Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-13609

 Description  « Hide
Certain objects are failing to send outgoing or object to object scripted email. This doesn't seem to be predictable. It worked for months previously, but now, for particular objects this is failing. It doesn't appear to be email frequency blocking (unless the parameters for that have changed?). Resetting scripts has no effect.

When the sim containing the receiving object is restarted, then the emails floww through. It dowes appear that the "stuck" emails are not delivered though upon restart.

As far I can tell, all objects are now failing and irrespective of simulator. I've tested TyroTech WASP Control HUD v1.02, MSR HUD 1.2.146, SIM-Radar Ultra-Edition 8.4c, Triple Labs Security System, and simstrike 2.36. It doesn't matter which simulator, but I've tested in Eastfield, Glockler, Alyssa, Combat (sandbox) Rausch, and Combat (sandbox) - Blue Team's HQ. The blog seems to imply a few rebellious objects but I believe that understates the scope of the problem. I believe it's all objects and everywhere. Priority raised.

As an addendum, I've noticed that sometimes the email actually gets thru and sometimes it doesn't. 10 minutes ago, things started to work again, than they stopped.

Addendum 2: It's working again (2003 SLT)- let's hope it doesn't go down again.

I own Flotsam Beach, where our 7Seas Fishing Game (which works entirely on inter object email) is housed. I ran some tests using simple email scripts and determined that emails are going out, but no email is coming in. It doesn't matter what object is doing the mailing; my previously rezzed servers or brand new simple test case programs I rezzed on the fly. Nothing comes in. It's been this way since last night. Restarts do NOT help the issue.

You can find the 7Seas Master Server and a number of objects called Indirect Mailer (that handle the mails, to get around email throttling limits) at Flotsam Beach, 63, 106, 145. I've put in two support tickets on the issue, #4051-4694784 and #4051-4695203.

Frankly, email has been unreliable since we started this project over a month ago. We're giving up on it and moving to HTTP and an offsite database. It seems silly that we have to make a web enabled database application when there's a perfectly good inter object communications command, but since it was randomly failing in certain sims even before this latest mess, it's all we can do to keep this thing stable.

Iv had this problem starting over the last 24 hours with MSR HUD 1.2.146 and SIM-Radar Ultra-Edition 8.4c (watching remote sims), effected regions are Angel Haven, Light Haven, Dark Haven, Peril Isle and Counter GOR.

Broken again 4-14-08

[UPDATE: Working now as of 8pm]

Below is attached the text from my support ticket: Sim referenced is Rillanon

-----------------------------------

The mail queue for this sim is hanging. A sim restart will force the delivery of items pending, but all new mail to objects on this sim fail to deliver until the sim is restarted again.

This issues started occuring April 10th, at around 9:58 PM

The sim was restarted around 9:10 am this morning and again around 10:40 am

Delivery status / issues can be tracked at the following URL:

http://www.mysldev.com/graphs/showgraph.php?action=email

An e-mail test is generated once every 15 minutes.

NOTE: This is external -> internal e-mail, I do not yet have an internal -> internal test module setup to test mail sending from one Sim to Another.

As of 4:52 PM April 11th this is still an issue.

Sim has been restarted twice more since the origional ticket was submitted.

Around 1:45 pm and again at 4:46 pm

The sim was again restarted around 7:40 pm

Between 1 pm and 2pm the messages were not accepted by the mail server and the following message was returned:

<mailtolsl@data.agni.lindenlab.com> (expanded from

The object "Kirra's Tools Update Server" (Key: 53b5e2fe-6157-5e09-7477-1d7655bda6b1) located in Sim "Baekdu" at (230, 138, 74), owned by me, fails to receive mail from my HUD attachment while I am in Sim "Guanacaste", but can receive mail from my HUD attachment, when I am in the same Sim (Baekdu).

Five other of my update servers, located in other sims (Eldora (92, 71),Gariepy (245, 10), Rethymno (10, 161), Saint Clair (49, 145), and Thunberg (147, 253)), running IDENTICAL code can receive mail from my HUD attachment just fine, from both their local sim and Guanacaste. In other words, these 5 can receive cross-sim email, my update serve in Baekdu cannot.

