Issue opened re comment Soft Linden - 17/Oct/08 01:42 PM SVC-972

On teleporting from one region to another, the teleport screen hangs, the progress bar moves very slowly, and after about 1 minute, I get a "You have been logged out of Second Life: You have been disconnected from the region you were in." message.

The final screenshot (which is in colour) is taken in the region I was teleporting to, no prims are visible, only the agent and the terrain. A friend in the region I am teleporting to reports that I appear as a cloud there before being logged off, and when I log in using the option 'Last Location', I appear in the region I was teleporting to.

  • Edit by Soft Linden: When reporting, please include your full system
  • information (from Help-About Second Life) as well as your ISP and
  • what kind of DSL/Cable modem you have.

I reported this issue first on SVC-972 on 29 April 08. I have this issue EVERY time I teleport. In addition, if I stand at a region border, all I can see past the border is water.

I have a Thomson TMC390 cable modem and my ISP is Toya.

  • Arrive.
  • Can stay there for a few seconds.
  • Crash.
  • What I observed was just that I teleport and then can stay there for a few seconds and then crash.

I try to teleport - screen is dark - progress bar slowly moves
After about 50 seconds I get the message "you have been logged out..."
This happens on every attempt.
Also I cannot see or set/edit the groups I'm in.

With Windows OS everything works normal

I'm having similar issues. 9 times out of 10 I try to TP anywhere the viewer disconnects just as stated. But then when I restart it, and log back in, I can't move my avatar, and things only load in about a 50m diameter around me. Its very peculiar, then I relog again and its back to normal...

I think I'll stick with the RC until theres a fix for this one.

ISP is Comcast (Pittsburgh, PA USA area), Modem is an Arris TM502g Telephony Modem, Router is Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT v24 SP1

EDIT: I forgot to say, the last 1.20 build of the main viewer and the newest RC viewer both still allow TP's just fine on my system, its just 1.21.6 (99587) thats having the issue.

crissi yoshikawa added a comment - 20/Oct/08 01:32 AM
I'm having the exact same problem as Magnet and Ella. It started with the two most recent releases. One odd thing I have noticed with a bit of testing is the problem seems to go away if I bypas my cable router and hook my PC direct to the cable modem. Odd thing is the router is configured with all outbound ports open (and its been working fine that way for a year and a half) and TP does work sometimes with the router in place, so its not a firewall issue where its blocking some port SL needs and you can NEVER TP.. It does TP properly sometimes through the router. It acts like just the added delay of the router screws up the region handover protocol most of the time.

dakota schwade added a comment - 20/Oct/08 08:56 AM
Mac user here.

I am experiencing the "takes forever to teleport, then it fails" event as are others. Not all result in my being logged out, but occasionally that does happen.

This did not take place with the 1.21.5 RC, but only began when I began to use the 1.21.6 version.

crissi yoshikawa added a comment - 21/Oct/08 12:34 AM
With the help of tech support I was able to track down and fix my TP problem. Using a network packet loss test program (WinMTR-you can download it from the net-just Google it if you don't have it) that support recommended, I was able to determine that my cable router was performing poorly and at high packet rates, was dropping as much as 10% of its packets. It would work fine at lower packet rates. Once I determined that, I reduced the SL network bandwidth preference setting for the viewer from the default 500 kbps to 150 kbps and TP began to work properly again. No more water only regions (then crashing) after TPing. Of course, the viewer rezzing speed slowed down quite a bit as well. So I went out and bought a new cable router (my old one was 5 years old) and TP is working just fine with the newest viewer (1.21.6) with the network bandwidth set back to the default 500 kbps. So TP problems seem to be caused by packet loss somewhere in the network between your PC and SL's servers. Hope this helps resolve this problem.

ISP Blueyonder
Cable Modem Surboard 5101E
Router Netgear WPN824 Range max V2

The attached image shows something not mentioned here. I Teleport around a few times and then find myself in a sim where the sim name is correct but the parcel name is that of my previous location. If I look in the about land window the description is that of my previous parcel too.

However I am able to move around, participate in chat, send im's. That is until I decide to teleport again, then I get the slow bar and the message that I have been logged out that others are reporting. This happens everytime I have the scenario I describe above, the sim name is correct but the parcel name isn't.

