - 29/Apr/07 05:06 PM
This is indeed a critical issue. Prior to 1.15 it happened on occasion (sometimes more than others and to some people more than others). As of 1.15 it's been happening most of the time to most of the people. It affects and degrades the whole Second Life social experience and has a very noticeable affect on business too.

shai khalifa added a comment - 29/Apr/07 07:34 PM
As many of us have relationships in SL that are across differnet continents and time zones - not to mention just around the corner - it's a right royal pain in the arse to have to keep IMming people to ask them if they'r e online or not. As with the Group Notices issue. If this functionality has come to be relied upon and used as a cornerstone for communication in SL, then FIX THE DAMNED THING.

I can even see in Yahoo Messenger whether my friends are online - so it's not like it's friggin new and innovative.

meade paravane added a comment - 29/Apr/07 10:07 PM
Torley had bumped MISC-142, which got closed as a dup of this, to critical.

WorkingOnIt Linden added a comment - 30/Apr/07 12:25 PM
Hot, HOT issue this week. (This is Torley, showing you this is being worked on.)

EnCore Mayne added a comment - 30/Apr/07 06:21 PM
this comment is more towards the jira functionality. this issue has been duplicated numerous times (thanks inProgress, WorkingOnIt, Torley for putting them altogether) what happens with all the votes for the duplicates? i note from looking back at only one (MISC-142) that some of those 34 members have not had their names input here. is there someway jira can combine comments when dupes are linked? this interface is complicated enough, i suppose hoping, wishing, and dreaming might one day bring us to all being on the same page.

Patrice Cournoyer added a comment - 30/Apr/07 07:47 PM
this issue is important, really!

Impostor Kagekiyo added a comment - 01/May/07 02:15 AM
Absolutely this is important...and so unpredictable since the new upgrade. If it always worked, that would be fine...and even if it never worked at all (like it didn't for the Wednesday of the upgrade), at least we would know it didn't, but to have this 'are you online, are you not' uncertainty, is killing relationships

Marion Rickenbacker added a comment - 01/May/07 03:14 AM
This problem now seems to occur every time I log on. As the "friends online" page on the website is not working either, the only way to find out if people are online is to IM them, one by one by one ............ this is seriously affecting my ability to use SL

scarlet vavoom added a comment - 01/May/07 05:49 AM
I manage a large clothing store online and need to stay in contact with the employees. This is very frustrating from the busniess side of this, but also because SL is a social enviroment, as mentioned above and it needs highest priority to get it fixed. Seems this issue has been ignored since 1.15 came out last week, or we the people of SL no longer have a voice. Frustrating indeed, not happy.

Smiley Barry added a comment - 01/May/07 06:18 AM
[Added Workaround, and changed my lousy Enviornment field editing ^.^]

And, yeah, this is a MAJOR problem. Good though i got a friends group! That way i can see who's online, and who's not, regardless of the friends list issues or public search visibility.

mystikal faddoul added a comment - 01/May/07 08:10 AM
In my opinion this is the number one fix that needs to happen above all else - friends online in world and on the web as it completely hinders social and business interactions. I'm sure it is a problem for Lindens too and anyone who spends time in world knows how important it is but I would even call it a stopped-level bug because so much depends upon friends online when you run a business.

IceCat Panther added a comment - 01/May/07 09:28 AM
This is a very important issue I have friends in europe and across the country and I dont know if they are on line or not. When someone is not online I cant send them a teleport how can this be a solution please tell me how to send a teleport to everyone as a test. and what if you have 100 ppls on your friend list. sometimes when I keep reloging finaly I get evryone online ON but its very anoing.
Please fix this ASAP VERY IMPORTANT.

WorkingOnIt Linden added a comment - 01/May/07 09:47 AM
This is currently on Studio Blacklight's (dev group @ LL focusing on critical pain points) issues to fix ASAP. This issue will be updated as progress is made.

@Smiley: Thanks for the workaround tip in the meantime.

Gigs Taggart added a comment - 01/May/07 11:54 AM
Please review what the various bug levels mean. This is not a critical bug, it is Major.

Critical - Crashes, loss of data, severe memory leak.
Major - Major loss of function.

This is a Major loss of function. It is a Major bug. Please leave it as such.

