Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-1788

 Description  « Hide
[2007-08-02] Torley Linden: I've retitled the summary because Phoenix Linden earlier corrected that: "Inventory is actually transactional – it's the world that is not." My apologies for not making that change sooner.

Note that Knowledge Base direct article links no longer work. For our support info or to file a ticket for your "specific instance of inventory loss", please go to http://secondlife.com/support

========-

Original info from Gigs Taggart

Inventory apparently does not use database transactions (or equivalent) to ensure completion or rollback. Many real inventory loss issues are caused by this. This bug is an umbrella bug to dupe all transactional inventory losses too.

If you have suffered a specific instance of inventory loss, please do not report it in Jira.

Other causes of apparent inventory loss can be a corrupted cache, viewer problem, or Returned Item Coalescing. These are not related to this issue.

[REMOVED DEAD LINKS - go to http://secondlife.com/support , log into the Knowledge Base and search for "Inventory". Also see: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Inventory_Loss )

If these fail, contact the item's creator for a replacement if it is a single item. If you have suffered a large loss, contact Linden Lab through the normal support channels. (Phone/Email).

Additional search keywords: inventory loss lost gone missing disappear item items clothing object objects possessions

Ignore MISC-24 duping on this bug, I screwed up and duped it the wrong way.

Lex Neva added a comment - 14/Apr/07 08:37 AM
I'm not sure I 100% agree with lumping all of the cases we had as separate issues into this one issue, but what's done is done.

The latest beta claims this:

  • Fixed a case where no-copy objects could be lost during rez

Can we get some more details on whether this really fixes one of our cases here, Lindens?

Driftwood Nomad added a comment - 18/Apr/07 08:15 AM
I would also like to know more details on the fix from the latest beta. I am experiencing a high volume of lost no-copy items from my business, and have to replace these items on a daily basis because my customers keep losing them. Quite frustrating.

Most say "I tried to rez, and got the blue 'Failed to rez' message, but now my item is gone from my inventory"

Khristen Lassard added a comment - 28/Apr/07 09:11 PM
I just had something go "Missing from the database" that was a worn attachment on the weekend of 21 Apr, 2007. None of the three JIRA links in the Description section above worked other than to ask the original creators to replace the lost items. Most have done so. I think this is still an issue and needs to be voted on.

Isa Amat added a comment - 29/Apr/07 11:23 AM
Same for me, All attachements i weared on thurday 26, are missing from database now...

One Wei added a comment - 29/Apr/07 10:14 PM
This is a HUGE problem. Every vendor I begged for a new copy of the "missing from database" item said they have had multiple requests for replacements due to the same problem. It seems to occur only with items attached to an avatar during teleports. Since inventory items are client side pointers to server database items, it should be possible to relink the pointers to a correctly corresponding database item (refill the database on the server side). Of course this would be labor intensive. That is why it is not an offered solution.

Better still, FIX THE PROBLEM, or give us a chance to make a backup of all our items. (mirror).

It is unacceptable to give a bogus solution or just ignore the customer. Even when the problem is difficult.

I filed a bug report AND sent an email to support AND left a telephone request on Thursday April 26th and have received NO direct response from Linden Labs.

Further more, it is admitted above that a "reliability issue" existed and a reliability patch was issued to correct it. This was related to purchases where Lindens were deducted, but the purchase item was not received.

I filed a complaint about such an issue a while back and was told that SL is not responsible for vendor/purchaser issues. I was directed to go back to the purchaser, even though I had a log file showing the transaction, but had not received the purchased item.

The vendor could not help me because they had never received the Lindens. SO SL deducted them but sis not complete the transaction. How is that the fault of the vendor or the purchaser. I lost 400 L with that incident. Never received any replacement, credit, or help.

Yes, it's a daily occurrence for me to have people complain about the Failed Rez Inventory loss. It's a nasty bug that needs to be fixed. I've stopped giving replacements in order to force people to complain to Linden Labs. I'm not covering for them anymore.

Matthew Dowd added a comment - 06/May/07 07:00 AM
Can someone - hopefully a Linden who knows how the database is implemented explain how the databases work - in particular what happens to items lost during rezzing or inventory transfers.

Let us take the case of a no-copy which vanished due to a rezz failure. As far as I can see, there are three possibiliies:

i) the object vanishes completely from the databases as if it has never existed (in which case we need a backup)

ii) the object gets located in world at some random location. If this is the case, I wonder if this is actually at global co-ordinates <0,0,0>. I did go searching for a sim at global <0,0,0> but there doesn't appear to be one. If the LL had a LL owned sim at grid <0,0,0> with the parcel at <0,0,0> set to autoreturn would out objects return to lost and found? It may be useful if we could request a report of the locations of all in world objects owned by us. This could be via the website, could involve some nominal L$ cost, could be scheduled to run at a quiet time (so may be e-mailed within a few days after the request)?

iii) the object remains in the database, but at "no location" - could a job be run daily or weekly to return these to the lost and found of the owner?

Matthew Dowd added a comment - 06/May/07 07:03 AM
Sorry, meant to add that the report of all in world objects owned by the user might be a feature limited to premium or island owners to avoid abuse?

Matthew Dowd added a comment - 06/May/07 07:09 AM
Mmmm, is anyone else concerned that this issue is

a) results in major loss to a large number of people
b) is the top of a list of concerns in a recent open letter from some high powered residents
c) is marked critical
d) is fourth on the list of viewer bugs by votes
e) is the cause of common complaint in the forums and blogs (and here from the number of duplicates that are added every day)

i.e. is clearly a major issue of concern and complaint

and yet is unassigned?

