Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-8099
Linden Lab Internal Branch: Branch_1-18-6-Viewer

 Description  « Hide
REPRO FROM TORLEY LINDEN in Second Life viewer 1.18.5 (3) and Server 1.18.6.75511 (you can get this info from Help menu > About Second Life).
  • Go to Search > All tab (new Search).
  • Search for "fizzworks".
  • Click through "FizzWorks Caledon".
  • Click "Teleport".
  • Observe: You end up at Caledon (190, 190, 23), a landing point (check About Land > Options tab). There's no beacon to point you towards the intended destination, which is Caledon (137, 184, 23).
= Expected; There should be a red beacon to follow, or better UI to show you where you need to go.
    > Workaround: Use Search > Places tab (old Search), search for "FizzWorks Caledon", and teleport. You'll see a red beacon.

This is related to VWR-3736, "Add "Show on Map" button to Places" for new Search.

========-

Original summary: Inter-sim teleports do not provide a red beacon unless made directly from the main map, so sims without point to point TP are disadvantaged

Some sims (Caledon's older sims for example) do not allow point-to-point TP but require you to go to the nearest hub and then proceed from there. The original reason for retaining this (after it was dropped as the standard method) was no doubt to encourage visitors to explore shops and sights on their way to their destination.

The original search system would leave you at the nearest hub with a visible beacon at the destination location. Thus you could make your way towards the destination and explore on the way.

The new Search system does not do this, and in addition it does not provide an address or Landmark that one can plug into the Map and make ones own beacon. This means that you arrive at the Telehub and are then unable to proceed to your destination as you do not know where it is from there.

I am classifying this as a bug as it appears to be an oversight in coding in failing to provide for a known aspect of functionality.

I propose that either the provision of a beacon by default is reinstated, or alternatively an LM or SLURL is provided that can be used by the visitor to create their own beacon using the map, or alternatively a "show beacon" button is provided to do this job from the search screen.

I'm directly affected by this, as, prior to the change, I'd always run with the beacon on, and without access to the beacon, it's very easy to get lost in the older Caledon sims. Also, the lack of a physical address (in the case of parcels that are above or below 'standard' altitudes) plus the removal of the beacon make things difficult to get around in all sims, island-based or main continent.

I'd urge this be fixed promptly, if possible--preferably by reinstating the beacon, or at least reinstating the option, but also, that at least a physical address might still be included under search.

This is one reason why I'm finding myself using the old search system more and more often. Just having a "Show on Map" button would work (though it's a bit esoteric), you could then TP from the map window, be diverted to the hub but still have the beacon. Better to have both "Show on map" and the beacon lit up by default anyway.

I agree. Many sims don't allow site to site transporting, and the beacon is immensely helpful. Having the beacon on should be the default anytime your teleport doesn't take you directly to the coordinates you specified.

This is clearly a significant downgrade of service for sims that use telehubs. If you're going to enable telehub-only travel, then you have to provide some way to make it from the hub to your destination.

This is a serious issue for regions like Caledon without point to point. it BREAKS the regions and makes it impossible for the businesses there to be found by less than very determined or experienced players (who might think to use search places to locate the shop and then use the show on map to produce a beacon). This latter work around is simply that, a work around, and educating the mainstream of SL as to how to go about using that workaround would be a nearly impossible task and, quite frankly, when attempting to address the lowest common denominator, many will quite likely simply be too lazy to bother with the extra steps.

It is easy for the programmers who are not involved in the day to day life within SL to assume that everyone has joined the point to point bandwagon simply because it exists and was opted in as 'better' by the majority of the community. They need to remember that as long as the alternative to have point to point exists, that all additional coding should bear the concept in mind and plan for it accordingly. In other words, a beacon to the desired location is an absolute must in all situations where one is teleporting. One should not have to press an additional 'show on map' button, or right click one's landmark and go to 'about landmark' to even find a show on map button so that one has a beacon to follow. It must remain part of the mainstream search and teleport function, unless, of course, SL removes our CHOICE to have telehub set regions.

I have changed the title of this issue to reflect that it affects ALL sorts of teleporting, not just results from the new search, unless they come from the main map (clicking on a point on the main map, or selecting "show on map", works as before). This means:
  • clicking on landmarks from inventory
  • llMapDestination
  • SLURLs
  • other sorts of secondlife:// links
  • new search results

I have also changed the priority to Critical. This is a huge change and will not only severely affect sims with landing points, but in fact any area with landing points, such as malls or large group builds. Nobody will be able to find points within those parcels unless they are prepared to check their X, Y and Z co-ordinates against the ones in the landmark's name, or select "show on map" before teleporting, which of course they won't know to do if they are not au fait with the latest developments.

Using landmarks etc within the same sim seems to provide a direct TP - regardless of landing points!

Oh - apparently this does not affect client version 1.18.3. 1.18.5 is affected, as is the latest Windlight.

Barney Boomslang added a comment - 28/Dec/07 03:48 PM
The bug can be reproduced in variants at least back to 1.18.3(5) - if you use right-click "teleport to landmark" from your inventory, the beacon does not show with it. If you use double-click from inventory and then teleport, the beacon does show from 1.18.3. It doesn't show with many newer versions and ways to teleport, except with the map.

I find this to be a highly annoying bug. We need an idicator of where the spot is if they are using a telehub or a landing point.

I am seeing the effect with 1.18.6.2 RC.

I have been dealing with the effects of this for some little while now, although it did not occur to me then that it was actually a bug. Many times I have had to re-access my landmark or the map to activate my beacon when I had not yet memorised my way to a location. What Fraulein Trudeau said about 'less experienced' individuals would definitely hold true and add to overall frustration in-world. For places with a strong vertical component, like the levels of Steam SkyCity, this is even more significant.

Yes, I have a shop on a hub and another away from the hub in 2 Caledon sims....it DOES matter it seems as i do get occasional IMs from folks who can't find the second shop. This bug is impacting sales at that location.

Thank you Elrik for setting out this Jira bug. Thank you Miss Ordinal for blogging about it and bringing it to my attention.

WarKirby Magojiro added a comment - 29/Dec/07 12:23 PM
I agree. If you're not teleported directly to the destination, a beacon should be there to show where it is.

Finnella Flanagan added a comment - 31/Dec/07 10:23 AM
The posters who say that this bug impacts sales are quite correct. There have been several instances when I have simply given up searching for a shop in this situation. As I tend to be a determined shopper, when I give up, things are indeed difficult. Ms. Trudeau's comments are quite accurate. I have been inworld for over 7 months and understand the search and map functions well. If I have difficulty with this issue, it must have an extremely negative impact on less experienced players.

Gordon Wendt added a comment - 31/Dec/07 11:30 AM
I've been waiting to comment on this until I got a chance to do some testing and it also appears to be a major issue with the new app// interface as well since now you can send a direct teleport over a link and that does not give the red beacon to your location if you are redirected by a landing zone. This also appears to be an issue with both landmark based and the non landmark teleport links (think SLURL and related).

This should definitely be a very high fix priority.

Thanks for your reports and righteous complaints! I know what this problem is too.

For the benefit of those unfamiliar, I'll provide a repro above, import it for internal investigation, and alert our devs to it ASAP – whenever possible, please always provide a solid, step-by-step way to make a bug happen, even if it's obvious as day and night to you, so we can quickly understand what's going on.