WorkingOnIt Linden added a comment - 01/May/07 03:07 PM
From WEB-100, my comment:
========-

is working again as of this writing. The previous changes were checked in and went live later, because we were waiting for problems earlier last week with the backbone systems to subside. Enjoy!
========-

This webpage can be used as a kind of workaround until we fix the inworld issue.

taco rubio added a comment - 01/May/07 06:21 PM
»http://secondlife.com/community/friends.php

is NOT working again as of this writing. For me, I show friends online, but when i go to page 2 (of 2), my friends query ends at the letter O. This has been the case since January, which was the last time I saw any friends from P-Z.
========-

I had been using this as kind of a workaround until it was the issue was fixed inworld, until this too broke.

daisyblue hefferman added a comment - 02/May/07 09:26 AM
I, and most of my friends, are having the exact same problem described in the initial bug post. I have reported this problem in both Misc 142 and WVR-526. Still not working!! Absolutely major problem.
For days, no one was even assigned to work on it.
And it is a major pain to tp to all my friends list. Especially when even group ims are limited to 20 at a time, and only go to those logged as online. This needs immediate attention.

mystikal faddoul added a comment - 02/May/07 10:13 AM
Agree with Taco, http://secondlife.com/community/friends.php is not working for all users all of the time. I have attempted to access the friends online from the web several times on 5/1 following WorkingOnIt Linden'sp post as well as this morning, and each time it has shown zero friends, and then if I log into world (where friends list may or may not show anyone online), find that I have friends actually online once we trade IMs. If I then toggled back to the web page, it was STILL showing no friends online.

THis is documented in SVC-100 . Please do not close either of these until confirmed that they have been fixed for all users. Thanks.

taco rubio added a comment - 02/May/07 10:41 AM
Actually, I believe mystikal meant to state <a href="https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-100">WEB-100 </a>

Furia Freeloader added a comment - 02/May/07 01:24 PM
Before the downtime today (5/02/07) I was able to fix my friends list by logging out and in. Now however that seems not to work at all, and my friends list is not loading. I did however notice that the https://secure-web12.secondlife.com/community/friends.php has been fixed, which is a good workaround (rather than IMing every friend). However enough people are unaware of the website friends list that it is stiltl a critical bug in my opinion.

Greho Otaared added a comment - 03/May/07 12:03 AM
I suppose it's repetitious by now, but my experience is the same as many others'. I do not see friends as being online until I send an IM to my friends. Then I get online or offline notifications in the IM window, and in the case of online, the blue bubble.

My friends list reports false positives (i.e., not actually online but showing as online), but only occasionally, when I logon. Most of my friends list problems are with false negatives (i.e., online, but not showing as such). My home, where I usually arrive in-world, is on an ACS sim, Tiger Creek, to be exact. I wonder if that makes any difference, me being off the mainland when I come and go?

Dirk Talamasca added a comment - 03/May/07 02:30 PM
Hi there, I am wondering if this might be of some help in finding a solution. I always have my online friends notifications turned OFF and my friends list retains most of its integrity. I am able to see the majority of my friends online but there are a few that do not appear until messaged or vice-versa. I would be interested to know how many feel they are more greatly affected by this bug with friends notifications ON rather than OFF.

taco rubio added a comment - 03/May/07 11:54 PM
Reverted priority to Critical, involves data loss.

WorkingOnIt Linden added a comment - 04/May/07 08:56 AM
Kelly did a lot of investigation on this and an internal fix has been checked in for the friends_1-15 branch. Awaits QA going through the test plan. More news to come!

Mano Nevadan added a comment - 18/May/07 08:23 AM
A workaround I use is a script that uses the LSL functions to determine if people are online. Those don't seem to be fooled. I either cache the UUIDs of friends in notecards beforehand, or in lookup tables after querying the w-hat avatar key database. So at least I can verify for individuals if they're really on or not.

Rascal Ratelle added a comment - 19/May/07 06:56 PM
STILL having issues with the friends list, i"m on a mac client.
the fix is NOT working.
freinds list still NOT updating, Friends list STILL does not show correct statis.

WorkingOnIt Linden added a comment - 21/May/07 12:37 PM
This should be resolved per http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/05/18/rolling-restart-happening-now-addresses-key-issues/

I wasn't able to reproduce problems – my Friends list shows up as expected.

@Rascal and others still experiencing problems, please provide further details.

kelly linden added a comment - 22/May/07 10:36 AM
I believe the general case of this to be fixed. If you believe it is not then please comment here or in a new jira item with the following:
  • The name of the region you first logged into, and the date and time you logged in.
  • If possible the host name (from Help -> About, should be simX.lindenlab.com or similar) for the sim you logged on to.
  • Did you see ANY friends as online when you first logged in (within the first 30 seconds)?
  • When you first logged on, specifically which friends were shown as offline when they actually were online?
  • When you first logged on, specifically which friends were shown as online when they actually were offline?