Rob Linden added a comment - 06/May/07 10:02 PM
We have many people working on short-term and long-term fixes for inventory loss. The problem is a combination of several different bugs in our existing architecture (which we're fixing the worst of) and improving the architecture so that inevitable hardware, software, and network failures will rarely result in permanent inventory loss.

So, there shouldn't be any concern that this wasn't assigned before today. Many people have been working on it.

If it is being worked on then why isn't the issue in progress?

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 13/May/07 04:10 PM
This has to be the single biggest issue in SL. Today I worked with a customer who experienced a version of this loss. She transferred a large number of animations from her personal inventory into a HUD. When she dragged a large number of animations at once, she got this message several times:

"Inventory creation on in-world object failed"

Most of the no copy animations, that she was trying to move, disappeared. They are not her inventory, they are not in her HUD. I helped her clear her cache, but they did not reappear. She has sent an email to support with most of the relavent details. Of course since she was moving a large number of animations, she cannot remember the names of all that were lost.

These problems absolutely ruin the experience of ordinary users. I watched her mood go from happy and giddy at trying out her new toy, to feeling sick to her stomach and despairing. All she wanted to do was exit Second Life. I don't blame her. These problems have been bad for at least 6 months and seem worse with recent updates.

One part of this issue seems to be slated to be resolved by today's 1.16 release: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/05/22/116-release-wednesday-may-23/

We should all do what we can to test this and report back.

Lee Ludd added a comment - 27/May/07 08:56 AM
I lost nocopy objects (attachments) yesterday, and lost one (an inworld object that I lost when I attempted to 'take' it) this morning. Last Wednesdays 'fix' wasn't.

Keiki Lemieux added a comment - 12/Jun/07 01:56 PM
I have had several reports from customers who have lost attachements while wearing them. Sometimes this happens after a crash, sometimes all they did was log out and log back in. In my discussions with them, I have seen one trend worth looking into:

If someone has dropped an attachment onto the ground, it seems better for them to "Take" it and wear it only after it is in their inventory. The sequence of steps that leads to a missing attachment often seems to include using the "Wear" option from the ground. There was an old bug that I reported pre-jira that was very reproducable which led me to think that attachments that are worn right from the ground are not always saved correctly to the inventory right away as they should be.

In reply to:

<<I watched her mood go from happy and giddy at trying out her new toy, to feeling sick to her stomach and despairing.>>

Yes, that's probably what someone observing mine would have seen too with each time this bug has happened to me. First was 2 poseballs I created with purchased scripts in them. Then, a $500L diving board that the creator ignored my notecard (complete with IM log with a help person, and support ticket #), and seemingly so did the support people. Then, an abranimations dance sphere, and just tonight, a brand new $2495L game I'd bought to take the sting out of my impending birthday. This is not enjoyable and is unacceptable to be constantly ripped off while many people along the line just shrug their shoulders, blame our machines and pass the buck.

Jesse Murdock added a comment - 02/Jul/07 07:39 AM
I second the clamors to fix this bug. Since the rollback Friday night I have been getting swamped by complaints from my customers regarding purchases not being delivered to them.... yes all the standard procedures were followed to rule out inventory cache problems, etc.

The occasional incident was a necessary toleration that was forgivable due to SL's exponential growth spurt this last half year. This is a different story though, concurrency is actually dwindling, and the problem is getting worse.

I am 99 percent sure that it is all related to the rollout of that server side update, Friday night, as the sims are performing terribly since that too. Please fix this bug, it is turning into a showstopper if I ever saw one!

Darien Caldwell added a comment - 05/Jul/07 07:56 PM
Ok, this just happened to me in my sim Zebulon. July 5th, 2007 at 7:51PM SL time. I rezzed an item called "In Perpetua - Prayer' and it left my inventory and never appeared in world. not even an error message, just gone.

Toneless Tomba added a comment - 16/Jul/07 08:34 PM
Lately I've been getting increased IMs a day about lost inventories. I've also seen personally several times within the last week several missing items from database that were notecards.

I think as a community we've been fairly patient with inventory loss. I mean this all started sometime around October & November if I remember correctly last year. Yes there were times it got better but currently I can't say it's better than when it started. I think we can understand there isn't a immediate fix all but we need to see improvement or at very least communication otherwise we will probably assume the worst.

My questions are:

What is Linden Lab's priority about inventory loss, do you have time lines?
What immediate fixes will be done to help inventory loss?
What near future implementations will help reliability?

Heather Goodliffe added a comment - 16/Jul/07 10:51 PM
Possibly related to Jesse's issue:

The past month or so, I've been seeing a lot of undelievered inventory. Initially, I thought perhaps since the update that added prompts for all inventory deliveries, some newbies were just accidently hitting "Decline" thinking it was spam, instead of "Accept" on stuff they bought.

Over the past few weeks however, I've triple checked vendors where people have had problems, and talked people though searching and clearing cache, reloging, etc. From what I've gathered, it seems to affect specific people more than others, one person went as far to go around to every vendor of mine he could find across many sims trying to buy different objects, when I spoke to him, he said he "Accepted" the item every time it just never showed up in his inventory. I have no way of knowing exactly what he was doing, but this was someone who had a long history of buying stuff from my vendors without any problems.

