 Description  « Hide
The Second Life Mentor group is going away is gone. Until now, its members have been the only Residents (apart from Linden Lab employees) to be granted access back to the Help Islands (except for Help Island Public and Help Island Public2), the places where new Residents will first land when they haven't come into SL via a Community Gateway or a Direct SLurl.

It has been mentioned that Help Islands are to be replaced by something different, but that won't be too soon and definitely not has not happened before the Second Life Mentor group would be was disbanded according to the current plans. It seems clear that Linden Lab doesn't have enough people available to staff the Help Islands 24/7 themselves, so newcomers would essentially be are now on their own. This in unfavorable, because, although they might have been designed to be, the Help Islands are far from self-explanatory to a lot of new Residents. That the only way to leave a Help Island is per landmark (on Help Islands, Teleport buttons on the Map and on Search results are around an enabled, but won't work) makes the issue worse.

I see the following options to remedy this. Each of them would probably suffice by itself but several could be combined to be more effective:

  • Keep the Second Life Mentor group around, with its current members, until the new NUE solution is delivered. (because the group has been disbanded, this option isn't easily implementable anymore)
    • This would allow have allowed the ones already used to Help Islands and to volunteering there to continue
    • The group would probably be have been unmaintained and no new members be added, but that wouldn't be have been a big difference to the last few months before and better than nothing
    • Would probably have been the easiest to implement amongst the proposed remedies.
  • Allow resident run groups access to Help Islands.
    • This could be all or some of the groups accepted into RHN, or chosen by a separate process
  • Abolish Help Islands and send new residents directly to the Mainland, so they can be helped there.
    • This might make Info Hubs and Welcome Areas even more interesting for griefers
  • Replace Help Islands by something more intuitive, before Second Life Mentors is taken away as soon as possible. Don't keep the current Help Islands around until the new replacement is ready.
    • The old Orientation Island (same design as Orientation Island public) comes to mind.
    • What happened with that Melting Dot experiment?
  • Allow everyone to access Help Islands
    • probably a bad idea, just mentioned for completeness

Any other ideas? Add them here or mention them in the comments!

I think the better ideas are "Keep the Second Life Mentor group around, with its current members, until the new NUE solution is delivered". Perhaps (in second place) "Replace Help Islands by something more intuitive... The old Orientation Island".

In any case, my vote for don't leave Help Islands without volunteers.

I honestly don't think LL cares anymore at this point but I'll vote for this since they should at least keep the current system in place until they have something actually in place and operational working and then they should eventually phase out the mentors and the current system.

Full disclosure: I am a Mentor until LL decides to throw me out, I'm going to make Lexie push the button to remove a dedicated volunteer from the system and urge every other mentor to do the same.

Edited description to reflect that disbanding of Second Life Mentor group has happened. (Actually already some time ago, now.)