If your friends list worked when you first logged in but is incorrect later then that is a different bug. Please include the above information as well as information on the regions of all accounts involved when the problem occurred and the order of logins (I logged in, then my friend did but I didn't see their status etc).

Yes, thats a lot of information, I don't expect it all but the more provided the easier it will be to track down the issue.

Thanks!

Friends list after last update doesn't work again, i can see some of my friends on, but if i try to send them an IM then the answer is: "User not on line" and a blue tag appear saying he is off. Also the same in reverse, apparently off line friends appear on when IM.

Elrik Merlin added a comment - 24/May/07 07:01 AM
This has been a problem on and off for a while but now is particularly prevalent after the update of Weds May 23 (I am running vwr 1.16.0.(5) XP and Mac).

Typically:
Friend does not show as online (not bold);
Open IM window, message "User is offline";
Send IM, no "user offline" message displayed;
Blue "xxx is online" appears and name goes bold in the list

This is a royal pain and I hope it can be resolved with a degree of urgency.

The bug is back and worse than last time.
Now IM's are routed to my email account as if I was offline while I am online.
IM's I send appear to go nowhere.
Friends list not working. Offline friends now remain "online" as well and online friends not appearing "online".
Last night IM's received during teleports went straight to email.
Also have got in game IM's from up to 24 hours in the past despite having been online within that 24 hours.
In short...
Badly Borked!

I was just able to repro this – logged in to Ubutu (sim3948.angni.lindenlab.com) and I don't see anyone on my Friends list online.

TLA Vollmar added a comment - 24/May/07 03:34 PM
This may sounds dumb, but has anyone tried clearing their cache? I did a tp-quit-relog cycle for about 4 different sims (don't recall the names), and the friends list immediately displayed all friends (as offline) as soon as I logged in. Clearing the cache resulted in a lengthy delay in the friends list as it populated with avatar names, at which point they correctly showed on/offline.

If it's just coincidence, I apologize for the red herring.

kelly linden added a comment - 24/May/07 03:35 PM
I am NOT brushing any of this off, and will leave this open for now but here is my initial assessment:

Friends list relies on backbone to get online status. Previously it didn't matter whether backbone was loaded or not, friends list wouldn't work because of a bug in how the simulator was requesting the online status of your friends - essentially any friends list of any significant length would always time out before any results were received. This bug I believe is fixed, and the lack of complaints over the weekend I think support this.

With 1.16 there are a couple of issues, a simulator crash we have a fix for internally and ... backbone load is off the charts. This is probably related to some changes to make group IMs faster but the investigation is still in progress. Because the backbone load is so high ..... presence requests for friends are timing out again - along with other issues.

Once we have a handle of the load issue I will be able to better investigate if there is some other issue here.

This would explain the problems with the Friends conference not working or failing as reported, : https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-841.

Thank you for the explanation.

Gillian Waldman added a comment - 24/May/07 06:12 PM
Adding my vote and comment. Signing in, no one appears online and website shows no friends online - even when I stand in front of three of them. After being in world for a while, new friends logging in will show up on the list. However, IMs between people showing as offline who are really online often fail - collapsing a major form of communication because there is no way to speak with them privately.

Gillian Waldman added a comment - 24/May/07 06:16 PM
Sorry, I should have added - I always log in at my home sim of Aquilae. But the issue follows me around regardless of location. No friends show as online and even those who are - IMs to them often (but not always) fail and they are routed to e-mail even when their avatar is in front of me.

Elrik Merlin added a comment - 25/May/07 05:07 AM
This situation is now worse than I have ever seen it in the last two months and worse today than yesterday. I can endorse all the comments made previously: Online friends status is erroneous in both directions; IMing results in a friend who is actually online being revealed as such BUT during a conversation suddenly IMs divert to email and sender sees offline message. Friends Conference appears to have failed in some indefinable way.

One might suggest in the interim that friends online status/personal IM is SO CRITICAL that it should be prioritized over group comms which are generally event etc promotion for a future occurrence and can afford delays, ie these indicators and personal comms should pre-empt processor time by being assigned a high priority (or whatever that implies in real terms). The importance of these features is up there with financial transactions for many people - in fact for me they are MORE important.

zlad voom added a comment - 25/May/07 10:41 AM
have that bug since the recent update to Second Life 1.16.0 (5).
When log in all friends are offline, after the first IM the contact change to online.