So, either this is a serious inventory delivery problem (I'd say roughly 10-20% are failing), or the dialogs are having an unintended consequence that is creating a lot more work for anyone who uses vendors.

I've unfortunately never been able to produce the problem myself, however at a recent event we saw something similar, where we droped in a simple-as-can-be give-object-on-touch script, which worked for me and a number of other people, but probably half the people were having problems. Noting, that once the event was over, at least one of the people having problems was able to recieve the item after touching the object with no problems.

My best guess is that this is an issue with specific asset servers, or that specific people on slow or high packet loss connections are being heavily affected. I'm also guessing that either way the addition of the "accept/decline" dialog has something to do with it, since that's basically when it started, and adding one more point of failure in the (transaction-less?) transaction didn't help. I myself set my preference to auto-accept, perhaps that's why I have a hard time reproducing any of these delivery problems.

Sadako Shikami added a comment - 30/Jul/07 11:21 PM
i hadn't had problems with loss on no-copy items, until the mandatory update, and then the first thing i tried to rez gave me an error message and disappeared entirely (i tried all of the usual fixes, nothing worked).

it's a $2500L item. so i contacted the creator ... they said due to the HIGH volume of similar reports tonight (Monday night) they are no longer issuing replacements or refunds!

I have lost a Thinc Printing Press and some plants. No resident should have this happen to them. We don't have L$ to flush down the toilet. Please either create a way to make backups of inventory, build a fail-safe way for us to find/locate lost items or fix the problem in some other form or fashion. It can be done, why has this been going on for as long as it has? Let's not beat around the bush on this one, it is unacceptable and needs immediate attention.

I just lost a fairly expensive HUD item through this bug. Item failed to rez in world (with the usual slightly worrying message) but stayed in inventory. Item could not then be re-attached to the HUD (attachment for that spot is pending message).
So. Set clear cache in preferences. Logged out. Logged back in. Item gone.
Obviously still an issue.
Not terribly happy about it (the art of the British understatement).

Aylissa Babii added a comment - 01/Aug/07 12:52 PM
This issue seems to be the mirror image of the ghost prim bug a while back.

Then, you could lose a non-copy object when clicking 'take' would result in the object staying in-world, becoming invisible and disappearing completely after a relog. Now, you can lose a non-copy object when rezzing results in the object giving a 'failure to rez' error, staying in your inventory (with no way to rez it again) and disappearing completely after a relog. Either way, people lose inventory.

It could be both issues are related.
I hope the solution to this problem, then, is related to the solution to the ghost prim issue.

I resolved VWR-1476 as a duplicate of this one and linked here. Please see my last comment there, part of it being:

========-
In the future, we also want to make failed inventory transfer messages more descriptive, so even if you lose something, that info may clearer help us pinpoint where things went wrong. (Internal ID for that is SL-50020.)
========-

@Aylissa: That was "Content Loss: Objects can be lost during a 'Take' action (derez)", internal project SL-37535 with no corresponding single Issue Tracker #, and we believe it to have been fixed awhile ago. To emphasize, that was a big fix, and I know it was mentioned in various comments before.

From: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/05/22/116-release-wednesday-may-23/

========-
A fix for a notorious inventory loss bug, "No-copy objects can be lost while taking them", also known as "derez loss". Now, if a "Take" of a no-copy object fails, a message will display indicating the failure and the object will remain in-world instead of disappearing. This is significant progress towards fixing related bugs, and we understand how urgent and crucial inventory loss issues are.
========-

Content loss continues to be a high-priority concern to us and I'll let our devs know of these new reports.

Brenda Archer added a comment - 02/Aug/07 11:33 AM
There's a large number of new comments going in the official forum from people who have lost inventory in the past few days. They are generally from people who tried to rezz something and so lost it.

What happened to me is typical of these comments. I lost two large tents trying to rezz them, and they were no copy. Tuesday I rezzed them and received an error message, and they did not reappear in inventory after rezz failed. I thought, maybe they will be here tomorrow... but I checked last night, and they did not reappear in either inventory or the place where I had tried to rezz them.

Sadako Shikami added a comment - 02/Aug/07 03:07 PM
Torley said: "Content loss continues to be a high-priority concern to us and I'll let our devs know of these new reports."

Can inventory loss work progress be reported on the blog please? over the past few days, I've heard at least two dozen people saying that "if we still had inventory issues, they'd report it on the blog, so it must be fixed." (paraphrased) I also assumed that at one point ... tried to open a box of jewelry ... poof.

====================EXAMPLES==================

Each time I log on, I experiment to see if rezzing no-copy items is working: I build a shape, make it no-copy and take it. About 30 seconds to 1 minute later, the item disappears. It should appear in "Objects" with the name I gave it ... but it is gone.

Each time I lose something, I use all of the workarounds and fixes known to help with inventory loss ... nothing is helping. Objects are not coalescing. They are not going into Lost & Found. Clearing cache and re-logging does not help. Items are GONE.

All the rest of my inventory problems are "Attempt to rez an object failed" - both on my body and on the ground; and "Object missing from database" when trying to wear an attachment, and object disappears from inventory within about a minute. Estimating loss at over $10,000L at this point. Have been wearing the exact same "outfit" for 3 days now, afraid to lose any more.

My building job has come to a halt, lost so many items, afraid to try any more.

