 Description  « Hide
I haven't received any IM's from SL in my email since 6/15/08 even though I have the 'send IM to email' checked. Yes, I checked the spam file. I also sent IM from one of my av's to another. Still no IM sent to email. I checked the forum and this seems to be more than just one person having a problem.

It happens to me everyone once and awhile. No IMs to email – not even from groups. Then it starts back up again.

Valentino Tendaze added a comment - 22/Jun/08 01:23 AM
It is intermittent for me, i.e. some are getting through, some don't - so not a problem with settings.

I am using the Nicholaz EC-f viewer; POP3 email server at my ISP.

Yak Wise added a comment - 24/Jun/08 12:15 AM
most IM's do not get forwarded to email, sometimes one does, but most do not.
Inword, I found all my communication settings had changed to default, set them again.
Also disabled and re-enabled the setting at http://secondlife.com/account/contact.php.
No cigar yet.......

I have just noted that inworld, the 'settings-Communications screen looks like it is not updating (server issue?) i.o.w. it looks like it does when viewing it offline... most things greyed out... (screenshot uploaded)

Axienne DeVaux added a comment - 24/Jun/08 01:06 PM
This seems completely random, although I've noticed it seems to occur more with IMs sent by objects, than by things like group IMs. Two IMs were sent from the same sim within 2 minutes of each other. Only one made it to email. I checked the text and no indication that the other one was batched up within either. I am receiving about a tenth of my usual IM to Email volume.

Korvel Noh added a comment - 25/Jun/08 07:08 AM
I am seeing this as well. It may be happening with IMs from other avatars, but it is definitely happening consistently with IMs from objects. The objects themselves are simply using the llInstantMessage() function. If I am logged in I will get the IM, but if I'm am not logged in the IM does not get forwarded. Worse than that, those missed IMs are not waiting for me when I do log in. (I know the IM was sent as others who are logged and set to receive the IM do get it.)

I have reset my preferences and whitelisted all e-mail from LL. The scripts themselves have not changed and have been running without incident for over a year and a half.

Pale Spectre added a comment - 25/Jun/08 11:25 AM
As this seems to be pretty much a confirmed bug I'm going to up this to critical, if only in an effort to have anyone at The Lab take notice.

I think a week is long enough.

Torley Linden added a comment - 25/Jun/08 03:20 PM
Thanks for those of you who've reported this – we looked at this during Bridie's Release Candidate bug triage, and need more info. I know a solid repro here is tough, but for those of you having the "some IMs make it but others don't", can you please email the ones that DID make it with FULL headers to me? torley at lindenlab dot com

We can followup with our Operations personnel, but we need more to go on. Also as possible and if you feel comfortable:

  • Try rotating your email address and trying different ones.
  • Please provide your email client and ISP.

Post if that makes a difference.

Uechi Norfolk added a comment - 25/Jun/08 04:18 PM
Over time this has proven to be a useful and often necessary function. It does deserve some worktime to repair. Please do that...

Korvel Noh added a comment - 25/Jun/08 04:29 PM - edited
In our case there are three of us set to receive IMs from the objects giving us the most trouble. We are using Thunderbird and Outlook Express with e-mail ultimately going to pair.com, fastmail.fm, and aol.com. It is impossible to provide you with headers now because IM to e-mail forwarding is failing 100% of the time for these objects at this point. (Torley: I will e-mail a header from one of these objects from before forwarding stopped working on June 8.)

If the problem is indeed that e-mail is not reaching our respective mail hosts, shouldn't we at least receive the IM when we log in the next time?

Jomac Silvera added a comment - 26/Jun/08 04:31 AM

What I see is, that IMs sent as group info will go through, but no personal IM. This behaviour starts about two weeks ago.

Torley Linden added a comment - 26/Jun/08 08:01 AM
Thanks for the emails! I'm importing this and letting the right Lindens know so we can investigate further...

Violet Faulds added a comment - 27/Jun/08 03:01 AM
Thanks Torley. I'm not getting any IM's to email except group IM's. I can forward those to you if you'd like, just let me know here. Email client is Yahoo and the ISP is sbcglobal.net

Pale Spectre added a comment - 30/Jun/08 11:58 PM
Well, it looks like IM to emails have suddenly reverted to their 'old' style and are coming through once again.

Did someone back some recent server side changes out?

Yak Wise added a comment - 01/Jul/08 12:00 AM - edited
It seems that since 30/6 IM's from a box (my visitor detector) are being forwarded again.