Tex Armistice added a comment - 26/May/07 12:10 PM
Today, 5/26/07, using 1.16.0 (5), I noticed the following behaviour. While the friends list is mostly working for me right now (except the web version), I noticed the following sequence.

I am in an IM session with my friend "Joe Smith". They log off.
Chat shows Joe Smith is Offline

My friends list still shows them online. I send a goodbye IM after they log off.
Chat shows Joe Smith is Online However, now they are not shown as online in the friends list.

I send a second goodbye IM
Chat shows Joe Smith is Offline. They still show up as offline in the friends list which is correct.

Not seeing new reports; this should be resolved following what was described in:

checks Friends list online, whew, I can see 'em!

Marcuw Schnook added a comment - 06/Jun/07 11:38 PM
Nope...

Not resolved. Since last maintenance update (yesterday), I login....

I get message from friends online.
When I reply, they are shown as offline (and with the annoying message it's being send to email and such).

And also, same person gets to see the same about me (being offline), whereas I'm 100% sure I'm logged in

Sadako Shikami added a comment - 07/Jun/07 08:56 PM
Right now, at 9:52pm SLT ... the Friends list is BLANK. A white field. Sometimes, instead of a name, "(waiting)" will load, in bold. I'm standing with friends in Sumedho, and Ratmaw. Same happened in Whitlock.

This started at the same time my Linden balance disappeared and showed only the word "Loading" in green ... as well as all teleports failing.

Cleared cache, relogged, relogged directly into several different sims from mainland to islands to new islands. Same problems.

maybe add a refresh button so users can re-load the initial pull of friends online when it fails? update seems to work somewhat better but the initial pull is failing.

Yes - all my friends are alledgedly offline - including the ones displayed as online in their profile, or standing in front on me.

it happens, not consistently, not in any particular sim, time or computer, completely vague, probably a network deal, as mentioned above, the suggestion to have a manual refresh button, kludge as it is, is better than no friends listed as online at all. O

Latest optional viewer, all last nite had the same problem no matter what sim I was in. Friends list was blank and only populated as people crashed and relogged. LOL Even avies standing in front of me were shown as offline.

What's interesting tho is that I run a group that most of my core group of friends are in and they showed up online in the group but not the friends list.

This has been so royally borked for so long that I can't remember the last time it actually WORKED right anymore.

I have 40 on my friends list, and it's almost never correct. I log in and out often through Lunalis, but I see the same problem elsewhere. Sometimes it shows up mostly-properly after a relog (which gives a point to the timeout theory) but often THAT doesn't even work. Sometimes nobody shows up as being online, even when there's a dozen that really are - and sometimes it's a mix of incorrect online/offline status reporting (some reported as being offline when they're online AND some reported as being online when they're offline).

I resort to pulling up profiles and looking on those, as that is usually right. But, sometimes Profiles come up with "waiting" and no details and stay that way for long periods of time (database load issues?).

Sometimes I can IM someone who's online and they get the message, and show up as being online. Sometimes they don't.

I'm about to the point where I'm going to make my own status widget - I mean, it can't be any worse, right?

PLEASE add a refresh feature to friends list.

imsaho fleury added a comment - 09/Jul/07 05:26 AM
My observations on this are:
a) The web friends list appears to be more reliable than the SL one (although not 100% reliable)
b) Frequency is about 1 in 5 logins work (when comparing Web against SL)
c) I do not always get notified if a friend comes online, but 'usually' get notified if he then goes offline. In other words .. the first time I know when a friend has been online is when they go offline!. However .. see below
d) I occasionally do not get notified when a friend in my friends list goes offline. .. i.e they appear to be still online when I know that they have logged off . An IM usually resets this. However, see below
e) An IM to an invisible friend usually kicks the friendslist notification, but not always. I have occasionally been talking to a friend in IM who stays listed offline.

Given the length of time this has been a high priority unfixed item, i would assume that the cause is unknown or it is difficult to fix. Would therefore suggest the following...
a) Linden provides some explanation of the problem in jira at a minimum, and if possible in official blog
b) Linden implements the workaround suggested .. a manual refresh.. or a reason why this would not work
c) If someone came up with a more reliable third party widget I would buy it!!!

I just wanted to add I see this time to time – we've had internal discussions re: reworking communications systems like this so they're a lot more robust in the future. Our devs know, and I'll ask them about these most recent requests (to verify if they're feasible, and wouldn't impose more undue load on the system).

I realize it's terribly frustrating in the meantime, and it's not that we don't want to do something about it because it's a widespread problem noticed by many of us, but its eventual (and hoped for) resolution may be a much bigger project, which we'll share news of as it comes along. Your reminders of how much you'd like to see this fix I can totally relate to.