I sell shapes, but they are inside boxes because I give out many items with each shape. These boxes are full permissions. For six days now ( since July 27) I log on to IMs (and receive many IMs while on) stating: that they are either losing the box when it rezzes (box doesn't rez in-world and is then missing from inventory, OR the items aren't copying, it stalls ... then when they "take" the box, it disappears from their inventory. I've actually TPd to my customers to help with this, since it might be workable through the usual inventory fixes. it is NOT fixable.

I give out replacement shapes, but one item at a time rather than in a box, since it seems there's no way to guarantee an object rezzing.

All of these problems are occuring on the mainland, on Class 5 server land, on islands, on Dreamland. Sim hopping does NOT help.

I hope giving examples helps the devs?

Toneless Tomba added a comment - 02/Aug/07 09:00 PM
The latest forum posts do say it's no copy objects that are having inventory loss problems. I have gotten a good amount of product replacements for copyable items too. They would accept the item then when they look for it, it's gone. But I've gotten 5x more requests on non copyable items.

Misha Ceawlin added a comment - 03/Aug/07 05:30 AM
@Torley
Aylissa's remarks are correct, see MISC-496 in which quite a number of these issues are reported.
Currently the problems arise during REZ not DEREZ as in the old (and AFAIK resolved) case.
The problem threatens the inworld economy to a hight extent in my estimation.

As Catherine mentioned in the comments this might be due to a transactional compromise.

Torley Linden added a comment - 03/Aug/07 10:12 AM
Aura Linden, who fixed the previous SL-37535 I mentioned, is investigating right now to see what might've changed recently. I've pointed her to MISC-496 too, thanks for mentioning it; please feel free to link related issues (the "Link this issue..." link on the left of any issue) so we can keep better track.

Re: inventory loss progress, YES, we hope to provide more info like that, and detailed post-mortems of what we found out. I know many of you found past info like http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/06/12/post-mortem-find-database-issues/ useful when experiencing frustrating situations, and I definitely think it's helpful to share more like that with you. I'll pass your request on to the right Lindens.

Torley Linden added a comment - 03/Aug/07 10:15 AM
Moved MISC-496 to SVC-503 because it's a service (server-side) problem.

karen palen added a comment - 08/Aug/07 04:39 PM
This appears to be related to some form of corruption of object sin inventory. I now have several prim skirts that were purchased as "no copy", "no transfer" and now have full perms!

I have also just returned two items which mysteriously got "no modify" ADDED - "Police leg irons" and "police handcuffs" made by Marine Kelley - htis became evident when I was unable to upgrade to the new version!

On inspection I am unable to spot any other changes, but I have 11,000 items in my inventory!

THese items were never "rezzed", but only "worn".

nika talaj added a comment - 09/Aug/07 07:54 PM
Derez loss seems to be on the rise now.

Judging by Resident Answers, there has been a rash of a particular variant of the inventory loss issue in the last few days. You "take" an item, nothing happens and it remains visible. After doing this a few times you relog, and when you return the item is gone. It never appears in inventory. Personally, I don't know whether it is ghosted and still in the prim count. I had this happen on Monday night at Obscure Sandbox. Of course, I checked Objects, Lost and Found, looked for coalescence etc.. The item was fewer than 30 prims, non of them larger than 10x10. In the same building session, however, I had successfully rezzed and taken many items. All items were full perms.

Related RA threads that easily come to mind:

Some posters are not particularly polite, apologies but what to do, people are frustrated.

Beezle Warburton added a comment - 10/Aug/07 01:34 AM
Yesterday (Aug 09) I was working on salvaging a HUD that had been permissions corrupted(script permissions carried over to the prims, making it no-mod and impossible to add anims to) by moving everything over to a new set of prims. I got it all in order, tested the buttons, it worked fine . . . until I tried to take it.

On take, it sat there, but the Name/Description/Creator/Owner were blank per the standard "you'll never see this again" object "take/wear" from inworld failure, and the "contents" tab was on perpetual "loading."

Out of curiosity, I logged in an alt on a second computer. The alt also saw the object with the missing general information, but could see the contents tab, yet do nothing with the object except move it around.

I then logged out the original character fiddling with the HUD, cleared cache, and logged back in and the object was gone to that character. No longer visible in inventory, nor in inventory anywhere. However it was still visible to my second character. So, for giggles, I tried wearing it. Well, I did the standard flying-around-without-ever-wearing (typical inside a skybox at 600m), so I figured I'd move it down to slightly above ground level. Knowing that my terrain is about 110m, I put 120m in the Z box to give me a bit of margin. Then rezzed a plain cube and send that down to 119m to have a clear indicator of where the HUD should have ended up.

I then fly down to ground level with the avatar that had been able to still see the HUD. The cube I send as a marker is there, but the HUD is nowhere to be found.

If it has any meaning, this happened in Areumdeuli.

Beezle Warburton added a comment - 10/Aug/07 01:49 AM
Addendum, the object is most likely a "ghost". I have 7 prims "selected or sat upon" on the land menu which happens to match the number of prims in the missing HUD.

nika talaj added a comment - 10/Aug/07 03:14 PM
By the way, the scenario above seems client-version-independent. I was using the .06 (pre-voice) client with Nicholaz. Some residents in the threads I reference were using the most recent client.

Beezle Warburton added a comment - 10/Aug/07 08:56 PM
"client-version-independent."

Yes. The character that lost the object was using the last non-voice version of the client. The character that confirmed the object's corruption was using the current (before today) voice version of the client.