I notice that something must have changed because there used to be a title like:

"Second Life - the object 'Visitor Detector 2.3' has sent you a message"

but now the title says:

"Message From Second Life"

– Added – : Confirming that Also IM's from other "boxes" are getting forwarded again by email.

Violet Faulds added a comment - 01/Jul/08 04:00 PM
I have started to receive personal IM's to my email finally, starting last night. Hopefully it's fixed?

Pale Spectre added a comment - 25/Jul/08 02:08 PM
With the advent of: Second Life Server 1.23.3.92922, I believe that IMs to Email have gone AWOL again.

Axienne DeVaux added a comment - 26/Jul/08 09:32 AM
No IMs to Email since Thursday 24th morning SLT

Yak Wise added a comment - 26/Jul/08 11:05 AM
Confirming that the trouble is back indeed.
Did not receive the messages from a script (visitor detector) by email.
(Can't yet confirm this also happens with IM's from Av's as there were not any yetr)

Shinichi Mathy added a comment - 03/Aug/08 03:39 AM
I have been having the same problems for about 2 weeks now. I always get GROUP notices only. I get no IMs from avatars or from my vendors, which is causing me a headache.

Yak Wise added a comment - 03/Aug/08 03:46 AM
Confirming that this issue is just continueing for too long now....
I see that there is no Linden assigned to this... how do we get a Linden to payy attention?

Korvel Noh added a comment - 03/Aug/08 03:57 AM
I would like to also confirm that this problem still exists and second Yak's exasperation for the duration of this problem. IM forwarding seemed to have been fixed temporarily in the beginning of July, but as the posters above have noted, began failing around the third week. Currently I am receiving no IMs forwarded from my in-world objects.

Yak Wise added a comment - 03/Aug/08 05:26 PM
Seems to be working again... can others confirm this?

Pale Spectre added a comment - 04/Aug/08 12:51 AM
Yup, I can confirm that I also suddenly got a bunch if IMs starting in the last few hours.

I agree with others; it would be nice if their was some kind of official comment from someone who is working on this problem.

Yak Wise added a comment - 09/Aug/08 04:25 AM
Coming inworld.... seeing again messages that did not get forwarded by email

Pale Spectre added a comment - 10/Aug/08 11:12 AM
Confirmed as broken again. <sighs>

While no one starts out with this intent, I think if you have enough problems over a long enough period of time, every one just accepts problems as the norm. I fear SL achieved this mindset sometime ago.

I'm not even sure if this particular problem is being worked on ...it's disappearance and reappearance is starting to feel very random.

Axienne DeVaux added a comment - 10/Aug/08 03:48 PM
Confirmed, no IMs (from objects) to Email since Friday 8th (morning) SLT

I cannot believe this is only affecting such a very small subset of AVs ??

cora burton added a comment - 11/Aug/08 06:32 AM
Have not been receiving offline IMs for a few weeks except for group messages. Today, I switched my SL account email to my hotmail address and am now receiving offline IMs again.

Freda Fredriksson added a comment - 12/Aug/08 10:58 AM
the same for me, no offline-IM, no object-messages for weeks, sending a ticket they told me the problem is my mac...hahaha. How can the system know the email is landing on a mac? Then 10 days ago it started to work again without doing anything, Then stopped again 4 days ago and now I do not even get notifications for getting inventorie offers. Its so annoying, when you make business.

Pale Spectre added a comment - 23/Aug/08 01:46 PM
Having read in the forums about someone receiving 1,365 off-line IMs in their email (http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=255845) I thought I'd revisit this problem to see if I could get just ONE IM sent to my email.

And I have a theory.

What I did was to temporarily change the Second Life email address of an Alt account to a mailinator.com address (http://www.mailinator.com) ...and, success. I could get IMs to go to the mailinator address.

So, my theory is that email addresses are being truncated. When I look at my Communication preferences in-world I'd noticed that the full email address doesn't show, instead it ends with three dots '...', my email address is quite long: 12 characters @ 23 characters, long. A total of 36 characters. So, I'm wondering if the IM to Email routines can't handle that long an address.

Otherwise it's got to be domain specific. I have a .co.uk address. A proper one, none of this gmail/hotmail stuff.

By the way. The emails were routed from: web-ds5.agni.lindenlab.com, and the subject was in the 'new' style: "The object '<object name>' has sent you a message from Second Life.

So, any Linden able to check this?

And, if I'm right, I think I deserve a prize for this one.