We sure don't want to leave you in the dark, so let me see what more info we can get you re: Friends list, so at least you know what's going on. Thanks for your patience, and for your observations.

Matthew Dowd added a comment - 09/Jul/07 10:14 AM
Torley,

I'd say that the times I log on and friends online status does not display is more frequent that the times I log on and they do display.

It also seems to be slow to update to show someone has gone offline. A number of times someone is displaying as online only to immediately go offline when you attempt to IM.

Whilst I realise this may not be an easy fix, as mentioned above, for a social interactive environment, sensing presence seems somewhat fundamental.

Torley Linden added a comment - 09/Jul/07 10:30 AM
^ I totally concur that good communication is fundamental, and breakdowns like this, group IMs, group notices, etc. not working lead to compounded confusion and other problems.

Also of note, I checked our older bug tracker queue, and we've had about 30 complaints of this not working right in the last 2 weeks, which is better than before (when this issue was at its hottest), but as noticed by you guys, still a problem.

tasja demina added a comment - 10/Jul/07 02:48 AM
The only one who doesn't show up as online in my friends list in SL is my partner: she is the only one who is allowed to see me on the map and edit my items too. Maybe that is an indication to the problem?

SueNH2 Wise added a comment - 12/Jul/07 09:42 AM
I have been dealing with this issue for only the past few weeks, but it seems to be a problem more than half the time I log on. I agree that it is not as major an issue as crashes, but since I seem to be pretty immune to those, a lack of a working friends list is a constant irritant. Most of my close friends are suffering from the same problem. We tend to say unkind things about Linden Labs when it occurs, said in jest, but with an underlying sense of anger that this has not been resolved after this much time.

So... good luck with the fixes, I look forward to getting beyond this issue and sailing smoothly thru my second life,

Thanks

Jake Linden added a comment - 12/Jul/07 11:16 AM
OK, so I'm looking into this since it's obviously a bug of much contention. You can't have much of a second life if you can't see anyone to share it with.

Kelly and I have been talking about approaches to fixing this - the code as it stands should work correctly because in many circumstances it does. However, the code behind this is pretty knarly and has many places of potential failure, so Kelly and I have come up with a new way to deal with this (based on how we do group online presence reporting), using our new back bone system the way it should be used.

With a view to doing that, I have a couple of questions for you guys.

1) When you know someone is on line, even though the friends list says they are not, do they show up as online in the groups list (assuming you know they are subscribed to one of the same groups as you)? The code that the groups uses to determine online presence is actually different from the code that the friends list uses (it's older code and also the friends list returns a lot more information regarding the friends themselves than the groups list does - that just has enough to say "this person is online or not". The friends list has information about where they are so you can IM them etc). From what we've observed, the groups stuff works when the friends list doesn't - it would be nice of you guys could confirm this.

2) When you initially log on and someone is not reported online (because they aren't), is the system updating when they do log on? What I'm saying if either the friends list says everyone is off line, then a friend logs on and it updates and says they are online, or they were online, the friends list says they aren't - they relog - does it show up correctly then? Again the code that gets the initial list of friends and interrogates them to see if they are online or not is not the same system that reports a friend has logged on (or off) - it uses some of the same paths but it's not entirely the same.

3) Are we seeing an initial friends list situation where select people are not being reported as online, or everyone?

4) What does it take for a friend you know is online to show up as online in the friends list if they are initially not shown?

The answers to this will help up determine exactly what's broken and whether we can fix it or whether it'll be easier to just try a new way of doing it.

Either way, I want you guys to know we are on this - it's a top priority with LL.

Jake

If this helps...

I have various scripts using llRequestAgentData to check if people are online. And they do not seem to be subject to this problem. I can tell that people are online even though Friends doesn't know by checking with llRequestAgentData. Obviously the code behind it is different. Doing this check does not force the Friends list to correct itself (no reason it should).

Hi Jake,
Disclaimer: these are all from my experience only
Re Q1: yes in my case. Friendslist empty, but people do show up online in groups.
Re Q2: yes again. Can have empty friendslist, but people who log on after me will appear correctly.
Re Q3: usually if my friendslist is borked, it is completely empty until friends log on or relog.
Re Q4: generally IM PLUS reply will do the job. One-way IM usually not enough.
Also BTW, I've noticed that sometimes me relogging will also suddenly heal friendslist.
Hope this helps.

@ Jake Linden.