Ishtara Rothschild added a comment - 11/Aug/07 02:52 AM
I can confirm the loss on derez. "Take" or "Take Copy" leaves ghost prims and the item never appears in the inventory.

This is inventory loss is completely unacceptable, Im so ticked off right about now, I attended a costume party tonight and change from my main avatar to another one when the party ended and i tried to find my saved avatar ( which I had many in different outfits and accessories) it was gone, and every single one of my SAVED combinations gone, just gone, also half of my folders are empty, and some items were irreplaceable, I feel like i was robbed. I for one dont have the lindens just to throw away, and now Im seriousl thinking I dont have the US dollars to throw away on a game that robs you either (exhale)

Torley Linden is kind enough to report::

Note that Knowledge Base direct article links no longer work.

In a way that is easy to miss. So, first a meta comment/question, then two on topic questions.

Meta: Permit me to inquire: if the links don't work any more, Torley, why not make that more evident to readers in a hurry, by appending that comment parenthetically NEAR the now-no-lorger-effective links, rather than hiding it in your body text where it will probably be passed over?

Questions:

1) Is there any way for normal human beings [sic; we're on SL, after all] to now efficiently access the below knowledgebase entries? I've tried all the search terms I can think of in the knowledge base.

"Please see these articles if you have lost inventory:
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=292
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=421
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=328 "

2) Is there any point in reading them, or are their contents now deprecated/irrelevant?

Torley Linden added a comment - 27/Aug/07 10:47 AM
@Raytheon: Please feel free to edit the text to make it more useful! I put my message at the top because that's among the first things someone will read, scrolling down.

(1) No, those KB links are DEAD. Sadly. If you log into http://secondlife.com/support and go into the Knowledge Base, search for "inventory" to find the new links. Frontier, Jeremy, and I are working on a linkable wiki article @ http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Inventory_Loss

(2) The content has moved – it still exists, but (agreeably and frustratably) can't be linked to directly.

I've had two different reports this week of people dropping a no copy item on the ground and the sim crashing shortly afterward. When the sim comes back up the item is missing from the ground.

I dont think its fixed. I rezzed a non-copy object on my own land yesterday, and instead of rezzing it just vanished from my inventory. I looked at the world in Wireframe mode, cleared my caches, marked all own objects and so on - but it definitely is gone. Also it is not returned after a day to my lost-and-found. So: another 200 L$ lost, making the total loss over the last few months to several thousands..

"If these fail, contact the item's creator for a replacement if it is a single item. If you have suffered a large loss, contact Linden Lab through the normal support channels. (Phone/Email). "

What constitues a large loss? And seriously this has been an issue ever since i Joined Secondlife. Back in December, there was a grid crash in which I lost my EZAD (EZ animator deluxe - Like a Zhao) which had about $100 USD (that's $100 USD not $L100) worth of anims in it. I contacted support with a full transaction history, and was given the run around, and eventually told to contact the sellers for replacements, some of whom did give me replacements, some of whom did not.

I eventually bought back $30 USD worth of anims I was unable to get replacements for. So basically I paid $130 USD for $100 USD worth of anims, and had to do the footwork for the replacements myself. Ever since, every time I rezz the thing to alter anything I hold my breath and cringe until it is safely back in my inv, sometimes waiting weeks to rezz it at all until I'm ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE the frikkin grid is stable enough for me to risk it.

That's $100 USD folks - about $L25000 I was never given satisfactory resolution on. So again I ask, what constitutes a "large loss", and exactly when is this issue going to be FIXED?

I have an idea. How about vendors stop selling just no copy/trans items, and start offering the option to purchase the same item as copy/no trans at the buyers choice? Unless I'm buying someone a gift I could give two Sh*ts if i can transfer something. Copying something against the possibility of an INV loss however is very important to me at this point. Or how about LL provides a backup INV that will provide you with replacements of items you had in your INV upon inspection that said item is no longer present in your INV and was not subject to an INV transaction to another ava nor is in world? For god's sake LL open an INV insurance company and charge a small fee for the service or something.

Looks like most of my inventory has gone missing now. I get the message "Unable to create requested object. Object is missing from database." Enormously frustrating and no help to be had, it seems. Takes most of the fun out of SL.

Found this particular bug report after tracking through half a dozen others which claim that the bug is fixed.

Both myself and a friend suffered from the same thing last night. Try to take an object (no copy) into inventory. Long Pause. Object disappears but does not reappear in inventory. Object remains as a 'ghost prim'. Restarting sim removes 'Ghost Prim' but does not return it to inventory. Sounds familiar I'm sure.

In both cases the asset server was being recalcitrant at the time (scripts refusing to open, object inventory taking forever to appear etc.).

Apparently this particular bug has been 'fixed' numerous times, just to be replaced with another which is almost, but not totally identical.

LL really need to stop messing around and actually FIX this bug instead of putting up smokescreens around it.

I joined SL because of a multi page spread done in a favorite business/computer magazine, that extolled the virtues of SL and it's phenomenal growth, as well as the business opportunities available in what was considered to be the future of the web.

Some future...I've spent weeks now, day after day reading websites that were complaining about SL's bandwidth hogging etc., but the worst was these JIRA pages. I feel more deeply disturbed as each day passes.
I feel really sorry for all of you who have spent so much time, energy and money.

Last night I had tears in my eyes when reading the attacks everyone was making on each other in frustration, from years of dedicated work and investment in SL seeming to have been in vain, with little hope of a complete solution in sight.