I have similar problems of objects not communicating with other objects as noted on this issue, in the regions Khisanth, Third Space, Morkeleb.
Also attachments on my AV, detaching while TPing and scripts failing to load or rezzed objects on land needing to be taken into inventory then rezzed again a few times to have the scripts work, only to stop working a while later.
These problems have been going on a few days!
Bring on the rolling restarts and Apes with Bone Hammers (_)

It's the same with HippoRent boxes, server and vendors combos.
While Andy Enfield (the creator) did not have an issue at the time when and where he tested, it has kept failing on me for the past 6 weeks communicating from either Mauve to Blue or Hyboria, Dalton & Ambat to Nonantola
While remote notecards are being delivered from the server when clicking on a box, the remote configuration loading via email fails and so does the vendors getting data from the HippoRent servers. It gets some rentals eventually but not all, loading only a partial amount to the vendor.

I have an item that does not seem to be sending outbound emails if someone wanted to take a look at it:

At

"Tech Expo 101.054, 247.028, 244.933"

the object named:

"GlobalVend Vendor - Dance Foundry"

is sending email to:

"Bloodlines 102.359, 163.645, 47.774"

the object named:

"Dance Foundry vendor Server"

All of the rest of my vendors have gone online, and the server is responding to emails from other vendors, this single vendor seems to have stopped sending outbound email, even after a reset.

Vendor name: Sky Everett Designs-Furniture v. BOSL.

Island/vendor location: L'Utopie 69,125,701

I'm using a newly released vendor which was functioning without incident just a few hours ago. I logged back into to Slife at 10:30 (sl time) to find the vendor not responding. I can't load anything into the contents or click to activate. Since then, I've relogged several times, finding my inventory in a perpetual 'loading' mode and my avatar beautifully Ruthed.

Whoever closed the issue as contact support should have read the SL blog. It said, "We're still getting a few reports of rebellious objects which refuse to participate in object-to-object email. If you are the owner of such an object, please visit https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-688 and comment with as much detail as you're willing to share of: The object name, the originating region/coordinates, and the destination region/coordinates." Please dont' close it unless Linden fixes it - thanks.

Bryon Ruxton added a comment - 11/Apr/08 11:18 PM - edited
Dior, we feel your pain but please be on topic and don't use JIRA and change issues until you know what you are doing please, especially when it come to Workflow Action links. If you want to help, vote for issues to show that you want them and SL to be fixed. Thank you

Added: No Seven it's far from fixed, the resolve was a user mistake...
They might as well shut SL down for a week at this point...

Seven Shikami added a comment - 11/Apr/08 11:37 PM
Soooo... is the issue resolved or reopened? It was marked Resolved earlier... and my fishing game's server seems to be responding to email again, so I was assuming all was clear and already told my subscribers to restart their clients. What's going on? I thought only a Linden could mark it closed, anyway...

Perhaps if Linden Lab had seen fit to leave the original blog post regarding this issue open to user COMMENTS... you might have had enough feedback from the beginning to have already solved this issue. What is the company afraid of... feedback?

I would wager your object to object email problems are caused by exactly the same thing that is causing failure in group IMs, group notices, lost inventory, and other connectivity and database problems: poor network management and communications, poor database structure and handling, glitchy server code. There's just so much messed up that has gone so long without being debugged, it's starting to affect everything (just as predicted long ago when we discussed issues of SL doubling and tripling in size. This stuff should have been fixed while the board was still under 1000 sims).

Other email comms between these two regions are flowing ok now.

Deitide has restarted and comms are re-established, though a different link has broken after another region rebooted. If that doesn't recover soon I'll put details here.

Sascha Vandyke added a comment - 12/Apr/08 06:44 AM
Well first you said contact support, then say open a ticket, now here, better open blog next time. This issue started somehow in the night to the 11th for me. But at least it looks like it is working now again. I had several vendors out of my sim where my servers are not working, most strangely not all, so it is not as simple as I thought that maybe only the mail out of region is affected. Vendors in the same region still worked with e-mail, but some outside not, no matter from which server the e-mail was sent. But some did, even in a region where others didn't.