Axienne DeVaux added a comment - 24/Aug/08 02:12 PM
I think Pale Spectre could be onto something here, I have a 10 character @ 18 character email address (also .co.uk) and I've just configured a short .net address after reading the previous comment. Lo and behold,.the IMs started coming in almost immediately.

Freda Fredriksson added a comment - 25/Aug/08 12:22 AM
Unfortunately this does not work for me. I had a short email before and changed now to an 5 charcters@5 charcters.de one and the off-IMs are not yet coming in by email, just group-notices

Pale Spectre added a comment - 25/Aug/08 08:36 AM
How odd. So, both myself and Axienne can get the emails to work using alternative addresses of .com and .net, but Freda's .de doesn't work, and .co.uk doesn't seem to work either.

In the meanwhile here's a somewhat clunky workaround. I created a googlmail account, linked that to my SL account, and set the googlemail account to forward its emails to one of my 'proper' email accounts. I successfully received around 30 off-line IMs this way.

I can't help but feel that a look at some email logs coming out of agni.lindenlab.com might reveal the problem. It seems to me as if certain forms of email address are being dropped. Either that, or someone, or something, is doing some filtering somewhere.

I don't have any filtering on my main email accounts (opted out), and I don't have any problems getting emails from other lindenlab.com sources. Just IMs.

What I don't know is how to get a Linden on board with looking at this.

Yak Wise added a comment - 25/Aug/08 08:50 AM
Confirming that I indeed also have no .com or .net but .nl

Freda Fredriksson added a comment - 25/Aug/08 12:25 PM
OMG....I cant believe it. Just changed my email to the googlemail.com and the off-IM came through )) I thank you so much Pale So even if the .de (I tried different ones now) dont work I am possible now to reveive the IMs....

Yak Wise added a comment - 26/Aug/08 04:26 AM - edited
Nice workaround, but I'm NOT prepared to change my email adress.

I'm a Premium Member and would like to see this issue finally solved...
How is it possible that no one is assigned to this case that has been dragging on?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT CAN WE DO TO GET A LINDEN ON THIS CASE???
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yak Wise added a comment - 28/Aug/08 06:11 PM
Since this problem started again, I have not received an 'IM to Email' (except from Groups) since the 23rd of July.
It is now the 29th of August. No Linden is assigned to this case, no one knows how to get a Linden on this case...This is bad !!!!
If any Linden EVER reads this..... pls get my IM to email working again !!!!!

Yak Wise added a comment - 29/Aug/08 07:54 AM
Asked via the Support Portal how to get a Linden on this case...

We have solved your issue

Priority Showstopper [ 1 ] Critical [ 2 ]

Hi Bridie! Nice catch. But what is really needed here is some Linden feedback.

I notice that this issue is shown as never having been triaged. Why is that?

Violet Faulds added a comment - 02/Sep/08 10:10 PM
Well, I opened the issue and it seemed to start working for awhile after Torley looked into it. However for a few weeks or more I am back at not getting IM's to email anymore. I don't know how to get anyone else to look at this issue anymore than you guys have. It's never been assigned a Linden, nor triaged. I know a bunch of people this is happening to, I'll see if I can't get more people to vote on it.

Yak Wise added a comment - 04/Sep/08 12:47 AM
I start receiving emails with messages from by my Visitor Detector.
It looks like something is happening...
It seems that someone is working on it...
Hopes are gettin up !!!

Pale Spectre added a comment - 04/Sep/08 12:26 PM
Indeed, the IMs are back BUT...

Notice how the subject format has reverted once again to saying: "Message from Second Life", and the first hop on the email headers has gone back to:

Received: from lindenlab.com (localhost [127.0.0.1])
by sim<xxxxx>.agni.lindenlab.com (Postfix)

So, I don't think anything has been fixed as such but it has been rolled back to the previously (working) version.

I have the intermittent issue :

2 days ago, I noticed that I stopped receiving IMs by email
I check my account on SL website
this function was deactivated, I don t know why
I reactivated it
Since then, I have been receiving by email only some of the IMs that were written to me

This is very embarrassing , as I can miss a lot of important information...

for example, that one today wasnt in my email inbox with the other ones :
[0:18] IM: xxx Beverly: (Saved Wed Jan 21 10:06:38 2009) xxx
[0:18] IM: xxx Beverly: (Saved Wed Jan 21 10:06:51 2009) xxx

koxinell lane added a comment - 23/Jan/09 02:52 PM
I tried with several email addresses , same result :

I am receiving randomly only 30 or 40% of my IM by email...

