 Description  « Hide
Functionality needed:

Ability to send IMs and/or notices to only people in a specific group role. In many cases roles will be used to differentiate functions in an important social group: in my case I have a category of vendors who may post notices, and very often want to talk to them alone to help them out. Also a role for staff, etc. Having to send irrelevant notices to all isn't workable on a large group, setting up multiple new groups just for these people is wildly unmanageable, and communication channels should be there to allow talking to specific roles only.

Thank you Honey!

I like this a lot. It's not nearly as critical as the broken Notices issue or the need to silence group IM, but it would allow me to re-integrate two auxiliary groups I had to create, one to manage volunteers and security alerts, and one to have members invite one another to a locked member skybox. I also have a de facto "group" of very involved leaders which is a folder in my Calling Cards. There must be a better way.

While eventually we will have to spawn more groups for specific tasks such as land ownership or running a newsletter, it's a burden to ask people to belong to multiple groups, and holding that down as much as possible is a good thing.

Definitely a great idea and one that I have often wished for too. It is crazy to have to create many groups just to have a multitiered group structure with separate communication.

This is a fantastic idea, and would save group space as well. Currently I'm in three groups for the same land simply because I need to keep communication channels separate. Allowing group IMs for various roles would allow me to free up a lot of group space, as well as aid in manager and renter communication. I hope this suggestion is not forgotten the next time LL looks at groups.

After trying to help Honey come up with a way of sending messages to just the designers in a group I too think this is a great idea. There is a lack of lsl commands to make this feasible any other way. I could find no way of extracting just members with a certain role from a group and additionally no way to then extract their avatar keys to enable a notecard to be dropped to the list. This feature would make it simple for anyone to communicate effectively within their group.

I absolutely think this is one of the most beneficial additions to groups, but will only work if group notices is fixed - since all group notices only go out to people who are logged on at the time of sending in large groups, pointless to have division if people can't receive their notices anyways.

But I think what would be more beneficial is:

Users can be allowed to join certain roles versus certain roles be invited by the group owner/management. So to give it a real tier like functionality. Right now the option is for either anyone can join in any role (except owner), or no on can join any role unless assigned by owner etc. It would really help building community to make that even more flexible.

For example, my group correspond with my website which has a bunch of subsites. It would be nice to allow people to join the specific roles in my group that correspond to each of the specific site and that they receive the notices pertaining to that. So perhaps a box to check that says allow anyone to be this role. This way not all roles will be open and I can have employees in the group too.

Was looking through Jira to see if this was already listed. This could help many people deal with groups better. There are times you want to only notice or IM parts of the group, and as it sits now you have to create yet another group to stuff into our meager 25 group list. This is a high priority for the Live Music community as I see it. Voted for and will pass on to the new listserv and forums.

The temporary solution is extremely simple. (as with MISC-208 on the main ISSUES page.)

Seperate certain functions in SL from the way that you are trying to do them now, by making them external.

Thus, a lot of the problems of "extra load on the servers", concerning this issue, can be easily resolved.

Simply Run SL in a window by clicking the "run in window" checkbox in Preferences/Graphics. This will allow you access to the functions of your PC, whilst not having to log out of SL.

When someone becomes a member of your group, they must simply supply a contact email address, and also run SL in a window, in order to be able to be informed immediately of the receipt of a management only/specific staff or role only/group only email and be able to respond, without logging out of SL.

1) Do a Google for "free automated email programs". Download a bunch of those that suit you and test them out to see which you would prefer to use.

2) Use the automated email program to send bulk notices/messages to the people or companies that you need to.

3) Smile as you watch SL turn from "crash test dummy volunteer course" to the world you wanted and helped create.

Thanks all for pitching in and supporting this issue.

Lightscribe Infinity, you've added this exact same comment to several JIRA concerning groups, seemingly suggesting that a temporary solution to inadequacies in group functions is not to use them, and require group members to use email. This isn't a fix for me - I have rolling population of 550 designers on my group in role Officer and I for sure can't guarantee they will all be reading their email. What JIRAs are about is asking LL to fix inadequate parts of their system, not to suggest that we just stop using them.

Could someone from Linden Lab please comment on whether this is under active consideration? It has a lot of support.

Honey, NOTE:"The temporary solution is extremely simple. (as with MISC-208 on the main ISSUES page.)"

Which part of T.E.M.P.O.R.A.R.Y. do you not understand?

I also voted for this to be fixed...If you bothered to check...

Have a great day anyway! ; )

Lindens, this issue is listed as STATUS: OPEN, PRIORITY: MAJOR.
7 months later you have not commented...

Having the ability to IM a certain role would certainly make life easier compared to having to build a separate parallel group to capture those folks.

(And yes, obviously we could use email. But the point is, let's get this adjusted inside of SL for maximum effectiveness...)

This would be a GREAT asset. When you consider many businesses have 10+ groups: Management, DJs, VIP, etc etc etc. If the ability to make these group roles, and simply have power to send notices, group IMs, etc to ONLY those roles it would cut down on groups and remove the need for extra groups.

Mason Fredriksson added a comment - 17/Aug/08 10:58 PM
Yes please! This would have the added benefit of limiting the amount of notices people get that does not pertain to them!