I finished the particular CSS page/issue and again tried to spend some time "inworld". This was the cherry on top...Lag, crashing constantly and constant rebooting.
Everyone else around me at Sanctuary Rock Night Club also crashing every few minutes...

I have just now finished reading the "Memory leak" issue, so I know that I should be posting there about my obviously trivial words above, yet I have to say "this" here:

1) As a "newbie", I have been amazed at the scale of the problems that "old timers" have had and are facing concerning the issues mentioned in the JIRA pages and the rapid growth in numbers of new members in the "game".

2) As someone with a considerable amount of spare RL cash to invest in various projects in a program such as this, I have been scared beyond belief about putting a single dime into it, other than, as proposed by many here, a membership fee which may help stem the tide a bit, concerning the daily flood of about 25000 new "free" members.

Should there be an improvement in the stability of the program due to finances made available by new "paying" members, businesses would not hesitate to invest.
A policy of allowing only a "Standard" membership instead of a "Premium" one of $9.95/month should be implemented as soon as possible.

Like the new TOS of last night, which was great for everyone in this issue above, it is as simple as doing.
It may just contribute towards the lowering of the levels of "undesireables" such as the avatars that harass, stalk, cage, or beat up other avatars.

3) In what is (excluding the very real problems faced by the "citizens" of SL) a great leap forward for the way the web works, with it evolving rapidly towards mainstream use of 3D websites, SL is leading the way. Many that are in SL now, will stay if treated as customers should be, with the familiar saying, which, judging by the vast ocean of goodwill, knowledge and experience of everyone's input I have read over the last days, shows plainly: "The customer is always right!"

Where is the excitement of being in SecondLife if anytime I want to change outfits, I get the dreaded "Object missing from database" message???

It's certainly not encouraging me to do much of anything except log in and chat, that's for sure.

I commented over on http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-553 but I'll summarize here: I'm estimating roughly 1/2 my inventory missing, most of them are prim-based objects. Mesh/'default" clothing / skin items seems to be ok so far. Anything I haven't worn in the last month.... flip a coin, it might be there, it might not be. Quite often it isn't.

I'll second the request for "what constitutes a large inventory loss" - it really needs to be clarified!

I thought the garbage collection routine was cancelled? 'cause it certainly isn't behaving like it!

Observation:
Folder X has <x number of items> in it. (sorry didn't realize I should have counted this at the time. its likely 128 or 256)
Create Folder Y
Move all the items visible in folder X to folder Y
Suddenly <x number of items> begin cascading into folder X
Create Folder Z
Move all the items visible in folder X to folder Y
Suddenly <x number of items> begin cascading into folder X
Repeat until items no longer reappear in folder X
Repeat process for all folders with a lot of items until no more missing inventory reappears.

It seems to me that there is a viewer limitation going on here.
The inventory in this case is not missing. It wasn't rezzed and vanished, wasn't inadvertently sent to GC, etc.
It simply was not visible in the viewer making it appear to be missing.

Perhaps the client developers could have a look at this observation and see if there is something that can be done.
As for me I will make more folders and try to better manage my inventory.

Just experienced inventory loss for i think the first time for me.

I cleaned my animations folder. Created lots of subfolders, moving, playing and deleting items. Shuffled around with about 200-300 items maybe. I also cleared my sounds folder earlier and in total i might have touched about 500 items in about 20-30 different folders.

When finished i had 9158 items in my inventory. I decided to copy my animations to my alt. My alt got the message to accept my inventory offer which i did. After that my alt saw the message 'Second Life: unable to transfer inventory' while my real account saw 'you alt has accepted your inventory offer'. However, it was not in the inventory of my alt. See screenshot 2 for this.

Also, when copying the animation to the contents of a box, i would get the message 'inventory creation of inworld object failed'. See screenshot 1.

At this time, i could not tranfer the animation "getdown (loop)", not to my alt and not in a prim. I could still play the animation. Also could copy the UUID which is visible in the log in screenshot 2.

After a clear cache and relog i was unable to find the specified animation. At this time i have 9124 items in inventory. Thats a loss of 34 items.

Screenshot 1: Copy animation to inventory of a box.

Screenshot 2: Failed transfer of item to alt.

I'm not sure why a problem of this severity hasn't been fixed over the 4 or so years Second Life has been around. One reason you don't see a lot of old avatars is they have simply 'rotted away' due to cumulative random inventory loss.

Obviously people reporting the problem doesn't help get it fixed. They've been doing that for, literally, years.

Here's hoping people voting to get the problem solved will get it fixed, but I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe Linden Labs has no idea how to solve the problem... So here's pseudocode for my proposed solution.

Record every operation a user performs that will have a permanent effect on a object (before someone claims this is too much data, or too hard, to record, I refer you to the detailed linden transfer log already maintained). This is basically building (including the user deleting the object), and placing attachments. Since most users don't build at all, the amount of data recorded should be quite small. Each time, BEFORE the inventory server is backed up (and if it's not being backed up on a regular schedule now, you should start), load a copy of the /last/ backup and "replay" the building/attachment-adjusting operations on them. Then compare to the current inventory. They should match. If they do /not/ match inventory corruption or loss occurred (i.e. objects were altered or deleted, but the user did not do it). If inventory corruption/loss occurred whoever is in charge of maintaining the inventory server's code should be alerted, and a copy of the damaged objects, along with their good versions, extracted for them to study to aid in debugging (it is important for them to be able to look for patterns in what was corrupted/lost). Further, any items that were corrupted or lost should be loaded from the last backup, have any building operations that have occurred since then applied to them, and then put back into the user's inventory or on the land where they were placed.