Please HELPPPP

Jeep Tenk added a comment - 24/Jan/09 08:56 AM
I have not received any IMs to my e-mail address since the day before yesterday (yesterday, depending on time zone) and it is MOST inconvenient. A lot of people having a business in SL are QUITE dependant on IMs to e-mail...

Violet Faulds added a comment - 24/Jan/09 10:24 AM
Yeah, it seems it's broken AGAIN. I'm back to not receiving any individual IM's to email. I still receive some Group Notices, but not individual ones. I was hoping the fix to the grid this week, as well as the rolling restart would fix it, but it seems that's not the case. Sadly, we can't get a Linden on this issue either.

Advent Braveheart added a comment - 26/Jan/09 09:09 PM
I have the same problem, some come through and some dont. Please get a Linden on this

mandy medusa added a comment - 30/Jan/09 03:03 AM
I spoke to Kaylee Linden on this on live chat just now. She confirmed it was an existing problem and she said she was going to escalate it to a engineer.

Sad to say my problems are the same as you mentioned. Starting from jan/20 no offline IM's go to my mail anymore. I changed mai addresses, but to no avail. And yes, if you have a business this is VERY inconvenient

agnetha vuckovic added a comment - 03/Feb/09 11:08 AM
I experienced the same issue, did some testing, and it seems that whether the emails for IMs arrive is dependent on what sim you are in when the IM is sent. I tested from some sims where emails consistently arrived with no problem, while in others they consistently did not arrive. So it would appear to be a sim related issue.

Also, on my own sim the issue had occured. After two restarts, the emails suddenly started arriving again.

Bones Outlander added a comment - 05/Feb/09 05:05 AM
It's not only Offline Ims not getting through.

I wrote an online tracker that emails me using llEmail and these emails are not getting through either.

My tracker is located in Region: Hidden Heaven (201728, 279040)

I am back again. Since 2 days I again do not receive IMs to email. It worked about 6 months on the googlemail-address and suddenly stopped without any reason. Its so annyoing and impossible to run a serious business with these issues. I closed my inworld-business by the end of last year and glad I did. No Linden really cares about such issues. What a shame. I saw many great people leave SL lately...

Bee Karillion added a comment - 06/Mar/09 04:59 PM
I have had an issue over the last 2 days with IM's not being forwarded to my email.
I have not changed any settings on s/l and have checked my preferences which are still set to forward IM's when I am offline.
The Im's are on screen when I log into s/l....just don't get relayed when I am offline

Yak Wise added a comment - 08/Mar/09 04:25 PM
After a long time of no trouble the old issue is back again...
I do receicve group-anouncements forwarded to my email, but not IM's created by SCRIPTED OBJECTS like my Visitor Detector.
When logging in I do see them on my screen, they just do not get forwarded to my email. This has been so since March 6th.
Oh lets hope that this bug is not going to take an eternity to solve like last time. Being aware who is on my land is vital to me...
It seems relevant to also note that my email extension is not ".com" but ".nl"

Yak Wise added a comment - 10/Mar/09 05:30 PM - edited

I also stopped receiving IM's to my email account. All IM's stopped and they stopped when I upgraded to the SL release 1.22.11 on March 6th. Before that I was receiving all emails.

MIne are coming again, but only with the .com email. never tried my .de again.

Yak Wise added a comment - 15/Mar/09 02:20 AM
Although we would not know it here, it turns out that LL is aware of the issue, the blog reads:

Some Offline & Object IMs not being delivered
We are aware of an issue where some IMs are not working properly, or at all. These are currently affecting both Offline IMs and Object IMs. We are continuing efforts to resolve this issue and will update this blog post when more information is available.

Chiva Vavoom added a comment - 15/Mar/09 06:11 AM
For what it's worth, it's got me too. I am receiving neither Object IMs nor Avatar IMs in my email. I have changed the address that they are directed to, but still they do not arrive. This is a VERY useful feature and I can't imagine running my business without it. I do not get to spend as much time in-world as I would like so it's a no-brainer that IM to Email is the first line in my knowing that someone needs attention and indeed in being able to respond to them

Yak Wise added a comment - 16/Mar/09 02:17 AM
Despite LL declaring the problem to be solved, it is not, at least not for me.
Just logged inworld and found again two IM's from a scripted object that were not forwarded to my email:
Visitor Detector 2.3: [07:14AM] ( Yak Wise's Pad) gero Anton 152 ft.
Visitor Detector 2.3: [09:48AM] ( Yak Wise's Pad) Alice Athens 60 ft.