Can we get a few more crash reports for us to review?

dakota schwade added a comment - 28/Oct/08 11:44 AM - edited
Well, it doesn't really crash when this happens.

My ISP is Comcast.

My cable modem is a Motorola SB5100 Surfboard, which is fed in to a Netgear RP614v4 Router, with the latest firmware installed.

For Mac and Linux users, be sure you've upgraded to 1.21. For everyone (Windows on any version and Mac and Linux on 1.21) please include what DSL/cable modem equipment and provider you have in addition to the regular system information

Same hardware, same provider, same attempt to TP after booting the other OS:

-------------------------------------------
1) Linux viewer

On Linux I get logged out after TP. When I walk into another region all I see is water. Looking back I see the old region and can walk back into it.

I can see packets going to the region I am (7795) in (both UDP and TCP) and the sometime some TCP traffic to 8084 (but no UDP)

I can see everything fine on the big map and the mini map. Teleport doesn't work, but when I log back in I end up where I wanted to teleport to.

When I teleport I seen no traffic

hiruko:~ root# tcpdump -i en1 net 8.10.0.0/16 and not host sim7795.agni.lindenlab.com
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on en1, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes

to any other region, then I get logged out again.

This has been happening to me for over a year now. I just grabbed the latest build 1.21.6 and it still happens. It also happens with the RC 1.22.0 (103345). I am going to attach a log file to this as well. It looks like it is dropping the old region before there is info from the new region available.

My system specs will are in the log.

EDIT - This is a MacBook Pro (Intel)

Thanks,

Petaris

Maybe my situation can offer a clue.
I have this problem from late afternoon (GMT+2) to late evening.
These would be the times that most people are using the internet in my small town.
If I wait until really late (3am) after most others have gone to bed then I am able to TP just fine.
I've tried this experiment several times over the past month or so and the pattern is always the same.

Have just moved to a much faster service provider, still same problem, is it round trip delay that is killing us ???

got logged out again on a bad teleport, this time when i tried to relog it was treated like a crash and i got timed out, unlike the other times when i could relog with no problems attaching another crash log.

i have been logged out with Public Nightly 1-22-4(105784) more then i ever have, again logged out on an incomplete teleport, the bar moves really slow and when it gets to the half way mark i'm logged out and again i had other things going on that had no problems with the internet connection, sending a crash log.

Sugarcult Dagger added a comment - 16/Dec/08 08:32 AM
logged out again on a failed teleport not just once,

failed teleport, logged out
logged back in
made a good teleport
arrived
clicked on a landmark
process started
bar moved slow stalled at half way point
logged out a second time

I may have a workaround (at least for myself).

I have consistently had similar problems. I'm on (Ubuntu) Linux, and have also had all these same issues with the Open Metaverse viewer, Hippo, and the SL 1.22.4 client.

Today, I disconnected my old SMC7004VBR broadband router and instead connected my computer directly to my ADSL modem. Suddenly (tonight, at least), all my clients (using all my logins) suddenly work nicely. I can teleport across regions. I can even fly across region boundaries.

The problem may have been with the router. I also noticed that while I was setting up PPPOE, the driver wanted to limit my MTU (to 1460 or 1492, I think); perhaps this was related.

I hope this info might be helpful to some of you. (Meanwhile, I will either replace my router, or else try setting its MTU).

j3rry vacano added a comment - 01/Jan/09 02:42 AM
same for me, connected directly to the ADSL modem, all is good. once I add my wireless router in the middle it doesn't work again. looking at tcpdump output it looks like the wireless router is dropping UDP packets coming in (compare two tcpdumps, one directly connected and one with the wireless router in the way)
I do get the occasional UDP flood error message in the wireless router, so it seems there is some flooding algorithm there that starts dropping UPD packets. I can't work out how to turn it off....

Qarl Linden added a comment - 07/Jan/09 09:26 AM
hey all - just jumping in here randomly, i haven't read all the comments, so forgive my ignorance.

i know that wireless routers that use NAT will remap UDP packets back to the originating computer. they do this by port number. so if you computer is talking on port 13050 - any other computer (our simulators) who try to talk to 13050 will get connected to your computer.

