The problem has worsened with the last server update; even vehicle crossing between two new sims with very low frame time (i.e Elbert to Eyharts) results in a full bork where you fly across multiple sims and the vehilce comes off, etc. I linked this issue to SVC-472; addresses the same issue but it's age stale and Linden has yet to assign anybody even after 11 months! To quote a Torley Linden comment on that issue from 29 Aug 07, "We are currently working on creating comprehensive teleport and region crossing failure metrics, part of a bigger project to improve both teleports and region crossing reliability (as they are closely related). This will give us better insight into weak points so we can improve them." Where is this metric nearly a full year later and if you have it, why isn't it being used & how is it that server updates get put on the main grid without any obvious testing?
I wouldn't say this is being ignored by LL, it will just take a lot of work to correct. Once the new agent/region domain structure gets in place it should greatly reduce this problem.
I wish I could share your optimism Harleen. But from what I've seen, sim crossing problems have been an issue for years now, and they are getting worse rather than improving. Teleports are failing on a regular basis, inventory is being lost on a regular basis, group chat yet again is not working. To be totally honest, the system is a mess. The term "potential train wreck" comes to mind at this point.
It would be nice to see LL pull out of these problems, but from what I've personally seen over the last year... it's just getting worse. Eye candy like Windlight does not make for a stable platform. I love glow, but I truely think LL would be better served to spend all those thousands of man-hours shoring up the foundation. Harleen, It's nice to know that some semblance of architectural engineering is being undertaken by Linden, but what leads you to believe that this proposed new structure is going to actually solve this issue, and do so without creating a dozen new problems? Unless you can show me some documentation that addresses the region crossing problem within the framework of the AWG, than I have no reason to believe it will get fixed, directly or indirectly. The fact that Linden has ignored this problem is readily verified by SVC-472 - 330 votes, nearly a year old, empty promises of metrics, and no Linden assigned to it. Perhaps you could suggest that the Linden in charge of the AWG assign himself that task, and boldly state that the region crossing issue is a fait accompli once the new agent/region domain structure is in place.
I have a question... how was the title and text of my original post changed without my knowledge or permission? I certainly mentioned nothing about "metrics" in my original post. The original title was "Sim Crossing Issues"... period.
For someone to be able to change the title and content of this post is evidence this JIRA system is compromised. Yea - Everyone can update or resolve a jira issue. If you go through the changed history, you can see who changed the entry and what has been changed.
I'm not saying the the new design will solve this problem, but it seems to me that if you are crossing or teleporting to another region, and everything in your agent domain does not need to be handed off to the region that it would improve the situation. But the fact they are working towards this structure shows me they are not ignoring the situation. Zero Linden is in charge of this, it can be put on his office hour agenda to be discussed.
Eren, the JIRA is a collaborative database and I edited it to be more precise & pointed without changing the substance of the issue. With the exception of other people's comments like this one, the issue can be fully edited, closed or resolved by anybody else - its not a compromised system
Folks, for any post with my name to be able to be edited by another user is improper. To change the post title or substance of the original post makes it appear that I left that information... which is false. There was no tracking of who made such changes, nor differentiation between what was my post and what was the post of others. This leaves JIRA totally open to griefer tactics... frankly something that I'm amazed hasn't happened yet. I'd guess it's only a matter of time.
It would appear that JIRA, like everything else involved with Second Life, fails to follow standard protocol established over decades of computer use. This system stands compromised. It is tracked for anyone to see, just click on the Change History or All link to either side of the Comments link.

Eren, if you wish, submit a JIRA to change the JIRA and not allow editing of task information - I won't be voting for that one. Also, I've noticed the sim crossing in my region have improved since I made my comments- perhaps it was a temporary network issue. As such, I'll revert the change I made and follow this issue in SVC-472.
Mark, I believe that additions to a posted JIRA should be in the COMMENTS area or an addendum area, not in the original post. I'm sure most readers of the JIRA don't realize an original post can be altered by other users-- including griefers. Just my personal opinion, but I can think of more secure and professional ways to set up such a system.
The sim crossing issues still continue. For a while today in the early afternoon they seemed much lighter, but as of 2am this morning they were right back again. I agree with Harleen that it would be nice if LL designed a new method of tracking sim crossing data. While they're at it, maybe they can totally redesign the texture rezzing system as well. ; ) |