1 Yes
2) for me, yes it is
3) most of the time select people, once in a wile all when first logging on. Iming friends seems to cause the system to update to current status for that friend being IMed.
4) A. Iming that friend, B. when a friend relogs.

i'v noticed another issue popping up, I added a new friend to my list, for the first three days she showed up as online IMed or relogged. then suddenly she was no longer showing up as online evan though she was, IMing didn't update the system nor did her relogging, evan though I still had her on my list the system was acting as though she never was on my list, or dropped off for no reason, (Missing or lost data ?) I manualy re-added her via the add button in the friends list window, this seemed to clear this up.

Hope this helps

Jake Linden added a comment - 13/Aug/07 05:34 PM
Ok, I submitted some code that should make this better.

There are two places where the issue could be, and I basically completely replaced one side. If this persists - and I need all of you here who commented to keep watching for this once the code is released - then I'll reopen this and look at the other issue.

Torley, can you let everyone know when this code goes live? Thanks

Eloise Pasteur added a comment - 13/Aug/07 05:54 PM
I have many of the same issues as reported here. I also have a slight twist to them...

With my partner, or one of a small group of people whom I routinely IM very quickly when I see them log on, fairly often (not always, but usually, about 90% of the time), I get the "online" notification, IM them, and they get reported as offline straight away.

Occasionally this is a crash, but almost all of the time they are actually online, but sending an IM results in this offline notification, sending another reverses it. For most of these people I have a scripted "online checker" available, which usually confirms they didn't actually crash, it is an issue in the presence reporting in SL to the client.

Anyway I found a very simple workaround that up to now works 100% for me. Simply checking or unchecking the option "can see my online status" makes my friend list available

Also when people pay me or send me an object or notecard that to doesn't reach me till I relog, again in certain sims, mostly mainland it seems. Lunaris sim is one that seems to be effected by this as others besides myself have expierenced this bug. lol, this maybe in another post or something but JIRA is running slow for me and since this is related I posted here!

azoth amat added a comment - 04/Nov/07 09:00 AM
I just confirmed that the workaround reported above works for me as well – if I see the usual list of two or three "(waiting)" friends, if I then change the checkbox for "can see my online status" for one of them (at random), the list populates with my friends. I can then change the checkbox back to its original state.

I figured this might (a) help others who are having the problem, and (b) help the Lindens debug it.

This issue has been non-stop for me for months and months. And still is even today.

Usually friends on my list are missing from my list entirely. Often those who do show, show incorrect status.

One thing I have found that will usually but not always cause a refresh of the entire friends list is to pick a friend, give him/her access rights to edit my objects. And then remove those rights to return to status quo. (or remove edit perms if they already exist and then restore them).

Usually as soon as I do this, the entire friends list will refesh. Missing friends will reappear - no! they did not delete me from their list!!! Be still my beating heart! Other friends will now suddenly be online.

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 01/Jan/08 11:07 AM
I realize it's a frustrating bug but there is no way this is critical, it probably should be major but to be on the safe side I'm only lowering it down to critical.

azoth amat added a comment - 01/Jan/08 11:38 AM
I agree this is not critical; there's no crash, no permanent loss of data, and even for there observed inconvenient behavior, there's an easy and reliable workaround (change an access checkbox for a visible listing – even a "waiting" one – and then change it back).

azoth amat added a comment - 01/Jan/08 11:39 AM
"Major" severity seems to cover this well, per previous comments. I could even argue for "normal". It's annoying, but no data loss plus easy workaround is somewhere below "critical".

lacie jewell added a comment - 01/Jan/08 01:29 PM
I am not familiar with precisely what is meant by "Major" versus "normal". But it seems to me that
  • an issue that is so prevalent as this issue has been
  • that while itself not criticial, but which due to the fragile nature of relationships, could have serious consequences in many SL relationships (why didn't you IM me? uh-huh sure you couldn't see me online...)
  • which has persisted for 9 months

Has long since outlived "normal" status. Imagine a in/outboard IRL at a business that was often inaccurate. Critical? No. But adverse consequences for the business and its employees? Yes. And if it continued for 9 months . . .

Wyvern Carter added a comment - 29/Jan/08 02:46 PM
All of those asking for a refresh button for the friends list, I noticed there is a related request about a refresh option on https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1686 .

azoth amat added a comment - 06/Feb/08 09:44 PM
Yesterday's Windlight release (79815) invalidated the workaround I reported, in which toggling one of the visibility checkboxes for a "waiting" entry in the friends list would make the full list refresh with real names immediately. In the new release, there are checkboxes for each user row, and toggling them does not trigger a refresh, of the whole list or even of that user.