BUT SOME wireless routers will only let computers which your computer has first spoken-to initiate these packets. so if you talk to sim1 on port 13050, and then sim2 tries to talk to you back on port 13050, it won't get through. (b/c you've never spoken to sim2 before. he might be a hacker.)

it sounds like this is what might be happening. i'll try to get ahold of one of this routers so i can test. in the meantime, i'd try switching routers, or changing the permissions on your router to allow the more promiscuous connections.

Evangeline Manga added a comment - 08/Jan/09 01:05 AM
This is all very nice in theory, however, the explanation does not cut it for me.

My router is a multi-Network-IF Fedora Core 8 linux box and I have full control over natting and port forwarding (iptables, shorewall). I would see any discarded packets in the logs.

Also, on a PC behind this router running SL on Win-XP works, whereas SL on Linux ubuntu 8.04 (the preferred solution) does not.

Moreover, during a short time after a kernel upgrade ubuntu worked too. Then I upgraded the video driver and again it does not work (see comments above).

Chalice Yao added a comment - 08/Jan/09 02:34 AM
If it isn't dropped UDP packets between the router and Sim 1 or 2, couldn't it be dropped UDP packets between the sims?
Just a theory, I don't know what kind of packets the sims use for communications on the internal network, tho I suspect it's also UDP.

Hi,

i've some days being having probs tp ing anywhere, yet other days theres no prob at all.Chrisi Toshihawas 21/08/08 12.34 pm post looks helpful though.Think ill try that later.i've found another workaround solution for not being able to tp at all though from any sim im in at time, so sim doesnt make dif.

i've got another jira report based on the same. The link to my report is https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-11394. i have found a workaround solution which works

for me, which i will tell you about in a sentence or two.i have had next to no help from sl to fix this issue.Seems they stil don't have a fix for this or have solved it.All they

have given me is links to other jira reports that may help me.So came to this report hoping to find answers to achieve a permanent fix but all i find is people repoting

problems being able to tp but no answers or real help from sl.

Anyway here's the workaround that i worked out myself from an article on secondlifes wbsite i read about it usually being a good idea to delete your secondlife cache

files (but i knew that already; that its usually good idewad to get rid of cache files) and from an arror message i saw come up in bottom right of my screen when i was

outside sl, saying unable to read or corrupted seondlife textures.exe file, so initially i put the two pieces of imformation together.

i have Vista basic as my op system, so the options to click on may be slightly different in other versions of windows but if you stick with the logic you ahould be able to

work out the correct options to click on and the correct address to go to on your op to go to same pace and delete same secondlife cache files as me.

Initially i clicked on start, then clicked on computer, then clicked on c drive then i entered C:\users(the user name for my pc so obviously enter the user name for your

particular pc) so once inside c drive section of computer in search bar at top enter C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Secondlife\Cache and click go to button at

end of searchbar or click enter and youll get to where secondlife cache files are.Initially i just deleted the texture fuile as i believe the errors that accruie when i run sl are

basically all located there. But after the 1st time i just delet all the cache files in secondlife\cache. i leave the secondlife\cache file open in another window whilst sl runs

and anytime i start to get bad lag so think may start to get prob tp iong i open the cache window and delete all the files there i can whilst its still running. You will get a

system message that comes up saying onme or two files are being used presently and asking if you want to try again, skip or cancel just click on skip for each opf these

type of files and your op will delete the rest and send to recycle bin.i've also every time i can remember deleted all the cache files within secondlife\cache after ive logged.

Its just a workaround and not a permanent fix which im after. It works for me though, i hope it works for you all.Since doing it, deleting all the files i can in sls caches and

after logging deleting them all in sls caches i have never had any prob tping again and think when i delete all files poss in sl cache while its running it reduces lag too.

Burt Simondsen added a comment - 14/Jan/09 09:47 AM
After I posted about disconnecting my router, I realized something.

My router is also a firewall. When I unplugged from the router, I also eliminated its firewall. My problem may have simply been related to firewall rules or a NAT issue.

It was open for UDP on 123 and for both TCP and UDP on 80, 113 , 443, 6881-6889, 24566, 45574 and 56043. Some of these were for P2P, others were specifically for Secondlife

I'll watch this issue and await further developments.

Terrioke, please try right-clicking on yourself and selecting Take Off > Detach All to remove your attachments. Then, try relogging. Scripted attachments have the ability to affect your avatar's movement.

Please try unplugging your modems and routers for a full minute, then plug them back in and log back into Second Life.