Azul Wilder added a comment - 16/Mar/09 02:27 AM
Same happens to me.
LL declares this as RESOLVED, but IT IS NOT.
I am not getting any email forwarded from IMs sent from objects.
Same case as above with Yak.
Does RESOLVED mean that LL is not going to resolve it anymore?
They shoud the reopen the blog and explain something.

Bones Outlander added a comment - 16/Mar/09 04:02 AM - edited
After emails starting to work again for me for the last few weeks, approximately 8 hours ago emails stopped being received again.

This includes emails from IMs, emails sent from llEmail LSL statements in scripts and it also appears group annoncements at the moment too!

The email address I am using is my own personal address on my own server, not a yahoo, gmail or hotmail address.

I stopped receiving IMs to emails recently (exact date uncertain), but it was sometime around Mar 14th 2009. Although I typically have no trouble receiving emails at my personal or business email addresses, I have set up test objects that should either IM me when someone else touches it (and I'm offline) , or explicitly email me when I touch it, and both are failing.

I have not gotten any offline IMs since Mar 14th.

This is VERY bad... I´m loosing sales and traffic data. Not to mention all the capped IMs with customer IMs that was supposed to go to email.

This has to be fixed pronto.

I´m using SL viewer 1.22.11
Hotmail email account.

The emails do not end up in the hotmail spam filter.

Can it be that *@secondlife.com has been added to some international spam list that all the email companies use in their spam filters? It seems most of the people stopped recieving emails around the 14th.

Katerina Lytton added a comment - 16/Mar/09 12:51 PM
This sucks! I havent gotten any offline messages or even group notices since Mar 14th.

I use a yahoo mail account and the messages dont even make it to my spam folder.

This is unbelievable, I have the same problem with e-mail forwards not being dlivered since Friday (14.). I issued a support ticket and just got the message this is solved since Sunday, adn I shoudl ask my e-mail provider instead!
I wonder whether the Linden support looks into this website at all. I do not have yahoo or hotmail, but a paid e-maila ddress which is very reliable, and never had these problems so far.

googlemail.com seems to (still) receive the mails, but started to classify them as spam as few days ago and more and more get classified as spam

Linden server IP address are block. My reigon IP is:63.210.156.149:13002 and it is block at this web site
http://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/query/PBL260132
They tell that only the owner of the IP address could unblock it.

I too have not received a single offline IM or notice even to email since the 14th March. I have logged on to SL each day to find either my IMs have been capped (and therefore I'm missing some completely) and/or whatever IMs have been sent have not gone to email at all.

I also have scripted objects which are supposed to send me emails - and they have been failing as well.

At present, these are failing to TWO different emails. My IM's and notices are designated one email (gmail) and the scripted objects a completely different email (my ISP addy). BOTH are failing.

This is very frustrating to say the least.

I'm using Second Life 1.22.11

Having the same issue since the 14th. I have never had this problem before well over a year. My email account and settings have not changed...

Current SL Viewer (proper items are checked)
Comcast email account (mainstream and all proper items checked and correct, I even added allow spam at my comcast account) Still nothing...

As a side note this somehow seems to be affecting SL Exchange whom Linden just purchased. I am not getting the normal IM's from them either...

As with everyone else here I have a very real need to have these passed thru without being inworld...

If LL mail server is placed on a spam blacklist, how do you explain that many of us are partially receiving our IM to emails ? (I estimate my rate around 50% of received IMs)

Taimaru Hak added a comment - 16/Mar/09 02:20 PM
I also haven't received a single offline IM or notice since the 14th March.

I have 2 email accounts and I have just tested a script that emailed both accounts. One account got the email and the other one didn't. The one that didn't work is the one I had set up for offline IMs and notices.

I have switched to the other email account which did work, however, not everyone has the luxury to switch email accounts.

If it has turned out that Linden Labs has been blacklisted I think it should be up to Linden Labs to get themselves off the blacklists.

Liny Odell added a comment - 16/Mar/09 02:22 PM
LL has multiple email servers. If my guess is correct, each sim also has its own email server for things like the object-object email. So if one(or more) of the mail servers have become placed on a block list, the ones that are not yet on the list will still work (hoping they don't become placed onto one of those lists them selfs.)

koxinell lane added a comment - 16/Mar/09 02:28 PM
Thanks Liny.

