I think this should be moved to SVC, as the main request is for content (other language OIs). The required changes to the server and viewer software are "only" technical. That is, if there are any such required changes: Note that there is already a bilingual Orientation Guide*. The same technique could be used for more languages.
*Official SL Volunteers can fetch it at SL Volunteer Orientation Island. To make it available to others when they can't find a volunteer, vote for Thanks for the input... first, as to moving it, I myself was undecided as to which was best, since it does involve a service change, determined by the viewer. (The key being to have the two work together.)
In the interests of receiving more input and increasing the chances it would be used, I am going to look into moving it. As regards the related issues... Providing the OI Hud in other languages would definitely be affected by this. You could have the huds at the OI's pre-set to use that OI's language. And providing a copy of the TOS in other languages (for reference only) would be a good thing for a dispenser at the OI's... in that OI's language. (Actually, providing a copy of the full TOS as a default item in the notecard inventory might be another good idea... it never hurts to give people a handy reference.) This feature is "do shit in SL based on user preferences". Therefore it's a service issue, not a viewer issue.
Providing a copy of the TOS in different languages other than American English (yes American, not British) would require a lawyer familiar with the laws of both California and the territory associated with the language in question. A straight up translation by someone who speaks perfect french but isn't a lawyer would probably produce an invalid legal document. Italian!!! Why not including italy too? and all more important languages in sl evaluated in %?
Actually, my idea would be to let residents choose what languages they speak as part of the joining process. Then sort the OIs by language and let residents start on 'their' native OI. This would help the initial communication between residents as well as making it easier for mentors to find new residents speaking their languages.
I am aware that there simply cannot be an OI for every language in existence, so this issue should be narrowed down to the most common languages in SL, according to stats. A translation of the viewer or Orientation Guide may follow, but better organisation of OIs is crucial imho. |