If you write code to do this, then you should get notification when inventory loss occurs (thus you will know when it is /really/ resolved, and when any changes you make damage the inventory server code), and the users won't really lose items (or rather, they will automatically get them back every so often).

Doing it this way also avoids needing to make most of your infrastructure work correctly. If the garbage collection is still unreliable, this will catch it, and undo the damage. Further, it will probably give you a very good indication of /when/ garbage collection goes wrong, since you will be able to see large numbers of items that were lost, and look for what they have in common, that differs from items that were not lost. This should make debugging easier.

To avoid unnecessary computation, the inventory of any user who has not logged in since the last time a backup was made would not need to be checked outside of making sure that it had not changed (i.e. no "log replay" operation needs to be carried out for these). Obviously if they have not logged in, they could not have done any building, and therefore their inventory should be exactly the same. We all know that only about 100,000 or so players really use Second Life in a month or so, given the concurrent users never goes much over 50,000, so that should be much, much less work than the total number of avatars. You could save a lot of time by only storing/comparing database changes, as well. I believe this is traditionally referred to as "delta dumps".

The only /honest/ reason I can see this might be difficult is the amount of data involved. Remember that you (Linden Labs) syphon off a part of the cash value of lindens each time they're purchased. This means basic account users /still/ pay you for any objects they purchased, thus they have the right to expect inventory protection. If the amount you are skimming off linden purchases and premium accounts and sim rentals is too small to cover it, increase the amount you take until you can afford this. There is no excuse for losing things people paid you for.

Finally, get rid of coalesced objects. They have no value except in occasionally tricking users into deleting their objects unintentionally. Please don't allow user interface sadists to design similar mal-features in the future. This is bad enough to be considered a 'inventory loss bug' even though it was intentionally written in.

There are still very serious memory leak issues with all Second Life clients. For me, a user with 1 Gig of memory, having Mozilla open with many tabs (multiple web sessions inside a single window), and/or being on Second Life in a sim with a certain number of people nearby, and high of objects and attachments present, will cause SL to crash for me... either the client screen simple disappears and I get the crash-report sending request dialog, or the SL client window goes completely white, and I have to kill the second life client process and start it over again. PLEASE SEE VWR-2997

I love running my shop, helping customers with problems they have questions, and adjuting things for them. A lot of my times however goes to customers complaining they bought items that never arrived.
I replace their objects because i think its only fair people get what they paid for (despite SL letting them down when it come to helping with inventory loss) but it is very very time consuming.

To give an expression of what sales go wrong:

to get some idea of how many times it goes wrong (i removed the customer names for privacy)

Ok, it's 23-Nov-07 and - WOW! - this is still open/unresolved. ((sigh))

Anyway ... Here's what I've been experiencing ...

All scripted attachments whose scripts are not explicitly "backed up" as 1st class inventory items are missing their source code.
This has been happening to me for over a year - yes, a year.

Sometimes - if you're really, really lucky - the system will "hiccup" and you'll magically (and briefly) get to the attachment's script source code. So that tells me the link between the attachment, its bytecode, and its source is NOT permanently broken.

Obviously the bytecode still exists as the attachments function normally. SO - if you won't/can't fix the "Script is missing from database" issue, then could you at least give us a bytecode dumper? That way we'd have SOME hope of rebuilding our source code.

actually, alot of my store inventory is also gone... what is up with this?

Cenji Neutra added a comment - 30/Nov/07 04:32 PM
This inventory loss is particularly problematic for scripted objects that use llGiveInventory(), because there is no way to know if the inventory was 'received' or not. Given that 99.9+% of object sales in SL are via scripted vendor devices, it means that a good portion (say about 10-40% in my estimation) of items are not being delivered to buyers (and that excludes failures due to the scripted devices and comms themselves).
Obviously, with scripted devices, we have the flexibility to retry failed cases - but not if they're undetectable.
The system we operate allows buyers to redeliver items to themselves if they're copyable, but for limited quantity or non-copyable items that isn't workable.

a) transfer of inventory by scripts need to be more reliable

b) we need a dataserver or other event feedback for when the user really has the item in their inventory

'a' will help the case of 'profile drop' giving, direct buying and scripted giving. 'b' will help us code around failures to improve reliability at a higher level.

Recently (about 1 month ago) a missing folder turned up in my Lost and Found folder.

Anyway, yesterday another folder disappeared from my inventory. It was a folder I called Accessories, under My Inventory. The folder had more than a dozen sub-folders. Everything is gone from this Accessories folder (several hundred items). That was my favorite folder!

Gigs wrote: "If you have suffered a specific instance of inventory loss, please do not report it in Jira." Thanks Gigs, now I know what not to do but not WHAT TO DO! (Basic members aren't given an option for inventory loss on the support portal.)

Added SVC-1149 which contains information that may lead to a "meta-solution" to all the RDBMS-related pains that dominate the SL experience.

PM Sands added a comment - 10/Feb/08 06:46 AM
This Jira page SVC-114 Meta-Issue: Inventory Loss: issues, fixes, development, reminds me of a war memorial where victims list the suffering of lost inventory.