Anyway the only way to push LL working on it is to get more votes on this issue. So keep bringing friends and alts to vote here ;o)

Ann Otoole added a comment - 16/Mar/09 02:33 PM
Up to yesterday I was getting offlines from Second Life. Today they have stopped so add godaddy's network to the list of ISP's that have blacklisted linden lab's system.

Looks like LL may have to ditch open source, lock the client down, and disable all outbound comms to prevent the spammers from using secondlife sims for spam operations.
That will kill a lot of functionality but unless LL deals with it in a rational manner I expect all ISPs to begin filtering Second Life out at the hubs which will effectively shutter the entire grid.

I guess the competition may have found a way to get rid of Second Life after all. I don't think they liked LL horning in on the meeting room space.

I have checked all of my estates, as well as a number of Mainland Sims that I own land on, and all are listed as being blacklisted by Spamhaus PBL (policy black list), or the CBL (composite blocking list) or both - these email blacklists are maintained throughout the world and update to other blacklists - while it seems to have started with the main email providers blocking (the ones that use these lists), more and more providers are picking up the blacklists now. An example of when one of my sims was added to the CBL is:

IP Address 216.82.20.178 is currently listed in the CBL.

It was detected at 2009-03-14 17:00 GMT (+/- 30 minutes), approximately 2 days, 5 hours, 29 minutes ago.

This is one of my estates:
You are at 230935.8, 252072.0, 40.4 in TakaraMono located at sim3189.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.20.178:12035)

Basically this means that any email service that uses these blacklists will not allow email from any of my estates or the mainland sims I checked (as well as most if not all other SL sims). This is unacceptable to residents and business owners in SL that depend on these email notifications.

LL needs to contact their own ISP and have all the address ranges for sims delisted on the black lists before this gets even worse as the blacklists are used by other blacklists etc etc.

Taimaru Hak added a comment - 16/Mar/09 03:13 PM - edited
I have looked up the IP address of the region I'm in (Minkartah) and found it blacklisted in both the Spamhaus list and the CBL (Composite Blocking List).

See here:- Spamhaus = http://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/query/PBL260125

CBL = http://cbl.abuseat.org/lookup.cgi?ip=8.10.144.172

What is interesting is the detection date and time which is 14th March 2009, the day these problems started.

"...@gmx.net" is also affected. No emails arriving (neither via "llEmail" nor the "offline-IM-to-Mail").

The mails are not in the spam-folder.
*.lindenlab.com and *.secondlife.com are on my whitelist and not on my (personal) blacklist.

I recognized this issue first on March 14th/15th.

Paulo Dielli added a comment - 16/Mar/09 03:45 PM
For me the issue also started a few days ago. This is very very bad, because I'm losing customer IMs. Changing e-mail address is NOT an option for me, because this e-mail is connected to all my SL activities in-world and off-world.

My e-mail is @live.nl

I got the same issue with gmx.de and a few other providers. When I called yesterday the live chat, they told me I should change my mailadress to gmail
I think LL should fix this issue asap, cause it is no solution to change the e-mail adress.

Since March 14th Im experiencing this problem with an email account from the provider 1&1, @gmx.de and @web.de.
The @t-online.de works for me.

Its really bad, my whole business is working with an email which doesnt receive any offline and object emails anymore. It worked fine for more than 2 years.

Some of my customers got this issue too!

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 16/Mar/09 04:42 PM
Well it's Odd because Spamhaus lists those IP addresses as being 'residential broadband', and therefore they shouldn't have mail servers. Obviously someone got their wires crossed, or someone fed Spamhaus some bad information. Either way, It looks like the only person who is going to be able to resolve this is Linden Labs.

Freda Fredriksson added a comment - 16/Mar/09 04:56 PM
wow, this is incredible! A gmail-address does not work neither properly. I changed half year ago with first having the prob, it worked great, but since some days there are only about 50% of the IMs coming in, the group messages and a scripted sensor are forwarded though.

This started for me last night. I received none of my emails, and since delivery gets capped on my notices after a certain point, I have missed things that I don't know I've missed. My email and personal domain are hosted on 1and1.com, not one of the big guys, but obviously this has pretty much affected every single ISP in the world by this point.

