 Description  « Hide
Group functionality for owners and users is seriously lagging other areas of control in Second Life. As the owner of a group very significant for SL commerce (Fashion Consolidated), I would like to submit a set of feature requests that will greatly help group cohesion so vital to Second Life community and commerce.

Top priority:

1. An option for group members to suppress group IMs (suggested: tickbox "Receive Group IMs") complementary to the "Receive Group Notices" tickbox.

This is the most asked-for issue with groups: a way for a busy user to opt out of receiving group IMs. Very often these group IM sessions are lengthy and off-topic, and as a group owner I try to strike the balance between group community and sympathy for those for whom this is an interruption, but my only control with 560 members is constant sympathetic vigilance and trying to intervene when use is excessive to meet the balanced wishes of the community.

Important missing functionality:

2. An option for group owners to suppress group IMs. Again, this is complementary to the current ability to allow or disallow group notices to some/all group members.

3. Group owner's ability to delete archived notices and determine timespan for archived notices retention. This is partly an attempt to mitigated bug RT#650671, where multiple notices are necessarily sent due to errors, but would generally be very useful.

4. Group owner's ability to ban specific users from joining. This is important to prevent IM spamming, a common problem. Clearly alt accounts will get around this but I've seen the same resident av spamming, leaving, the rejoining and spamming again. A blacklist would make this at least somewhat harder for IM spammers.

5. Inclusion of timestamps as well as datestamps in archived notices, member's last login times, etc.

6. Larger Group Charter text allowance, or "attach charter notecard" option on group front page. Very often a charter needs to explain in more details group content, rules etc.

Desirable:

7. Group member's ability to request "digest" version of a group's notices. This would allow a busy resident to suppress popups as is currently (usually) working, but still receive a summary of all notices at a time they desire, rather than delving into the archive.

and/or

8. Group owner's ability to set a "digest" periodic time for all notices sent to be resent to members.

I hope these suggestions are helpful, and would welcome comments and progress on these, especially item 1.

Honey Fairweather

It would be a nice feature to supress group im's

The ability to suppress group IMs when desired would be most convenient. I belong to several very voluble groups, and frequently the lower left quarter of my screen is all but obliterated by group IMs, making it difficult to follow any conversation being held with present company. Rather than having to pause and un-Join several groups, then re-Join them when I get around to it, temporary suppression of the group IMs would be a welcome solution.
Also the possibility of receiving a digest is extremely appealing. I love my groups, especially FashCon, but when I am in a hurry to do something and need to clear my screen, I race through clicking the "OK" button on all the blue popups, and can only hope that I haven't missed anything important and will remember to go back and read the archived notices.

Agreed! I think a "digest mode" would be great! I don't want to miss out on any news, but closing the group IMs is the first task when things get busy. Honey has lots of great suggestions--anything that allows SL Groups to encompass more listserv-like functionality would be good.

Wonderful suggestions, especially the one to suppress group IM's. There are some very good groups that get left because of the IM activity.. victims of their own success. Being able to suppress group IM's would allow anyone to join any group and make us all breathe easier. I don't like having to shush the group members. I even lost one of my group officers because there was so much group IM activity.

I left an enhancement request out - apologies - and would like it to be added to the list. This is an important one, and the functionality should be possible to implement:

9. Ability to send IMs and/or notices to only people in a specific group role. In many cases roles will be used to differentiate functions in an important social group: in my case I have a category of vendors who may post notices, and very often want to talk to them alone to help them out. Also a role for staff, etc. Having to send irrelevant notices to all isn't workable on a large group, setting up multiple new groups just for these people is wildly unmanageable, and communication channels should be there to allow talking to specific roles only.

This isn't an all-or-nothing - even some of these enhancements would help greatly, but I didn't want to file 9 reports. Looking forward to this enhancement request being assigned soon, and some comment back from Linden. Thanks - Honey

Thanks for these ideas. FYI, putting so many ideas (as worthwhile as they may be) in a single issue makes them much harder to deal with, especially because:
  • It takes a long time to read and understand what's involved.
  • Fellow Residents may want to vote for SOME, but not ALL of them.
  • From a development standpoint, this is monolithic and unfeasible in one swoop.

Internally, we have sub-tasks, which we don't have here, but I'd recommend:

  • Creating a single "New Feature" request for each new piece of group functionality you wish to see implemented.
  • Linking between them so they can be found easier. See "Link this issue to another issue" in the left sidebar.

Distilling what needs to be achieved will help us drill down and focus, and is far more useful for taking this beyond "a list of great ideas" into something actionable.

And we have had a wish to "mute group IMs" or control them in a better way for a long time.

For now, I'm linking this to the internal Groups 3.0 umbrella project we have, but what I mentioned would be greatly appreciated to get this moving beyond productive discussion.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response Torley, yes I can file them separately. I'm guessing though this will lose all the votes gained here, which discussions in-world have told are mostly all for point 1. Is there any way these votes can be transferred there when filed to signal to Linden how important this is? I fear exhaustion from people who already have voted not doing so again. Also some indication of what the progress/likely outcome for muting group IMs is would be helpful - I wasn't under any illusion that this wouldn't have been thought of already, but wanted to indicate just how important it is to so many groups and threatens their cohesion as residents leave through sheer frustration, which is happening a lot.

With regard to linking, if I have 9 issues, I'm guessing all-way linking isn't helpful: it's certainly not doable as (if I have it right!) I'd need to do 64 links. Can I link them all back to this request here and be sure this central request won't be deleted if I do, as a means to link them all to a single point?

Thanks - Honey

^ Honey, unfortunately we can't transfer votes. However, keep in mind for the long-term of Public JIRA, we hope that community usage of it will be much greater so there's potentially many more votes that'll be expressed.

In particular, someone may feel strongly about wanting a certain group feature, but not another, which is why it helps to separate them.

The latest I have about "muting group IMs" is we still want to do it; it'll likely be part of a general "Groups 3.0" improvement project, so when that happens, I'll definitely advocate and remind fellow Lindens of how much this is wanted (having seen it many, many times on the old Feature Voting Tool too).

While we don't have subtasks on Public JIRA like we do on our internal implementation, I'd suggest since you already have this issue setup, that you link to the finer-grained multiple issues centrally from this one, and edit your Description to encourage others to check it out.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply Torley. I've created each as a separate request and linked back to here as you suggest. I've added a much requested one in too: sending a notecard to new members explaining group remit, rules, etc, analogous to mailing lists, Yahoo groups etc.

Can I urge all who have an interest in any of the issues above to review the separate enhancement requests:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-64
to
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-72

and to vote for/comment on those they see as worthy? I know many group owners are watching this list in support. Thanks all.

Great ideas.. some groups are needed to be part of to have shops in certain malls etc.. it would be a great thing not to get pop ups from them everytime (its the reason i left several malls already.. too much IM spam)

Also i have had several issues with spammers rejoining when i eject them. Most of my groups have hundreds of members so it would be not possible to approve every member when they enter... a ban would be very welcomed here!

A great initiative!

I agree we need all of those options to improve groups. I also think they should increase the # of roles in groups and the # of groups allowed

i think it cost less on each system to manage say 50 groups per avatar, versus managing a main character, and an alt, both inventories and both groups.
If they increase the # of groups this will mean they only manage one avatar, 1 inventory, and groups.
makes sense to me.
