Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-16297
Linden Lab Internal Branch: Branch_1-22-2-Server

 Description  « Hide
After the rolling restart on 6/5/08, I went to the property I've had for 4 months and clicked on a sofa that generates poseballs. The menu system worked fine, but I got this in return, in lieu of the poseballs:

[13:27] Can't rez object '~~Pink Ball' at { 31.7549, 101.693, 746.831 } on parcel 'Pirates Cove' in region HoV Gold because you are not allowed on the parcel.
[13:27] Can't rez object '~~Blue Ball' at { 31.7549, 101.693, 746.831 } on parcel 'Pirates Cove' in region HoV Gold because you are not allowed on the parcel.
[13:27] Can't rez object '~~Green Ball' at { 31.7549, 101.693, 746.831 } on parcel 'Pirates Cove' in region HoV Gold because you are not allowed on the parcel.

I can confirm this on two seperate regions that have been updated to Server 1.22.2. In Serpentata it only affected 1 of the 2 plots my rental group owns, in Scylla it has far affected both of them. As owner of the rental group there is a workaround available to me. Sell the land to myself then re-deed it, after that the error does not occur.

Mercia Mcmahon added a comment - 05/Jun/08 02:39 PM
This is critical, it could make a lot of work for owners of rental plots.

Dup of MISC-1250

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 05/Jun/08 09:13 PM
Actually MISC-1250 duplicates this one.

I did notice however that objects set to group on group owned land with no build work, it is objects like this one that are not set to group that seem to give this error. Since they are not set to group they cannot rez another object, I would think this would be the correct behavior but this issue seems to indicate that it did not work this way before. Don't know if this is the case for all the objects reporting to do this.

Wrong issue closed as duplicate.

This should be moved to SVC since it was caused by the server update to 1.22.2

Yukinoroh Kamachi added a comment - 06/Jun/08 02:05 AM
Harleen: that's why I had closed this one and marked it as a duplicate of the other one ^^;
I wonder if it's worth opening a new bug and mark this one as a duplicate of it?

Yukinoroh Kamachi added a comment - 06/Jun/08 03:03 AM
from the official blog :

Update 2008-06-05 06:18 PM : If land is set to group build only, you must be a member of the group with the group activated to rez objects on the land. If you do not have the group activated, you will get a misleading error message about not being allowed on the parcel.
We are investigating and will address in a future version.

Yukinoroh when working out which one is the duplicate check the times, this one is five hours older than MISC-1250. The note from the blog is incorrect. I was rezzing objects with the correct group activated. In fact the blog is not even correct in global SL terms as group members in rental groups often have Always Allow Create Objects set in their Role. As the owner of the group I of course have that power, as powers cannot be turned off for owners. Note also my above comment that in Serpentata one plot worked and one did not. I was rezzing rent boxes across the grid and that one in Serpentata is the only one where I did not have to use the workaround. The fact that the workaround works suggests that this might have something to do with a cache, as the error disappears when land is deeded after the server upgrade.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 06/Jun/08 06:41 AM - edited
Also in this case it is not an avatar rezzing an object with the correct group tag activated, it is an object trying to rez poseballs, the object itself is not set to the land group. There are actually two objects there that rez poseballs, one works because it is set to the land group.

I related this to WEB-566, that JIRA is watched by those that can move issues, eventually this will be moved to SVC.

Updated the affected version to 1.22.2 Server

Latif Khalifa added a comment - 06/Jun/08 08:41 PM
This should be marked showstopper! It breaks a lot of content. I got calls from many customers whose multi-pose furniture all of a sudden stopped working. Turns out furniture that rezzes poseballs is unable to function if its not set to the group the land belongs to.

So its not only the active group of the avatar, also the group of objects that rez other objects.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 06/Jun/08 08:51 PM
Seems to me that is the way it should be, an object not set to group should not be able to rez other objects when build is off except for group members. My memory could be failing me, but I thought it actually worked this way at one time. Possibly this was a fix and not a mistake, just the message is wrong.

Latif Khalifa added a comment - 06/Jun/08 08:59 PM
Perhaps, but there is a ton of content out there that all of a sudden stopped working. So far it has been so that if the owner of the object has the right to rez objects on the parcel, his or her objects could do the same. Now I can imagine this putting a strain on the database since the sim would have to lookup object owner's groups each time it attempts to rez something.

If this is the case, at the very least make a blog entry about it, explain it was done for stability reasons and instruct how to fix issues (ie. set the correct group on objects).

Can someone explain how this passed QA?

Escort DeFarge added a comment - 07/Jun/08 10:57 AM - edited
Harleen – This is not just a message issue. It is no longer possible to use group roles effectively on land deeded to group and constrains land owners incorrectly who have deeded land to group to take advantage of group roles.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 07/Jun/08 02:05 PM - edited
I disagree on this being a fix, Harleen. On group deeded land, we use a separate group for staff, so that we can have things set to share with group that all of us can modify. This totally flies in the face of that. What's even sillier is that as an owner, I can create new objects set to any group; I just can't rez them out of my inventory. So if I want to share something with my staff group, I have to change tag, rez it, set it to a new group, change tag back, or create a new one from scratch, whereas before I could just rez it.

