This is simply a 'catch-all' proposal for improved in-world privacy. There are a few implementations on the Jira already and I'd like to link to all of them. They each have their advantages/disadvantages so votes are spread out when really they're all voting for the same issue (or not voting at all because someone doesn't like any of the implementations suggested).
However, this is basically a combination of all proposals to say; we want better privacy!
We don't care what the end solution is, it would be nice to have one of the more flexible/useful proposals implemented, but if it's just not going to happen then something more basic is fine. But the issue is that we need SOMETHING.
Please vote for this proposal if you want privacy in any form, and leave a comment if you prefer a specific solution. Also feel free to link this to any proposals that are relevant but currently missing.
Since this gets a lot of rebutal in the forums, here are some of the valid reasons we want this:
1. - So we can build in peace or without someone seeing our latest products in development!
2. - So we can chat with nearby friends without having to use IMs. I can see them on the bloody screen, I should be able to just talk to them!
3. - So our homes remain OURS. I don't want people wandering around my house uninvited, whether I'm there or not is irrelevant
4. - So our property remains OURS! I put up my TV for me, not for anyone to wander in and watch, sitting on my chairs, messing with my interactive bookcases etc. etc.
5. - No spying! The whole age-verification thing is proof that we can't take privacy for granted. Yes the people involved may have deserved punishment for it, but the idea of a reporter who was snooping on those people is much more worrying, whether I'm actually doing anything wrong or not is irrelevant. It's like having someone come up to your window and staring in, except that in SL we can't see them do it!
6. - We've been bloody asking for it for years!
NOTE: This issue does not refer to anything pertaining to security (such as potential for sites to retrieve IP addresses, or anything related to real-world information security), such issues should be attached to the Security proposal (SVC-456) by Angel Fluffy.
Privacy is defined as meaning; prevention of access to areas that are currently accessible whether 'physically' by an avatar, or by abusing camera freedom. ie; anything that can currently be seen or accessed that users do not wish others to see or access.

Description
|
This is simply a 'catch-all' proposal for improved privacy.

This is the issue that links to all the privacy-related proposals on JIRA.
"Privacy" here means :
* Other residents should not be able to get our RL information (e.g. our names, IPs, etc) through SL.
* Other residents should not be able to spy on us through SL.
If you are in favor of privacy in SL, vote for this issue.
If you are in favor of the specific proposals this issue relates to, vote for them also! You may also want to leave a comment on their proposal page or this proposal page.
Bear in mind you need to log-in before you can vote for issues.
Note that this is NOT the place to discuss :
* How to secure your property against unwelcome use (e.g. uninvited guests on your land or in your house)
* How to secure your avatar against attacks (e.g. notecard spam or other such personally directed harassment)
For those types of issues, please see SVC-456, the security meta-issue.
The original reasons posted by Haravikk for security and privacy in SL include :
I put up my TV for me, not for anyone to wander in and watch, sitting on my chairs, messing with my interactive bookcases etc. etc.

It's like having someone come up to your window and staring in, except that in SL we can't see them do it!
6. - We've been bloody asking for it for years!
Note : this proposal was split by Angel Fluffy on July 23rd 2007 into privacy (this proposal) and security (SVC-456). The reasoning behind the split is outlined on SVC-456. The original unedited text of this meta-issue as written by Haravikk Mistral is saved as an attachment to this proposal.
