I would like to suggest a service I believe LL should supply to residents to mutual benefit. As today for the first time I've experienced major scare of Inventory loss of one of my dearest projects, and I believe many other creators would agree there should be a data backup service provided by LL when it comes to content. I am aware there are products out there available to back up my creations on my HD, and I am quite surprised LL has not recognized the potential in this 'should-be' feature. I don't think it should be free, I would gladly pay for it like I pay for texture uploads (and often re-uploads), whether on a monthly basis per storage space used, or having a fixed fee for it....whichever way works out to best compensate efforts and balance satisfaction of both LL and the feature users.

BACKUP checkbox & pay fee button (let's say fee is calculated per prim number, or per linkset number, or whatever way sets the price fair) in Edit window- general tab for people who wish to back up their builds. If box checked, it would be logged somehow so in case of immediate inventory loss creator could submit 'send me my stuff' via some automated process....I am not a geequette, you work it out

Or 'backup inventory' where we can drag and drop things we would like to have backed up, and we pay per storage space used/time.

Again - I would be more at ease if my creations had a chance to be backed on a system that is taken care of by (who i hope are) professionals then on my overly abused HD, in lack of better terms.

I hope LL calls a nice internal meeting over this and sees it not just as a 'nagging for a featurette' but rather as potentially great solutions for us creators as well as a nice extra $ source for LL...

Just a thought anyway.

Since Mitch Kapor has often said that LL's revenue model is similar to a hosting company's, one could easily argue that LL ought to follow the path of the many hosting companies out there that offer premium backup services for additional fees.

Strongly agreed.

Agreed!

This would be a great add on to premium accounts. I don't have one and have no intention of ever upgrading because there isn't enough benefit in my opinion. However, if some sort of server side inventory backup existed, that might make me reconsider, along with other people in the same boat as me.

Absolutely agree with all the above. I'd be more than happy to pay a reasonable fee for this.

Agreed, great idea. This would be an excellent incentive for premium accounts, and/or as a pay-as-you-go service. Perhaps as a business model, premium accounts would get X amount of storage "free" (with their subscription), then a modest fee per MB/month above that level, or something along those lines. Maybe non-premiums could have the per MB/month, at a slightly higher rate.

Ancient news and idea. There is an extensive blog post in which Cory discussed this very thing ages ago and it was followed up on several occasions and in office hours by Hamilton Linden. At that time they actually encouraged private interests to develop a vault where assets could be stored.

Apparently it is still in the blog archives if you can find your way to them. There was a lot of hype about those new blogs but finding things like this have been made next to impossible.

It appears that the background (off-JIRA) chatter suggests that some non-premium accounts would upgrade if it meant that they had access to this service.

I have lost inventory before, not too bad for some some stuff, but a huge pain for no copy no transfer items that I paid a great deal of money for. it worth my investment to pay LL for a storage locker so to speak.

My thoughts.

If I pay for some object in second life, it becomes mine, and I then have a "real ownership" of that object (real and virtual).

Linden labs have total control of my object. They hold it for me. No matter what I do to change the object, they still hold it for me. If they are going to hold my property, then they have total responsibility for the care of my object. They have given me no choice in who takes care of my object. They then also have "total responsibility" if something happens to it.

It seems to me that they are not taking responsibility for anything other than collecting my money. If they loose my object, they are totally responsible to replace it. I do not care about the problems they have. They created the program, they want to be the sole caretakers of my objects, then they have sole responsibility for their care.

If I purchase a CD in real life, I can take it anywhere and play it on any machine I choose to put it into. In second life, I can only play my CD on their machine. That is an infringement on my rights of ownership to start with.

Everyone is very concerned with the rights of the creator, but no one seems to be concerned with my rights as the purchaser and current owner of the object. (I am also a creator) When I buy something in real life, I can do with it as I wish. If I buy a home, I can move it if I wish to anywhere in the world I wish. Here, I can only have it in second life. If they have that much control over my belongings, then they have total responsibility for the care of it. I see LL as only taking care of themselves. It is not that hard for them to create a master file of my belongings, record all changes to that file as they occur, and use it to restore anything from my inventory that goes missing.

Just because it may be difficult for them to implement such a tracking program for all inventories in SL, does not relieve them from the responsibility to do so.

How about lindens labs offering a service whereby inventory items are put onto cd/cds/dvds for those who want their items saved and then posted to them to be installed as required ?

My own personal feeling is that this should be offered free to premium account holders every month or so, with requests for duplicate cds being charged as extra.