This also breaks the "create objects' checkbox for role permissions. Before, you could use it to have a builders role so people could rez stuff with different group tags; now it's useless.

Mercia Mcmahon added a comment - 08/Jun/08 02:16 AM
I went back to investigate the one plot on which this did not occur and discovered that it was set to group rezzing, when I thought I had turned that off on all plots to just leave role rezzing. So maybe this is to do with role rezzing and my workaround works not because of any cache issue, but because the permissions are being reset during either the land purchase or the re-deeding.

Last night after writing an abuse report on a megaprim in Sandbox Island Extension, I tried to rez a plane and received this message just before I crashed:

[2008/06/07 19:05] Can't rez object '[Mercz]-Uriel-5/13/08' at { 130.23, 252.008, 27.7834 } on parcel 'Sandbox Cleans every 8 hours. SAVE WORK-NO WARNING ' in region Sandbox Island Extension because you are not allowed on the parcel.

I returned at 1909 and successfully rezzed the same plane. Maybe I was already crashing when I tried it the first time.

I had included a sea-life rezzer in a public (full permissions) area of the sim in which I'm renting a parcel; up until the rollout, it was working fine with no errors; now it keeps giving errors for /one/ of the creatures in the rezzer, but not the other! I had to go yank it because of the frequent error messages.

**Something not mentioned by Linden Labs thus far**

I was told by a friend that this was mentioned on the BLOG as being when you attempt to rez on group owned land without your appropriate group tag on, and that it was being looked at for resolution in a future release.

HOWEVER, I recently bought a parcel on a well known private estate and after taking ownership tried to rez a group of objects of which some were no copy (and thus the whole group no copy). The land was owned by me, but a group had not been set, and that field remained blank.

I was wearing a group tag for another group plot I had been working area.

The item DID NOT rez, and the same sort of error message came up.

The item could NOT be found in my lost and found, in my trash, nor in the folder where it was originally. The item is COMPLETELY MISSING from my inventory and has not returned thus far. I have checked all nearby sims, up and down, nothing seems to have ended up in another sim by mistake.

I have had the estate manager resell me the land again, and I tried to rez objects, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. After much thought, I set a group to the land, and wore the appropriate title, and have not had any problems thus far.

SO be WARNED. And LINDEN LABS, take a NOTE OF THIS as an extra issue not mentioned on the blog: If the land has no group set, and you wear the wrong tag, and try to rez NO COPY items, YOU WILL most likely LOSE THEM.

Now I have a long way ahead of me to rebuild the building, contents, all items, vendors, slexchange boxes, pictures, example products, signage etc and rebuy all no copy items that have all vanished. I'm not impressed.

I've fixed this internally. Hopefully it will pass QA tomorrow and get a green light for being included in the next deploy.

I'll make sure they test for lost no-copy objects – such a bug may still exist for rez modes that fail or whatever reason since the fixes I made wouldn't necessarily affect that problem.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 09/Jun/08 06:47 PM
Thanks Andrew for taking care of this, it's caused me quite some pain. Should this be marked as "fixed internally"? Or wait until it passes QA?

i too have this since 1.22.2.89099 on Angel Haven, Light Haven and Dark Haven

I have similar problems on our group land in Congrua and Tridens cannot rez anything from Inventory but can create and build, but definately cannot rez anything from Inventory, have to leave it open for anyone to build to rez anything, then but the build back on just for the g roup.

Andrew Linden added a comment - 10/Jun/08 08:01 AM
I'll mark this as "fix pending" when it passes QA.

oberon octagon added a comment - 11/Jun/08 06:04 AM
This is happning on ALA Arts InforIsland ... not only can I not rez or build but I am constantly being told my PNP Teleport system can't rez because it doesn't belong on this parcel. Thankfully, the teleporter system works and as the owner, I'm the only one being bugged by CONSTANT messages about "Can't rez object" ... Thanks for whatever you can do to fix this. We have events coming up and really need to be able to build.

Andrew Linden added a comment - 11/Jun/08 06:19 AM
I am marking this as "fix pending". It passed QA and was deployed as 1.22.3 to about 100 regions this morning. Unfortunately I don't have a list of the regions affected.

I think the plan is to let these 100 regions sit and we'll see if we get any reports of new problems that would block the rest of the deploy, which whill proceed with half the grid later today or early tomorrow morning, and then the other half of the grid the day after that. BTW, this is how the 1.22.2 deploy proceeded, and we knew about this group-land-rez problem before it was complete, however we could not roll back because there was an even more serious problem (memory leak when creating objects) in 1.22.1 that the 1.22.2 deploy was fixing.

I feel this issue may need to be looked into again, as several customers of mine are experiencing this problem. Whenever they are offline, their teleporters are failing to rez. Although I am unable to reproduce it myself, I have witnessed the behavior at a customer's site.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 02/Sep/08 01:32 PM
@Thadeous - that is a different issue, see SVC-560