Please see this article in Knowledge Base I'm having navigation issues > I'm having trouble teleporting

Please check your network connection How do I check for packet loss (network lag)? and Unusually restrictive firewalls block teleporting

If you still have an issue, please add your

  • full computer environment Help > About Second Life
  • ISP and what kind of DSL/Cable modem you have
  • how you connect to the internet (wired/wireless)

Dito, i created a jira about this issue and got the advice from Ella (wich is just a past/copy reply) that should detach everything, disconnect modem etc. i just went back to last release. The problem instantly vanished. I can TP fine now. The 1.22 viewer is the problem, not my PC or connection.

Since Friday Morning 1st May following latest server upgrades (note.... not all teleports are from or to new server code, but it appears to be causing overall network confusion), when teleporting, I arrive successfully, but it seems to be timing out or not completely transferring all avatar detail successfully to new sim location. Often all is heard is the background ding and NO MESSAGE of being logged off. (sometimes the message is displayed, but in less than 40% of the cases). Crash is noticed when no movement possible, or no messages received in chat, when they have been known to have been sent. Only workround I have found at the moment is to relog after every single teleport.
Log file attached .... login at Solarium, 1 teleport from login point to home at Kuyto, then crash. total time 5 minutes.

Have tried RC 1.22 as shown, same problem different higher powered machine with both standard viewer and new release candidate (1.23), which is why I suspect server code to be more likely culprit.

Please note same attachments on avatar as there have always been, with no previous problems. Originally seen on main machine which is 2.8Mhz dual core intel, with 3gb ram, and nVidia Xtreme 8550/256Mb graphics. Have tried different machine/ completely fresh install to make sure it is not machine/install related.

Network wired. same as it has always been, 8md download capacity, packet loss minimal, firewalls etc as always have been (have seen increased packet loss and poor performance since new super duper network ring installed !!!! ) Maybe it is one of the tweaks you been trying there that is causing this problem. for log file re recent crash see SCR 4187.

****UPDATE****
Any suggestion of attachments causing these problems is totally bogus. Have created new character, cleared cache, completely uninstalled SL (including those files in application data), cleared all deleted files, restarted system, and reinstalled SL. With new character, & no attachments, teleport progresses normally, I land at new destination, then within 3 - 4 minutes I crash, or I am unable to move on landing. Log out and relog and I am in new destination. so it must be partially completing teleport. THIS IS ON EVERY SINGLE TELEPORT since the morning of May 1st

***UPDATE 2***
7 days and NOT A SINGLE TELEPORT completed correctly. Crash reports:- Not crashing according to LL just getting logged out..... What is the use of a 3D world where you cannot travel from one place to another without having to relog every single time. I would expect this from a "Second rate alternative" not from the leader in the field!!!!

As you can see updated to latest release candidate...still no joy in completing a single teleport successfully since May 1st

Funnily enough this question raises it's head again. If packet loss is as you say high, how come I get green ights on the lagmeter, or barely showing....0-1%. Trace is always inaccurate on this ISP for the first 5 legs, as the nature of the nodes does not report back correctly for winMTR. If that were the case I would have zero internet connection, which is not the case. the london/new york connection has 0% packet loss whereas prior to that link it shows 91-100% packet loss, which would mean zero connection. All other online games work fine so does my internet, even streaming video is no problem., so why is it such an issue with SL ?

Astarte, from your TraceRoute there are high levels of Packet Loss. Please see How do I check for packet loss (network lag)?

The traceroute process runs and repeats over and over again. Look under the Loss % column. Optimally, it should be as close to all 0's as possible.

  • If there's any packet loss in the first one or two hosts (listed under Hostname), the problem's in your network. Turning down your Maximum Bandwidth may help. You can do this from your viewer menu by selecting Edit > Preferences > Network and moving the Maximum Bandwidth slider towards the left. Reduce the bandwidth until your packet loss is 0%.
  • If the problem's after the first two or three hosts, but before the first hostname containing "Level3," the problem's at your ISP, and you might want to contact them to investigate further.

Please try unplugging your modems and routers for a full minute, then plug them back in and log back into Second Life.