On SL Exchange, a merchant has been offering www.SecondInventory.com, currently at about $50 US. That cure offered resonates poignant interest and distrusting chatter on the product's SL Exchange comment page. I suspect it will not be too much longer before other competitive developers offer similar outside solutions at a low monthly rate (or free).

I would prefer the sense of back up trust be provided by LL offered from the Second Life name brand. The current online db + an extra local drive back up on my own PC is the reassuring feature add most everyone would like.

For the LL engineers, please consider releasing (as an SL brand) the approved feature set that this outside Second-Inventory company is offering (I assume how this is best accomplished is the calculated decision of LL Engineering Development via perhaps acquisition, reverse engineering, or opening existing features). Also, if this project needs more internal LL department support, LL Engineering might mention to the SL sales/marketing department that such an added Local Drive Back Up feature could boost more Premium account revenue.

Thanks for the consideration, and good luck with it.

PM Sands

I just had a bunch of Objects disappear. No crashes, just walking around a sandbox as I played with some avi customizations, messing with clothes & some new items I purchased...suddenly noticed a bunch of old stuff that I'd had for weeks just suddenly all went away like magic.

I could give complete details, time, date, place, a few item names...but I doubt anyone cares (since I'm only a Basic account...even though I put real $ into the SL economy), or can do anything about it.

The items that went away I wasn't even using...they were just sitting in an Inventory folder lying dormant since I wasn't currently working with them.

Hold up all!
This here is a meta-issue on inventory loss.
A collection for all the items you see under "is duplicated by" and "relates to".
If you can find an issue up there that suits your particular problem, then please post your dilemma there. And if not, then please make a new JIRA entry and link it to this one. SVC-921 would seem to fit a lot of recent entires.

The meta issue itself is simply a place to draw together existing issues.

And if your issue is with non-delivery of an item. Then it's technically a delivery issue, not a loss of inventory issue! Don't worry. I grind my teeth as well with the "transaction timed out" errors, and the loss of L$ that sometimes occurs. But this particular JIRA entry isn't the best place to mention them.

Please! Keep it specific and beef up the existing JIRA entries that relate to your particular problems.

Two purchases through SLEX ( http://slexchange.com ) on 3/16/08 were not delivered. SLEX advised me to leave a comment here regarding this, although I have some doubts about the cause of this erronious transaction.

No, no one here can help you. This is absolutely not the place to ask for support with SLExchange. Read the email you got from them, and even pasted here.

I purchased many items on SL Exchange, which I enjoy as a resource. The problem with several of these items is that they never appearred in my inventory when I clicked on the blue box to receive them. When I went to look for them they are not there. Please help me receive these following items, as I already paid in full for them:

The Grinch avatar – from beyond bobbysocks

Cooking Pit and Spit boxed (the pit and spit were received but the menu items were not)

Bill teh Cat avatar

Voodoo doll avatar

Giant King Crab avatar

Human Torch avatar

Cookie Monster avatar

Serial Killer Cigarette avatar with smoke

Mickey Mouse avatar

Hermoine Granger avatar (missing half of its contents)

Jeans package (contains 4 pair) - from Tonk Tomcat

Indian Headdress – by Gruff Grut

Gibson Les Paul (based on) Indian Tribute

Miss Gadgets Fire Torch

Universal translator v. 7

native Moccasin C – from beyond bobbysocks

Full Metal Jacket English gestures with HUD

Apache special edit headdress

Handheld Shaman Drum – two feathers

Aztek gold flexi headdress boxed

Ovation double neck guitar

WereHouse: Kaetif of legend: Male Lion avatar

Please return these items to my inventory, as I did not ever receive them. Thanks so much!!!

This issue has outlived its usefulness. And people won't stop posting SLX delivery failures. So I'm closing it.

[edit] Whoops, had accidentally hid all comments. The problem with people reporting loss here seems to have passed, though.

If any Linden is still looking for an interesting case of inventory loss for debugging purposes, a guy on SL's forum is reporting sudden catastrophic inventory loss on one account, all folders but library are gone. He has another account which is fine. I looked for another open bug with this symptom, but didn't see one.

We are trying to get him to file a trouble ticket, but thought I'd mention it here as losing all the system folders is rather rare.

I've had the unenviable joy of repeatedly having to replace XCITE attachments - I suspect they get targeted for failure due to their multiple scripts and parts. The ONE time that LL could recover a missing XCITE item, it came back unlinked. One moment, they are attached - the next moment, nothing, not attached and not in Inventory. No fix has worked to date.

I recently had about L$7500 in art returned to me by parcel return. When I went looking for it, it is gone from Inventory.

These losses are KILLING ME. I cannot afford to repurchase so much, and without specifics, vendors are unable to help. Since purchase is typically months earlier, I now do not have UUID or other definitive information to help LL track the problem.

Logged in today and the inventory is back.

I do not report issues such as this until I have followed all the steps on the Wiki at least twice.

I also am missing several no-copy items from my inventory as well as a couple of no-copy items I rezzed at home that never showed up inworld. Any inforamation on retrival of these items is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance and the information posted

I lost multiple no copy dances. I was editing it, put the no copy dances in it, and then went to wear it, and it appeared on my butt. I detached it and wore it on my left eyeball, it seemed to have somehow LOST it's parent location and fell right under my My Inventory folder (not in Objects where it once was) as I could see in Recent Items. I then crashed. I know my stuff is out there, it just lost the link between me and it. I bet that's what happened to a lot of the missing inventory, it got orphaned.