That workaround made this bug tolerable; now it's back to crippling.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 06/Feb/08 11:14 PM
The problem seems to be especially bad in 1.19.0.
  • When a friend IMs you, it no longer fixes their name.
  • Toggling the checboxes does nothing.
  • The entire list is affected.

The only cure from what I can tell is to relog and hope it fixes itself when you login next.

Also, random observation: we have (hippos) on our friends list now?

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 07/Feb/08 09:26 PM
Is this happening only when people are clearing their caches? Or aside from that?

Anecdotally, I'd say it also occurs without clearing the cache, but as I was just made aware that clearing your cache causes this, I can't trust my memory to be sure.

Lola Machin added a comment - 08/Feb/08 09:37 AM
Clearing the cache.. right.. mm.. is that the error, it means that the server does not send the information anymore and the viewer is stucked waiting. Cache is called cache because it store information to minimize the transaction traffic between the viewer and the server. As such, the new viewer release 1.19.0 is NOT communicating with the server because it was the viewer that changed, not the server code.
sighs

I have had the same problem after a crash from the last Windlight Viewer. After relogin my whole friendslist shown (waiting) or (hippos) (anyone knows what "hippos" mean?).
I've tried all things, cleaning cache, reinstallation, also i've used the regular viewer and the release candidate - but nothing, the friendslist was still borke.

Then i've pleased a friend to remove me from the friends list and add me again. After this, this one person was shown in my friendslist. After a relog the Friendslist was back. Thats the only workaround i know but that can't be a permanent situation.

And i agree to many other comments, this problem IS critical. Most of us aren't lonesome cowboys and happy when they can build or grief.

Would be the same if your telephone book shows only "0000000000" instead of the phone number and the directory assistance tells you "i can't tell you the number, there is a problem in our database. we know that problem, but we haven't a fix for it. Write a snail mail to vote for this problem". (the last part is nearly the same from a supportticket answer, "vote" for this problem).

Blue Revolution added a comment - 12/Feb/08 09:29 AM
I know of two people currently experiencing this problem. One on Mac and one on Windows.

I had previously tried Damona's suggestion above with my friend. I dropped him from friends list and added him. I then showed up on his friends list. However when he relogged, his friends list was back to all waiting and no names. One note, he did delete all his calling cards at some point, only has four now.

However my friend on Mac didn't delete her calling cards and she is still having this problem.

Evangeline Biedermann added a comment - 12/Feb/08 09:30 AM
I have not seen my Friends List populated on either Windlight nor the Release Candidate viewers since they got upgraded ..the names in the 'waiting' fields are not even in alphabetical order..so i have to use groups or go to the website to see if anyone and who is online...which is by now ..over a week later ..getting beyond annoying...

I have redownloaded and reinstalled the viewers and my cache is being cleared everytime i relog

..the addition of a new friend to the list has only given me their name in the list for a duration of about 2 hrs..then it just vanishes..to be replaced by 'waiting' or 'hippos' if i'm lucky

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 12/Feb/08 04:43 PM
Evangeline: try disabling the clear cache on each login option. That should restore your friends list when you log back in. Sorry, it seems relogging without clearing your cache is the only known fix for 1.19.0.

Are names changing to (waiting) when you relog, or does it also happen when you're in the middle of a session (i.e. without logging out at all)?

Rascal Ratelle added a comment - 20/Feb/08 08:29 PM

McCabe, no, name revert to 'waiting' and 'hippos' after case is cleared. relogging seems to clear that up, but offline friends still show up as online.

My friends list always shows "waiting" in the windlight viewer. No names, even when friends log in and ott. I can still see that activeity in open chat window and the blue pop up. But the friends list continues to show "waiting" wher an avitars name is supposed to be. This continues throughout my entire log on. I have just downloaded "dazzle" and the same problem is there too. I agree that this is a major issue for an online social and ecconomic community. This has been an issue for long time and it appears that many people are affected by it, so why has it not been fixed?

In the 1.19.0 (5) viewer my friends list will not load I have try everything I have cleared cache have tried different region's tried completely uninstalling the SL software and reinstalling. I made sure my calling cards were loaded everything I try fails.

I've had this same problem in Windlight and Dazzle as well. The friends list shows all of the different people where the names should be either says "hippos" or "waiting" and will not load.

As I was saying In 1.18.5 (3) Also often more times then not my friends list would say Hippos or waiting but I could put a check on one of the friends list options like let someone see me on the map and it would force load the friends list. but this will not work in 1.19.0 (5)

I have try every thing I could think of in 1.19.0 (5) to get the friends list to load and it won't

I cleared cache set bandwidth to the max uninstalled SL and reinstalled it.