Marcoh Larsen added a comment - 12/Apr/08 07:35 AM
I've resetted all JEVN-servers, but there are still a few JEVN-vendor which still doesn't connect to the JEVN-server:

Vendor: The Featured Product (257141.4, 259995.4, 35.0 in Agapema)
Server: SelfMadeThings (257153.9, 260009.8, 500.9 in Agapema)

I am currently resetting all vendor-scripts. When there are more vendors which cannot connect I'll add them here.

Ive reverified that I am sending it to the correct key, even re-rezzed the prim to get a new key. Still get this error.
I was just making a quick tool that would IM me when i am in world when i get a new email by having my rl email auto-forward to this inworld scripted prim and it would IM me if i am online with the subject of the email.
But, when it tries to forward it, it gets the above reply and I do not receive the email inworld.
The sim the object is located in is Tu Amor. Script performance is around 1,800, as i have seen it not receive emails when the script performance goes up over 100,000.

I'm using a subscriber kiosk system with the master unit located in my workshop in Gilbut (approx 63, 172, 396) and the affected slave unit on Cassiopeia Isle (69, 128, 21). I have just rezzed a new kiosk at my remote location and the slave unit cannot connect to the master unit.

EDIT: This problem doesn't affect the slave unit I have located elsewhere in the same sim as the master unit. Just the one located on Cassiopeia Isle.

EDIT #2: This started working again around midnight SLT. Good work.

EDIT #3: And the next day it's broken again.

Most of my boards in various sims are not picking up any updates from my servers in the SoulManager sim. I'm aware that sometimes e-mail is slow, but even after several hours, nothing seems to communicate. Resetting scripts doesn't help either.

Rezzing a new server and trying to connect to that doesn't work either.

Servers are located in SoulManager, boards in the following sims (partial list) : SoulManager, Gyaltsen, Quiet Mile, Dewey, Dent, Hazeldean.

I'm having problems with the communication within the JEVN vending system.
Servers and Vendors, they just don't communicate with eachother!!

Servers are in regions Rokola and Warung (and my partner with same system and same probs in Bakoa).
Vendors are in Rokola, Warung, ROMA, ROMA Subura, Egypt Nile Valley, Al Andalus Generalife and The Roman Empire.

I've spoken to the JEVN system designers, they said to ask for region restarts.
The region owner restarted all 3 of the regiones mentioned (where the severs are).

After that one server/vendor combination in Warung seemed to work, but after a couple of minutes it got the same problems as before: no communication between vendor and server, not in any direction.

An example of one of the server/vendor combination I have at Warung 28, 146, 22
The object names are:

  • ARS AVETE Texture Vendor (row s2)
  • AA Texture Server 2

apr 28: last week's midweek resets ("[Update Wednesday @ 9:15pm] A slight and subtle wrinkle during the deploy left some object-to-object emails non-functional. The responsible systems have gotten a stern talking to, and this service should be operational again.") - seemed to work well, although the next day (thursday) one vendor then went right back out of service... since saturday's final rolling restarts, more vendors have failed again; most recent just a few minutes ago.

note that these are all remote boxes trying to call home to the very same box in centaur! so this for once ties all of them specifically to one key into another sim - i confirm that it is their messages do not reach centaur... it is not the case of them getting thru, then not being able to hear their replies from centaur.

sooo, either only centaur needs reset or all the following regions do...

affected regions:
Baker
Bug City
LaSalle
Afterglow

UPDATE may 1: i've email reports that a number of these offline vends have now come back up ) ... of course from region update/restart. has there been much tinkering with figuring out a fix for this problem? anything to expect from this update?

UPDATE may 10: after last week's updates/resets, i've only had one remote vend go offline (early in the week, late sunday/monday), that came back online after an hour... no problems since then!! tentatively i wonder... "solved"??

UPDATE may 20: ten more days now without a single outage!! looking good - quite possibly 'resolved' this time around for me. how about everyone else??

See my post of April 22 for the description of the problem.
But this time it's all in the same sim (Warung).

Since May 6, I'm having the same problems again: JEVN vendors not connecting to a specific server.
Making a vendor connect to another server works just fine.

Last time it took 3 days, a sim restart, and after that another day for the problem to 'disappear'. Since problems do not disappear by themselves.... something must have been 'fixed' on the way, but why don't we know that?
