I would like to suggest an enhancement to the Group Chat Moderation feature of the Second Life server and viewer.

The goal is to create a capability that would allow for Instant Message announcements to be sent to a Group for the online members, but in such a way that those Group members could not respond to the announcements. With the current Group Chat Moderation this is not possible.

My idea involves the creation of a Group Ability that would permit designated Roles within a Group to issue and read Instant Messages within a Group (Send and Receive) and a companion Ability that would allow designated Roles to read those messages (Receive Only). Or, perhaps, the entire Chat capability for the Group could be limited, with a Send Only Ability assigned to specified Roles, and a Receive Only Ability assigned to other Roles within a Group.

The creation of these abilities would allow for the posting of timely messages (impromptu events, reminders, special sales, etc.) to online Group members (as these Group Instant Messages are not forwarded to e-mail for offline members) and prevent the Chat that often follows the receipt of such messages.

The "blue box" Notice method is not the answer, as these types of notifications would be delivered to online and offline group members alike. This Instant Message method would help limit the accumulated blue box notifications that people need to view as they Log In to Second Life.

I agree! a lot of us have huge groups and our members are complaining non stop about spam and annoying group chatter. The feature u have now "join group chat" simply logs every one right out of the chat window if u disallow this feature to a group role, and that is totally pointless, as managers need to be able to send out group IMs informing guests of events etc, but with out being bombarded with people asking for TP's, just wanting to chat or complaining about group chat. We need to be able to stop group chat, but not have to boot every one out the group chat window. The single person chat mute is again, totally useless, as you would end up muting one person after another. It needs a feature called "allow to chat in group" so this can be turned off for certain roles, like "everyone" and only leave it open for mangers etc.

Very much second Kaiya, nothing worse than having quality time with your honey being interrupted by avs i blush to remember what i called them at the time. It's very much a quality of SL issue.

Groujp chat is a plague due to its misuse. I would also like there to be an opt out feature so one does not have to receive moderated announcements if was does not want to. Many group owners use group chat to sent unwanted promotional announcements too frequently

I agree completely that group chat should be prohibited in the channel used for official communications. But what about setting up two groups – one for official communications and one for group chat. There is nothing wrong with group chat per se – it just doesnt belong in the channel for official communications.

I would love to be able to mute an entire group when group chat becomes too bad, but still be a member of the group for updates, announcements and benefits.

Implementing this feature would be a huge benefit.
