Yes, I support this motion whole-heartedly. We have created a group for our customers and have promised them that we will not spam them with announcements. Unfortunately some customers feel that this is a good way to get in touch with the owners and keep posting group chats, which annoy all our customers, and cause some to leave the group, so we lose business.
We would like the ability to set it up so that only officers of the group can use Group chat. This would be a highly desirable configurable attribute for a group. I definitely support this and would LOVE to see this feature implemented ASAP. I have 2300+ members in my store update group, and its a daily fight dealing with the spam.
It's tiresome feeling like you're dealing with a class of peschoolers each day slapping their hands for being bad and breaking the rules. Not only are we tired of dealing with the spam, but so are our customers. We have sent out notices upon notices asking people not to spam and requesting that our customers do not engage in the spam by attempting to make the spammers stop. It always turns into total chaos, and causes loyal customers to leave the group with all of the bickering going back and forth between the spammers and the customers telling the spammers they're breaking the rules. Lindens need to step things up and give us the option of having more control over the kids that they let into the adult grid. I posted a notice in my group asking members to come vote for this feature, I'd suggest you all post it in your groups too - so we can hopefully get some priority on this issue. Good hint, but can be superseeded by this (mine) http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-838
Sending my hugs to Ashley, I know what she is going through,
I have 3000+ group members, i made rules, sent notices a couple of time but there is always a handful of people who can't or don't want to read and asking for a tp to my store which makes usually the most important customers to leave the group. 1 Message makes 20 to 30 to leave and it is freaking me out! Why would LL not give the owner permissions / control over their groups? Having decent traffic and group members makes you attractive to spammers who steal in on my investments!!! There is no control over that and all i can do is ejecting an banning abusive behavior, it always causes discussion and makes everyone unhappy, banned griefers come with their alts and continue. For me this is a showstopper and i am sure anyone with a large group of members will agree! Why hasn't this been implemented yet?
I see workflow entries from Rob linden but no assignee. Yeah why wasn't it implemented?
This THE feature where we can't fight back, I am usually ejecting the same 10 spammers trice a week and the same griefer group daily, i am reporting them everytime and so do my members and still they can come back and take over control of the group chat! LL is doing too little with banning griefers and doing to little to get us an off switch! Can anyone assign this please please please - and can someone give us an ETA on that? I totally agree with all those posting prior to me on this issue! My partner & I own & maintain several groups where I've had to work hard to control spam & even rudeness of group members to one another. Those that join groups for legitimate reasons and follow rules do not appreciate being spammed constantly & that is entirely understandable. I've trained members to help with controlling spam & rudeness by reporting it directly to me when it occurs if I am not online. Even with this, I don't catch all of the offenders. I've encountered people ejected from our groups for behavior issues signing right back on as a group member in alt form & occasionally as the same av! I've worked hard to build up my business in SL & often have had to deal with hit & run spammers advertising their own products/ sales in my store group as well as several help groups that we own & control. They join the group... spam ads for their own businesses & immediately click out of the group IM & leave the group. This adversely affects the group members & I'm sure makes them wonder why they joined the group just to get spammed.
I'm a builder & pulling my virtual hair out at times because of the silly, off topic, or abusive spam & conversation that is carried on in some groups I'm in. I'd like to see the following changes made to groups: ----- Allow any group member to not only turn off group notices but also group IMs from the group as well. They can be very annoying when one is trying to work. ----- Make groups such that a person ejected from an open group can not return to the group without the owner or assigned officer overriding the ejection & manually letting that person back in ----- Fix the group controls so that the moment a group owner hits the button to eject a person from group that person is blocked from typing another word to group members without them having to close out the group IM for it to take effect. -----Allow group owners/assigned officers to mute a person posting to the group not only for oneself but to all group members and at any point... even in the middle of verbally offensive comments to the group ----- Allow group owners to set groups so that only people in assigned roles can IM to the group. This would allow owners to keep known spammers from continuing to spam without actually depriving them of being in the group & would need to be implemented on an individual basis. ----- When people join a group, they need to have the group charter complete with the group rules flash up on screen so that they have to agree to the rules posted to join. Group owners and their designees could do much to police the groups and make them much more pleasant for everyone if only they were only given the power to do so in the group controls. I Have voted and totally support this issue, I have a group of thousands of members , even after a screening process we do get abusers. Not only that it doesnt even seem viable to keep an unrestricted channel open to all clients/customers. Imagine what would happen if Walmart opened up their phone lines to all customers.. its a big nuisance, even though groups are great , there should be an option to globally mute an abuser or restrict chat priviledges for certain members on demand and/or feature to disable group chat whenever needed restricting only officers to chat in there.
I think the creator of the group should have rights to "select" who he or she wants to permit access to group chat. Notices are used to contact the group members of any news related to that group, but group chat on the other hand becomes a nuisance to everyone else. Leave chat where it belongs,in personal IM's or at least give the group owners rights to "select" the members they wish to permit access.
