Summary Meta-Issue: Improved Security / anti-griefer / landowner tools Meta-Issue: Improved Security and Governance (anti-abuse & anti-griefer tools/permissions)
Description There was a "Privacy and Security" meta-issue here : https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-241
However, SVC-241 read like the original issue was privacy, and security was only added later as an afterthought.

I added a few security issues there, but this brought the total number of issues that SVC-241 related to up to 28.

28 is probably too large for a single topic.
Plus there were some issues there (like MISC-420 which suggests letting land/estate owners ban residents by IP address) which are pro-security but some people object to on privacy grounds.
Even though, IMHO, MISC-420 can be done in a way which doesn't hurt privacy, it might confuse people to have proposals like that listed under the "pro-privacy" tab.

So I'm splitting the "Privacy" and "Security" issues, filing them under separate meta-issues.
I've left the privacy issues at SVC-241, and will be linking the security issues here.

Note that this is NOT the place to post about exploits or security bugs that pose a threat to Second Life.
For those, you should see the instructions on http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Security_issues

Instead, this meta-issue is for linking security-related feature suggestions, as well as minor bugs which don't pose substantial threats to Second Life.

The difference between the two is that Privacy is concerned with preventing other SL residents from seeing our private info/chats, while Security is concerned with preventing griefers ruining public events.

They are similar, but privacy is more focussed on keeping snoopers away from private information, whereas security is more about keeping griefers away from areas of land (and preferably from SL as a whole).

The difference between the two is that Privacy is concerned with preventing other SL residents from seeing our private info/chats, while Security is concerned with preventing griefers ruining public events.
Essentially, SVC-241 (the "privacy" proposal) is concerned about the security of our personal information, and SVC-456 (this "security" proposal) is concerned about the security of our property, such as land.

They are similar topics, but concerns about privacy typically revolve around personal information being leaked to strangers, and concerns about security typically revolve around griefers attacking clubs and other public spaces.

I added a few security issues to SVC-241, but this brought the total number of issues that it related to up to 28.
I then thought that 28 related issues is probably too many for a single topic.
Plus, there may be proposals which come up later and which truly do force us to choose between privacy and security. One might even argue that the "ID verification" system proposed by LL is one such proposal.

So I'm splitting the "Privacy" and "Security" issues, filing them under separate meta-issues.
I've left the privacy issues at SVC-241, and will be linking the security issues here at SVC-456.

Please note that JIRA is NOT the place to post about exploits or security bugs that pose a threat to Second Life.
For those, you should see the instructions on http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Security_issues

Instead, this meta-issue is for linking security-related feature suggestions, especially ones concerned with :
* How to prevent griefing in Second Life
* How to enable landowners to have more control over their land
* How to enable groups of landowners to form something resembling a resident "government".

The last issue, "resident government" may well deserve being split off into its own meta-issue. Feel free to do this if you can find sufficient JIRA proposals related to it which are NOT security-related. For the moment I'm leaving it here as improving security on estates/parcels requires giving landowners more control of their land, and this is one of the fundamental aims of the resident governance projects. Thus, for now, the two seem to go together.

One very useful feature would be the ability to turn off dialog popups. A common form of griefing includes repeated popups that come so fast you can't operate the GUI.

Until this is better addressed, LL is going to have a difficult time bringing more business into what may feel is a "bad neighborhood." I would point to the constant vandalism of the Edwards Campaign headquarters as one embarrassing example.

You cannot stop griefers from creating throw away accounts, but a subscription based system would certainly make a major dent in it. Blizzard requires payment info to be on file, even for free trial accounts. They still have issues, but not nearly to the same degree.

A few other suggestions:

*for any tool created, provide LSL functionality that can call it
*Sim-wide deletion of objects for a given AV as an estate tool
*parcel or sim option: throttle object rez rate
*parcel option: panic button: stops all rezzing, scripts, and object entry in one click. Adding the ability to stop collisions for a period of time would be helpful too
*increase the length of time "Freeze" lasts, figuring that you want a resident to be able to freeze the offender, AR them with screenshot and complete description of the encounter, then eject them from the parcel in question.
*ejecting someone from a parcel should auto-ban them from that parcel, even temporarily
*Advanced mute: completely remove another AV from your SL experience, right down scripts, objects, and collisions (yes, I know, no small task, that)
*Throttle the number of dialogs that can be received from a single source
*Throttle the number of inventory offers an AV can receive, whether that is a global number, AV based, or in regards to any single source.

Content Ratings system allows to bar unrated content from being rezzed, thus preventing a lot of griefer shenanigans - as a beneficial feature of allowing sim owners to choose the kind of content they allow to be rezzed into their sims. SVC-4181

Description
Put simply : we residents need better tools to deal with abuse in Second Life.

This means :
* Land options/permissions
* Estate options/permissions
* LSL calls
* Client options like true mute

With particular reference to the following problems :
* Denial of Service attacks (sim crashing, etc)
* Spam attacks (particle spam, chat spam, voice spam, IM spam, etc)
* Trolling attacks (harassment of particular individuals or places)
* Resource Abuse (using physical prims to cause sim lag, etc)
* Weapons abuse (orbitting, push in safe zones, caging, etc)

Relevant news articles :
* ACS Dreamland manager slams Linden Lab's response to griefing as inadequate, showing a lack of leadership and failure to give residents suitable tools, and dismisses attempts to ban griefers' accounts as a "worthless exercise" : http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2007/09/dreamland-slams.html (Sept 2007)
* Wikipedia article lists griefing and denial of service attacks as a major content problem within Second Life : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life_criticism (Sept 2007)