I too have been having this problem since 3/14/05
not only do IM to eMail fail to reach me but traffic monitors object email do not.
I have had the traffic bots email me every day since 10/07.. until 3/14/09 that is

so its not just IM to eMail but the lsl.secondlife.com domain isn't passing the email thru

I saw the traffic monitors SEND the email on 3/15/09.. but I never got it

I do NOT have them sent to Yahoo, gmail, hotmail or other free email. I have them sent to my net venture email account (my ISP)
I did try changing the traffic monitors to do use my Yahoo for one, gmail for another and hotmail for another.. none of them went thru - so I changed them back to my ISP mail account

I put in a ticket last nite and got a response back that it had been resolved and the problem was with my ISP or some thing on my end.. course that means that at least 4 ISPs had the problem after SL caused it initially and SL fixed it on their end.. but the bug caused the mail servers of others to be messed up .. go figure

SL is on the global spamhaus spam list.

Not working to gmail, but emails to a private server I use - MediaTemple - working.

This should be listed as a show-stopper - this is beyond critical. I was only informed of this a few hours ago, I intend to followup with concierge tomorrow and escalate.

http://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/query/PBL260125

Ref: PBL260125

8.10.144.0/24 is listed on the Policy Block List (PBL)

Outbound Email Policy of The Spamhaus Project for this IP range:

This IP range has been identified by Spamhaus as not meeting our policy for IPs which should deliver 'direct-to-mx' mail to PBL users.

Important: If you are using any normal email software such as Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, and you are being blocked by this Spamhaus PBL listing when you try to send email, the reason is simply that you need to turn on "SMTP Authentication" in your email software settings (Tools : Accounts : Properties : Outgoing Mail Server : check "My server requires authentication").
If you do not know how to do this, ask your Internet Service Provider for help with "SMTP Authentication".

LL need to talk to the blacklists, because of the missconfiguration on 3/14 of the smtp-server!!!!!

There was an issue affecting offline and object IM to email functionality, as seen in the Status Blog:
http://status.secondlifegrid.net/2009/03/15/post555/
If you are still experiencing problems, please contact your email provider, or try an alternative email address.
Also, there is an issue in the Issue Tracker (Jira) about this topic, if you wish to read and/or comment on this issue it can be found here:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2573.

I still have not received anything to email and would need a day off work to try and get through to my email provider! I will try changing my email later and see if that works.

Yes, this problem breaks the rental business, which relies on IMs from the rental boxes to get to customers to tell them when rent is due, and to get to landlords to tell them when boxes expire.

Um, thanks!

It's unacceptable to tell people with a Yahoo address or others in the list to "contact their providers". It's on Linden Lab's side to fix its spamming system.

Griefers are able to set up inworld objects to endlessly spam into mailboxes set to IM-email – and there don't seem to be sufficient systems in place to detect when that happens and to fix it on the LL side. I've been spammed at times by 5000 or 10000 or more PN griefer spam IMs, and couldn't even manage to log on to be able to disconnect the IM-email setting to stop it. This is a problem of LL in its response to griefers, not my problem to try to convince my e-mail provider to move agni to a safe address. In fact, they won't!

I already lost one email provider for my business that refused to make any agni address safe after having its servers deluged with thousands of spam griefer mails.

Brian Engel added a comment - 17/Mar/09 05:36 AM
I finally got a single "email" from a rental box this morning, first one in almost 4 days over 60 were sent. Still no IM's from tenants being passed out. The support ticket response, on this issue did find its way out of SL about 6 hours ago. Ticket support messages seem to arrive without problem and resident IM's and object IM/emails don't, with the noted exception. I could assume that my email provider is blocking everything from SL except support ticket responses and the occasional object email but I suspect they are not part of the problem or the solution.

Obvious Schism added a comment - 17/Mar/09 05:48 AM
I can confirm that offline IM's are still not being delivered to my hotmail.com account. Changing my email address is not an option as my other address stopped working with LL mailservers after they broke the RFC standards a few months ago.

People may like to see my comment in SVC-3716 which demonstrates that LL mailservers are incorrectly configured to respond to Sender Verification Callout. I of course realise that this is a different issue, but it may be additionally affecting some users here as well.

i tried Group-messages, IM and object, to me all works fine now.

it was because the mail-server of LL where at spamlists our email-provider uses for preventing spam.

i looked at the blacklists, and it seems the LL-server arent longer at blacklists, it may take some time for different providers/isp´s to reread the blacklists.

at gmx the mails where received.

Not working for me since the 14th.
Getting put on a 'blacklist' happens occasionally in the corporate world and something I have had to deal with a number of times in the past. It's a pain to resolve but not difficult.
Informing a blacklisted client that they should tell all their customers to contact their ISP is NOT acceptable. Just another reason why LL cannot be taken seriously in the corporate world.