Tryed my alt account, nothing worked. I had to revert back to 1.18.5 (3) where I can force load my friends list.

I really want to use 1.19.0 (5), but I can't go with out seeing who's online as I do allot of business stuff in SL. and that is really going to hurt if I can't see my contacts online.

This is the Solution I got in my ticket and this does not work. "Thanks for your inquiry. Please try to clear cache->relog->pick a name on the friendslist and toggle "show online" status off. Then turn it "on" again. After that please wait a minute and relog again.
That should hopefully remove the problem"

This solution provided doesn't work for me in The 19.0 viewers. It only works for me in the 18.5 viewer.

I tried that and all its saying is the same as it has been shows all of the people but says "waiting" or "Hippos" where the name should be.

I'm stuck using the 18.5 viewer until there is a solution for this that will work.

This an Majory Issue that needs addressed badly.

Hey for all of you who are having problems with the friends list not loading in the 19.0 viewer I had the exact same troubles. I've found that the Second Life 1.19.1 (0) Mar 5 2008 17:51:19 (Second Life Release Candidate) has the friends list issues fixed it loads every time.

so if your having problems and still in the 19.0 viewer download the Second Life 1.19.1 (0) Mar 5 2008 17:51:19 (Second Life Release Candidate) and your problems should be fixed!

Come on, Lindens...this bug has been open for months, it's gotten worse with recent releases, and it interferes with a core aspect of SL (social connections). It can't be much more complicated than an asynchronous database lookup. Please stop work on all the eye candy projects (dazzle, windlight, etc) and spend a month fixing this and similar fundamental problems (e.g., memory leaks). It will do no good to have pretty graphics if nobody is around to see them.

I have downloaded the latest version of the viewer and cleared the cache both with SL and Internet Explorer.... the friends list is just NOT working on the website.

This is part of a larger privacy issue that included the ability to choose which friends can see me when I am in SL and the big loophole - the fact that the IM system does not "respect" the wish to be seen as offline.

I understand that Linden Labs' staff may have an issue with the "honesty" of reporting someone as offline when they are, in fact, in world. This can be easily solved by simply reporting that this person "appears to be offline"

After downloading the latest RC Client (1.19.1) I noticed that my friends list, which was borked up to that point, has no worked again each time I have logged in. After a somewhat unscientific survey on the SL Forums ( http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=245839 ) it may well be that the issue has been resolved.

I would suggest that people that are having the issue with the latest Client (1.19.0) try downloading the release candidate (it doesn't overwrite the regular release - you can easily go back to it) and see whether the issue has been fixed, and post their experiences to here or the above-linked forum post.

Tried it
still noticing this PRESENCE issues

offline still shows as online and vice versa,

your 'fix' does NOT work for every one.this bug should have been fixed months ago,
but instead LL focuses more on features and aesthetics.

and then undermine it's importance by lowering it's priority level.

Relogging no longer works in main client.

Not only am I getting waiting or hippos on my own friendlist but my friends report that they frequently don't see the alert that I am online. I have noticed this myself that the alert comes only after we have begun an im. This is plainly screwed up.

Those of you still seeing this, would you please post with:

1) your OS,
2) what brand and model DSL modem/cablemodem modem you're using,
3) which ISP (internet provider) you use,
4) what viewer version you're using,
5) how frequently this happens (every time, frequently, occasionally, just once)

If you aren't comfortable posting this publicly, please write a brief note to support asking them to attach the information to this JIRA.

Getting some aggregate data would really help diagnose this, since we can't see the problem from the server end.

Umm ..... how can you justify a showstopper issue with nearly 300 votes being resolved? To answer the questions though ...

1) your OS
MacOS ..... both 10.3 and 10.5

2) what brand and model DSL modem/cablemodem modem you're using,
Westel model 6110

3) which ISP (internet provider) you use,
Verizon

4) what viewer version you're using,
The 10.3 machine has 1.19.0.5, the 10.5 has the nicholaz version of 1.19.1.4, but I believe I also saw it in 1.18 and the RC of 1.20

5) how frequently this happens (every time, frequently, occasionally, just once)
extremely frequently (almost every time) ..... every once in awhile though I see a list that is not mostly filled with entries that are still loading

Kara, the "resolved" label used by JIRA is misleading. If you look, the "resolution status" is "needs more info." This doesn't mean the issue has been closed, it means we're soliciting input to help find the problem.
