There should be an override option to allow us to log into and run SL even if you say our graphics card/driver isn't compatible. It should be our decision if it's good enough. Simply locking people out of their SL lives, groups, and businesses because their visual experience may be sub-par is simply ridiculous.

I waited 6 months to get internet access so I could join SL, got to enjoy it for over a year, and then simply couldn't use it again without getting a new driver/card, which are too advanced for my computer, requiring a new computer which I can't afford. I was doing just fine before you decided - for me - that what I was using wasn't good enough.

I've never had another online service, rpg, etc tell me i can't log in after I've already been using the same configuration. They just warn you and move on. If it doesn't work under the configuration, you can figure it out on your own. They don't lose customers by blocking them.

Add an override that we can do when we get the message, or change it to just a warning.

I do agree that a user choice should be allowed here, mainly because many people also use laptop computers.
People can not change the video card in their laptop, therefore someday SL could possibly make many laptops
totally unuseable on the service , with no choice but to go out and buy a new laptop, which hopefully they can afford
If they cant, and they only have a laptop, they are effectly banned from SL.

This is not a showstopper-priority issue. SL is a 3d environment which requires fairly robust graphics hardware to run well, and reasonably decent graphics hardware to run at all. The Intel 845GV onboard graphics processor in your PC is six years old, and obsolete. The SL website has minimum system requirements posted; the minimum is an Intel 945 integrated graphics chipset (which as you'll notice has a higher model number than your 845 chipset).

Doesn't the --noprobe command line option disable that check? I also agree we need the ability to override the decision of the viewer: sometimes it's wrong.

Vivienne: How many people do you think meet those requirements? My guess is that it's very few.

Maggie: Command lines are way over my head. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I found it.

I did finally buy a new computer, which also doesn't meet the graphics requirements, but that I can at least log in with. I still think it's unfair to block someone out because they may not have a spectacular experience in SL.

What you do with a command line option:

Go to the shortcut you use to launch Second Life.
Right-click and select "properties"
In the field called "target", insert the option you want to add.
After "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" would be a good place.
Like this:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" --noprobe --set InstallLanguage en

It's a shame that you bought a new machine but didn't pop for a few more bucks to really see SL.

You can also edit the featuretable.txt file found in the install directory. You may also need to edit gpu_table.txt too.
Just don't be surprised if SL crashes, has graphics glitches, crashes to desktop, crashes to blue screen or worst case: your computer starts to smoke or outright flame.

Caveat Emptor!

Umm...the reporter says she can login, and at least one method to get what she asked for was described. Is this even an issue?

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm glad for the fixes, but still think it should have an override option when the message comes up. Since it was difficult for me to find these resolutions, I think it should be made easier for SL users to log in without having to search the issues for them since it seems to be a fairly common problem.