I've had 2/3 instances on Mainland sims since Jan 2009, when my Hippo rental boxes were not notifying me via emails of Payments recieved for renewals or of overdue accounts. The latter being even more important to me in managing both my Malls and the residential homes.
With Linden help in Live chat we managed to solve the problem each time, by simply rebooting the sim and changing the HOST server.
It transpires the emails sent to my email provider is deemed to be spam as many ISP providers use the spamhaus XBL, which is like a centralized list of spammers that many ISPs will subscribe to. So your sim could be sitting on a HOST server that is on the list of icky-bad-spammers. If you could see how the email is presented to these Email servers, its quite easy to see why they are regarded as spam here are some of the folllowing email addresses from my Hippo rental boxes (Object IMs) which appear to use parcel ID in part of the email address..

0dc7c510-0a1c-15e4-265a-49d5378cbf8e@lsl.secondlife.com

93454e2e-ee07-cbf5-fe78-3e09d871d9fd@lsl.secondlife.com

Its little wonder why HOST servers are appearing on ISP blacklists!!! The last Live chat i had, i was advised either to change the email a/c on my Hippo rental boxes (100 boxes) or notify the ISP direct .....both are really a@sewipe solutions. It should fall on Linden Labs the game provider to come up with a viable long term solution. How many people use IM's notify or Object IM's on the grid?....probably 1000's!
By the day, more and more HOST servers will eventually find themselves on these spamming blacklists, to a point that changing to an alternative HOST will no longer be a quick fix solution!.

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 17/Mar/09 10:20 AM
@ Rene,
Actually those are the object keys of the item sending the emails. It actually has nothing to do with why these IPs are on the PBL, they are in fact on the banlist because they were classified as residential broadband dynamic IPs, meaning no mail servers should be running behind them. However this is naturally wrong. LL just needs to clear this problem up with Spamhaus and whoever else, and explain these IPs are not residential accounts. Although I guess, they are dynamic, when you think about it.

LL has been sending out emails with key addresses for as long as llEmail has existed, it's never been an issue before. It's the IPs in question in this instance.

andred darwin added a comment - 17/Mar/09 10:47 AM
Hi guys, i'm not sure if what i did fixed my problem at least or not... but the fact is that i run my business from one sim, and all emails from objects i receive comes from that sim, anyway... i went to those websites mentioned above (CBL and Spamhaus), and the IP of the server where my sim is hosted was listed... i just followed the steps to remove it.... a few hours after, i started receiving emails as usual.... and now the IP's are not listed anymore....

Its important to mention that i did had changed the email address as well... from @live.com to @lunamaredesigns.net, which is hosted by Yahoo, but that was done a day before and i was not receiving emails either....but now im getting on both...

So i guess, if you use one or more sims, you can remove the ip address from the CBL and Spamhous website for your servers (where your sim is hosted), you can get that information on the About screen of the viewer....

Could be just coincidence... but the fact is that its working fine for me now...

Ann Otoole added a comment - 17/Mar/09 10:55 AM
@arned - Did you go to the colo and verify no malware was present? Was it your host to remove the entry? Did you carefully read the lengthy instructions warning you not to remove addresses that might be relisted and then become difficult if not impossible to remove for repeated detections?

Linden Lab is the only people that should be delisting the hosts after they have made the changes necessary to prevent another detaction.

Very Keynes added a comment - 17/Mar/09 11:59 AM
Whilst requesting a reboot may give you a short term reprieve it is far from a solution and the poor user who get reallocated your old IP inherits your problem.
I am not sure if Gmail maintains their own spam/blacklist/blackhole database but I too lost all email from the 14th until i looked in the spam folder. Simply marking them all as not spam solved the problem, but I have no idea how long that will last and if it will even help others. LL must take ownership of this issue and fast. In the short term to get the email flowing, in the longer term to prevent a recusance.

Very early PDT on the morning of 2009-03-17 Linden Lab removed several netblocks from the spamhaus PBL, inclusion in which appeared to be the main cause of these issues. A look at our email infrastructure shortly before 1200 PDT 2009-03-17 seems to indicate that the issue is now resolved on the whole, though it may take throughout the day for mail systems across the internet to recognize the PBL updates.

What about the CBL:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-3969

Are you going through and resetting all the IP addresses there too? Or should everyone just start removing their region hosts themselves?
