 Description  « Hide
Several regions have been experiencing a sort of disconnection from SL's communication infrastructure, they are hard, or impossible to enter or exit, depending on situation.
This issue started with the 1.14 release, and has continued to degrade.
One of the named regions, Deneb, has been restarting at least once a week to several times a day for several months, and I feel this may be related.

This has happened to Abbotts a few times in the last couple of weeks. Flying in or flying out is impossible. Sometimes regions aren't visible from the other side of the border, even though the regions are up and running.

It can cause problems for:

  • flying in/out
  • teleporting in/out
  • seeing neighbouring sims
  • viewing profiles
  • purchasing items from boxes (items never arrive in inventory)
  • possibly email, though I'm not certain about that one

My first observation was Abbotts on Thursday, time not available.
Deneb had rebooted Monday, Apr 9th at 7:40 AM and again at 8:06 AM, the 7:40 AM restart was followed by the region not re-appearing, the 8:06 AM restart had the region appearing as if it was present, appearing to be a flattened region with standard water height. Land in the region is terraformed and the water height is 0 meters, normally. When the second restart took place, the region's heightmap and objects did come back after anotehr 10 minutes, at this time the region was able to be entered from a neighboring region or directly logged into, however attempts to exit under this condition usually took multiple attempts or failed completely, usually resulting in avatar being disconnected from physics and floating in the last direction of travel until disconnected several minutes later.
IM messages sent out after the second restart where being received but the replies from other users would go straight to e-mail as if the region is not present.

I believe that the issue is that the region is loosing connection with the rest of the grid. Possibly due to it not properly getting the entire protocol definition on startup, also possibly due to some services not running properly on the region.
Part of the protocol appears to exist, because the region is talking with clients, however asset, and other server calls that the region would make directly to the backend of the system are failing.
These problems include:
  • inbound IMs, suggests the region didn't properly register a user in the region, outbound works fine.
  • Asset failure, suggests the region can't request asset information
  • Dataserver results, such as owner name, creator name, group name, suggesting inability to request
  • User is able to move and function, suggests region itself is working aside from backend requirements... though performance usually degrades due to the fact that the region is trying to communicate with the backend.

Thanks for all the details, Cubey and Ice. I'm going to ask dev expertise for what internal issue we've already got on this.

This sounds to me like a networking configuration problem on the host machine running that region. It would be super helpful to get the host name of a machine exhibiting this problem. Help > About Second Life... look for "sim1234.agni". If you can get this information, please IM Torley so we can see it live.

Thanks.

Marking as "resolved" pending more info (server address) from Ice.

Logged into Zeds Pitch this afternoon, and all adjoining sims are missing (ocean). Map shows no red zones, but also shows no green dots for people. This problem is still going on, folks.

Seems to be fine to me right now. Was able to fly in and out of the region, and got an incoming IM while I was there.

This is the same issues hitting Limbo and Cathedral for the last two weeks (since 8/23/2007).

You are at 226428.2, 277084.2, 102.0 in Cathedral located at sim17.agni.lindenlab.com (64.154.220.92:13006)

Problem occurred last night at 11:34 PM PDT. 09/04/2007

One sees the region vanish and can still fly into it. Limbo is to the south and when crossing into Cathedral to the north I wind up at "Lmbo 131,384,69".

It does not appear to affect all avatars the same as Talarus Luan looking at the same region sees it as normal and one can teleport into it.
