Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-47016

 Description  « Hide
I believe this is the spike of traffic for the textures being sent from the server, but if the sim has any load on it (more than 5-10 people) there is a Significant performance hit and everyone freeze's for a few seconds before the sim catches back up again.

If applicable, can you please give example regions that particularly demonstrate this? I tried TPing into several regions with varied # of avatars... and I haven't noticed it so much as you have, but since a number of you have voted for it, more details are most appreciated. Such as, how high agent time spikes?

I believe this is a known issue. Perhapse speak to Zero Linden about the specifics.

In general this is most often seen on a sim with a large number of scripts and textures, when a new AV teleports in the sim will start to send textures to that AV. And that process will send cause the sim to use more memory on the server then what it is allocated, that will then go to virtual memory and you basically get thrashing which is seen as the Agent, Image and Script times jumping up into the thousands. This will go on for about a minute and then stabilize. Until another AV teleports in. This can also occur when the sim runs the backup process in the background.

The issue was discussed at Zero's office hours on April 12

No, I think he means when a newly registered user teleports inside. This makes sense actually - The simulator never encountered this avatar, and new "permanent files" are made on the sim's memory - for that new user. For example, I enter Leviathan every day, as i'm a Supervisor there. But, if Someone Somebody, a new user, enters it, the sim can spike to 30-40FPS. Because, like in Orientation Island when you enter a new avie into it, it takes some time to load the avatar. Same thing can occur with other islands/regions. (Although not as harsh as on OIs and HIs.)

I entered the other day into OneClevelandTG Island (weird name), and noticed the FPS jumped in the range of 30-40 for about 10-20 seconds.

It may not be as noticeable in a residential area as, say, shopping/club/casino/ type locations.

Shopping/club/casino (commercial) sims or locations usually have more scripts running - vendors, tip jars, game machines, etc. just to name a few - and that processing load PLUS the addition of several avatars really makes this behavior noticeable to me (and is still noticeable after a system upgrade, so I know it's not all on my end!)

Typical symptoms involve jerky movement ("claymation" movement) or total inability to move my avatar OR THE CAMERA. In busy areas, this also often means i can't type/chat either while this is going on - the whole client freezes.

CPU: AMD K7 (Unknown model) (1837 MHz)
Memory: 1024 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 7800 GS/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
OpenGL Version: 2.0.1
LLMozLib Version: 1.1.0 (Mozilla GRE:1.8.0.12_0000000000)

This may not be AS noticeable on higher-end systems, so people with more current hardware may not notice this as severely as those unable to keep up with the tech.

Recently I've noticed this when logging on to me home sim.
The fps / dilation will bottom out for a couple of minutes until my scripted items and attachments load back up. Then things get back to roughly normal.
I'm fairly sure further drops happen when other users TP or even region cross in to the same area. It's hard to track sometimes though with the mini map if that was an avatar moving fast or a new one appearing.

Annoyingly enough. Today (7th Sept) was the first day in a while that I haven't seen this happen when I log in!!!

Added related link since Teleporting into a sim starts the process where the sim polls the neighboring sims.

This is a problem still- I just was searching JIRA to figure out why it's happening on the sim I help manage. Bikkini Abyss has this happen every so often... I reboot the sim and it's gone for a couple days- and then it's back.... it certainly seems like it's a memory related issue.. Net time and Agent time just seems to spike through the roof- and then comes back down....