For a further response tailored to your individual situation please Submit a Ticket with Support see JIRA Home page

Thank you very much for including your TraceRoute. It has some personally identifying information, as this is a Public JIRA please edit your comment and attach the text file to your Ticket to http://secondlife.com/support/.

Thank you : )

Screenshots following 2 recent teleports showing all green lagmeter and no apparent problems with stats. only to be followed 60 secs later by quit or view chat notice. Region experiencing problems. If as you say my ISP connection is at fault how come I get all green lights consistently, yet fail to complete a single teleport. Please also notice, both shots show 0% packet loss.

I have however noted that although I have arrived at new destination. all info in the land tab is still for the previous location.

And if you can get support to talk to me on this issue I will happily follow that route, but currently they won't. I can log in so it is not a problem !!!

Upgraded to 1.23.2 RC viewer.

Updated graphics to NVidia 185.85.

Makes no difference, average time I stay alive after a teleport, before being logged out by system is now 2 minutes !!

Looks like it is back to OS grid and Open Life for me, as SecondLife is a dead Dodo at the moment.

Just a quick update.

31 days....so far with teleports inoperable. Still the same problem, initial contact with new sim made, then connection lost to the ether within 2 mins.

Further Update.

If according to this JIRA and SL, if "my end of the connection is so crap", how come I have no problems on OSgrid or OpenLife. Yet here I have had problems for the last month with not a single teleport completing successfully.

Linden Labs...SORT YOUR PLATFORM OUT !!!!!

this problem is not showing as packet loss on the about second life or my nvida control panel, text file attached, and has been happening with even more regularity with multiple different avatars, at times when i use multiple viewers one gets logged out while the other avatar or avatars usually are not, and about every 5th or 6th try, even the first try, to teleport fails and ends with a log out. some avatars fail at a higher rate than others will, cannot teleport at all from my home that is set at 725m high and all green lights on the lag meter with no attachments on.

Sugarcult Dagger added a comment - 14/Jun/09 08:21 AM - edited
this is the latest info from my nvida control panel after being logged out 3 times in a row due to a failed teleport. SL is one of my "firstPacket" programs.

Exact same problem, started the evening before all server/region problems begun.

9 of 10 times I cant TP, TP screen is very slow. If its almost halfway (after like 2minutes) I am kicked out from SL with this reason: You have been disconnected from the region you where in.

So I need to log on again.
When I login I am at the new spot, where I was TP'ing to while crashing.

  • I did a WinMTR scan, no network problems was answer from Support.
  • Deleted settings in App. Data
  • Reseted router
  • Reinstalled SL numerous times

Etc etc

These same issues have been happening to me since upgrading to viewer 1.23.4 (123908) June 15, 2009 for about 75% of the time when I teleport.

Wish I could tell you there is a pattern. this happens under numerous conditions of avatar wearing different attachment, (Stiletto Moody Barefoot shoes, Bandit Jewelery, flexi prims skirts) etc, and music media on and off, going to full and not so full SIMs.

I'm currently using viewer 1.22. I've updated to 1.23 and experience the same problem. I've noticed that as of on or around July 13, 2009, I've also been experiencing teleport problems whenever I wear highly scripted attachments. I say highly scripted because I'm able to TP when I'm wearing scripted items, just not as MANY scripted items.

Since I own my own island I was able to do some investigating. I checked my avatar script time when I was wearing the highly scripted attachments and it was over 1 m/s. When I remove the heavily scripted attachments, my avatar script time falls under 1 m/s and I'm able to TP again.

Item Examples that I've worn that are highly scripted and cause my avi to go over 1m/s script time:

  • Stiletto Moody Bare Katherine Shoes
  • My higher prim jewelry I create with a scripted HUD system for color/metal/gem change. (Each prim has a script in it to work with the HUD and listen to commands)

When wearing the "highly scripted" attachments if I try to TP anywhere, I first get an error "Unable to complete your teleport request, please try again later". If I try to TP again too soon, I get an error "Teleporting is blocked". If I try to TP again before waiting at least 60 seconds I get logged out of SL.

As a jewelry maker with a scripted system it's a potentially major business impacting problem. So far, I've received one report of a customer of mine experiencing the same problem. If she wears the jewelry I made, she can't TP. If she takes off the jewelry, she can.

Some of the same issues in this critical bug are related to SVC-4877 and SVC-4169 - Especially the current parcel/previous parcel issue.