I agree wholeheartedly with all the above comments. I founded a group with now nearly 3100 members and hate the absence of any form of control over the Group Chat facility which is not an optional feature in groups. Notices theoretically can be turned off, but group chat seems to be a vehicle for the unthinking multitude to irritate the life out of the silent members who are trying to do their own thing. Inevitable consequence, discord and departing members. Please please LL give the founders control over role group chat permissions, and enable the members themselves to turn it off if they so desire. Freedom of speech is a fine thing, but nobody should be forced to listen.
Simply put HERE HERE add the ability to shut off group chat and not have it turn back on till you want it to and I will be a happy happy camper! Give the owners more control please...it is our groups in question here.
i would love to see this as well as an option to turn off all group invites incoming people are spamming with group invites far to much now please give us the tools to block these spams thanks
THIS IS A GOOD STARTING POINT TO SOLVE THE TERRIBLE SPAMMING PROBLEM IN SECOND LIFE. IT SHOULD BE GIVEN TOP PRIORITY AT LINDEN LABS, BECAUSE THE COMMUNITY IS BEING RUINED BY SPAMMERS. PEOPLE ARE LEAVING MY GROUP EVERY DAY BECAUSE OF THE SPAMMING. SPAMMERS SHOULD ALSO BE PUNISHED MORE SEVERELY. LET SPAMMERS KNOW THAT THEY ARE NOT WELCOME IN SECOND LIFE
Group Management needs the ability to MUTE people in the group... to stop them from sending spam to the whole group. I manage a large group, and when someone in the group sends spam, it annoys a lot of people. There is currently no way to control this, other than to eject a spammer from the group. But if the group is set to self join, that will not work. There needs to be an additional control to stop people from spamming groups. BY NOT RESOLVING THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY (IN THE NEXT RELEASE) LINDEN LABS IS ACTIVELY PROMOTING SPAMMING AND DESTROYING THE SECOND LIFE COMMUNITY IN THE PROCESS. (NOTE: I offer a $1,000 bonus to the Linden Labs employee who will take leadership and responsibility for this proposal and have it included in the next upgrade release of the viewer. Dated 1-July-2008 by Anthony Adams. Notify me in advance please) TonyEMS Heying - Alpine Executive Center We have over 7,000 group members and group chat can become a serious problem . with at least 1000 users logged on all the time group chat pops up and some can not close it out. Always creating a chain reaction of a bunch of hi, hi, hi, there who are you? whay am i getting this?. I am leaving this group because it is out of control . We need more control . Some can not even determine main chat form group chat and becoms a big down fall for groups. We have asked for so long for this type of controll. we would appreciate some action in this matter soon .
I have asked all my group members to vote on this issue we hope we can get 1000 votes on this.. Please send group notices to your groups asking them to vote as well Best regards Dilbert D The current problems with spamming of groups can be solved by the addition of group roles assigned to Owners, Officers and Guests.
This was suggested in October 2007, and the Lindens haven't moved a muscle yet. This isn't even rocket science it is a very basic and short code.
The Spamming is getting worse because people using their alts - spam and leave and go to the next group. What follows is 40 abuse reports for an alt, the alt gets banned and a new one will be created and the story begins again + 10 new spammers that have no respect for other peoples business. I can't count how many members i have lost over that, at one point there been 5000 now i have almost 4000. Those people with large group have obviously done something right and I don't see why LL would allow some low life to break into "office" and informs MY CUSTOMERS about his/her business! 1) My customers deserve protection 2) I deserve protection 3) In RL this would be illegal. Since any person can write whatever he/she wants you aren't safe anymore from intentional defamations. One person that I got suspended from SL for repetetive spam in my group came back with an alt and was spreading lies about me in my group and in FashCon group, well this alt got suspended too but first i had to the inconvenience of these allegations and since this happened on my premises in my group i must say the open chat is sicker than sick and it stinks. I am tired of reporting 5 people per day, I am sure the LL AR team is tired of receiving hundreds of messages, therefore i don't understand why LL is acting so absolutely unprofessional about it. post it in your groups and make the people vote here, or even better, spam it in the linden groups (j/K) It is SOOOO important we get this implemented ASAP. My group members as well as the majority of all other popular groups get harassed constantly by spammers! Please reply and let us know the status of this issue ty
Seeing how theres allot of feedback on this, i'm going to try to forward all the comments to a source that may be able to see if it can be implemented.
<quote>3) In RL this would be illegal</quote>
I actually did talk to my corporate lawyer regarding filing a lawsuite against this for several reasons, tarnished corporate image due to abusers for one, slander, false advertising and several others and counting; however the time and money wasted in doing that he suggested I was better of investing in my own web groups on a separately hosted web server. It handles over 10,000 members in my group hassle free. I invested thousands of dollars in getting that up and successfully running however I would still like to see this feature implemented and fixed for a primary reason. Its still needed to give build rights to group members on a group owned land, something that my web group cant do. |

Added suggestion:
Add an option to the main information page of a Residents group to "Disable Group Chat".
This feature should not only prevent the receiving of Group Chats, but also deny the sending of Group Chats.
Adding both the OP's idea and this one, allows for those who wish to receive Group Chats to receive them, for those wishing to not receive Group Chats but still receive Group Notices, and to allow the Group Owner full control over her/his Group Communications.
